Installing and Setting Up SGPro and Utilities on a new Computer for Astrophotography
In today's video, I get a virgin fan-less computer with Windows 10 pre-installed on it, and download all the software I use for Astrophotography on it, set the software up and get it ready for compete automation.
It is a long video, but I hope it gives you everything you need to do the same.
Software I install includes the ASCOM platform, Sequence Generator Pro, Stellarium, Platesolve2, PHD2, and N.I.N.A.

2023 Astronomy Quiz
Просмотров 6211 месяцев назад
Cornwall Astronomy Society - Quiz Night Every year, Cornwall Astronomy Society has a quiz night - no prizes, just a bit of science fun. Fred Deakin has written the annual quiz for the members, and for 2023 it is being released for everyone to have a go. Sixty questions against the clock, and sixty answers for the questions are after the main quiz. Good Luck! Most deep space images are copyright...
Dr Paul A Daniels gives CAS a talk on the Megconstellation Threat
Просмотров 383 года назад
Dr Paul A. Daniels is President of the Federation of Astronomy Societies (FAS), and very kindly agreed to join the Cornwall Astronomy Society for a presentation, and boy were we in for a fascinating and engaging evening. As the subject was on The Megaconstellation Threat, all thoughts pointed to the horrendous Starlink satellites that Elon Musk is sending up in the hundreds and thousands, and s...
M109 Galaxy with "almost" Automated Astrophotography - 6th May 2021
Просмотров 743 года назад
If you give someone plans to automate something, and they just draw around the plans you've given them with a crayon and say they've built whatever to your plans... then this was close to how my attempt at having a full automated night of imaging went! I was sure the night was good enough for M104, the Sombrero Galaxy... Unfortunately, I had to live with second best. This video, without sound, ...
Virtual Café Sci - Automated Astrophotography: An Introduction - Fred Deakin
Просмотров 533 года назад
This was a short talk I did for the Virtual Café Sci on 5th May 2021, where I gave a short talk with outline on how I do my automated Astrophotography. Great group of science enthusiasts and a fun evening. I thoroughly recommend checking out their website: cornwallsciencecommunity.org/remote-cafe-sci/
Intermediate Processing of Nebula NGC7822

In this tutorial, I show how I process some of my nebula images using Pixinsight and Topaz Denoise. I use techniques for reducing the noise as I go along, while all the time being mindful that I want the stars to remain fairly untouched.
A short clip from when I was asked to do a documentary piece back in 2018

This was a fun day, talking about my astrophotography hobby in front of a load of cameras. I don't seem to have the whole footage, but did come up with this old clip.

Fred's Messier Images
Просмотров 253 года назад
There are many catalogues of things in the night sky, but none have captured the amateur astronomer more than the catalogue known as the Messier catalogue. Charles Messier, a French astronomer and comet hunter born in 1730, devised a list of object that he would not confuse with the comets he was hunting. Although Charles himself did not find all the objects, the 110 items listed were collated ...
Adding an Electronic Focuser to a Telescope
Просмотров 4364 года назад
In this video example, I give a couple of details of some of the electronic focus motors that are available on the market, give some tips on fitting them, with plus and minus points. I show you from start to finish how to fit a new USB focus motor to a simple refractor and test out how well it works. Focus Motors shown are: ZWO EAF, Primaluce Sesto Senso, and Pegasus Focuscube. 2020 08 29 Twin Rig Imaging Problems

There are times when everything seems to go wrong! On this occasion, I had two telescopes out on the mount and was controlling both of them with my Eagle Observatory computer. The bottom one was my FS-78 with a Starlight Xpress 814 Mono ccd, the top scope was a Sky-90 with a Canon 100D that I was testing out. Everything was going well until I tried to guide on a star, and that's when the frustr...
Cornwall Astronomy Society - What we've been up to lately!
Просмотров 4394 года назад
I decided to create this short video to show everyone what the Cornwall Astronomy Society have been up to since the start of the Covid-19 lockdown. As we had to suspend our meetings, we decided to keep in touch in other ways including using virtual meetings including Zoom. We have not been idle at all, and in fact have brought the society together in more ways than at first, we didn't think was...
2020 07 12 3rd Night with My APM152
Просмотров 164 года назад
This is the last of the series of three videos over three nights of my initial imaging runs using my new APM152. In this last sped-up video, there is very little work needed by me, and just a couple of extra tweaks for everything to work perfectly. A total of about ten hours to get the scope to this point, and the resulting image of M16 processed in the Hubble Palette was worth every minute of ...

Thank you! A quick question on bringing together LRGB channels if in one of the channel images are Meridian flipped. I have in my images the blue channel is Meridian flipped from Red and Green. Does this get corrected during Registration on DSS?

Hey, I just wanted to thank you for the great tutorial! I'm currently in an astrophotography class and this was a big help in helping me create my first color image! In class we took images of both the M13 and M51 Galaxies and now I have them in color thanks to you!

One of the best LRGB stacking in DSS and combining channels in Photoshop videos out there. Kudos Fred!!!

Great video, much appreciated. Just one question - if you do have flat files in DSS, do you need to check them individually by colour when you stack the light frames, like check only green flats when stacking green lights, blue flats when stacking blue lights, etc?

Hi Matt. Thank you for your comment. Yes, you really want to stack your colour frames separately. Stack all the Red together, then stack all the Green together and then stack all the Blue together. Then when you have the three separate files for those colours, you have to put them together as different colour channels in somewhere like Photoshop, Gimp or Pixinsight. Cheers, Fred

Thanks Fred, really good. I set my benchmark of expertise as those who always start with whether to check or uncheck the monochrome box in the DSS FITS tab before you stack. It was great to see were right onto this, many who given instructional tutorials on RUclips simply forget all about this crucial step. Monochrome images should not be stacked as colour files, you want to end up with Gray/Grey files. Great video, thanks again.

Hi Ray. Thank you for your comment. Apologies it has been such a long time replying but I simply missed this post. Yes, I have noticed a lot of people missing little bits of info in their videos, which is why I decided to start doing some of my own. Indeed, grey/grey images are not often the desired result. I'm glad you got something out of it. Cheers, Fred

Looks very good Fred, anyone would think we know what we are doing ;o) When you look back it is surprising how much we have done, when do you think NASA will want their shuttle back?

    • @freddeakin1079
      @freddeakin1079 4 года назад

I didn't even put anything about the debate or hero evenings, so actually we've done a lot more than shown. It is surprising when you look back what has been achieved. Not sure we know what we're doing, but we'll try and do it in style :) NASA haven't complained yet, they might not even realise it's missing - I really want Hubble next!
