Bamford Clough Recce 12 Dec 21

The newly-tarmac'ed Bamford Clough in the Peak District now has a good claim to being the steepest tarmac road in the UK. This old 80s steel MTB was formerly the test bed for an e-bike wheel kit, before I thought better of it and just bought a proper factory-built one (see other videos!). Why not bolt a couple of vintage wine crates onto it and create my own take on the French 'porteur' style delivery/cargo bike? Especi...

    See Sheldon Brown site on cog thickness and spacing for different speeds. The cog thickness between 8 and 9 and 10 speed is fractions of millimeter so no big deal; much more crucial is the correct distance between cogs to maintain shifting; this is achieved by using correct spacers between cogs. It's all explained on Sheldon Brown site's "Sheldon Brown's Bicycle Frame and Cassette Spacing Crib Sheet"

    This is great! So, is it also possible to take out some of the cogs from my old 6 speed threaded sprocket and replace them with some of the biggest cogs from an 11 speed threaded sprocket? Or can i simply reduce the 11 speed sprocket into 6 speed by taking out the few smaller cogs out instead?

    • @The1trueDave
      @The1trueDave 3 месяца назад

      I'm not sure what you mean by a 'threaded sprocket' - just the top cog that retains all the others or an actual screw-on freewheel? If it's the latter I don't think they've ever made these in more than a 7 or maybe 8-speed... I've never experimented with mixing such diverse components as 6- and 11-speed but I know some downhill mountain bikers make custom 7-speed cassettes out of 11sp cogs so maybe that's something to look at..?

    Only the smallest cog appears to have the texture that mates to the lockring. I'm trying to build 7 or 8 speeds for a custom 'DH' cassette that uses 11sp cog spacing, so do I have to start with that one even though I don't need it for my use? e.g. 12-16-20-24-28-32-36. Tricky one... what size top cog do you want? I don't know much about 11sp kit but big top cogs seem tricky to find just from a quick search. If it didn't have the milling for the lockring I guess it would still work if you put threadlock on the lockring and checked it regularly but you'd have to make that decision, it might be a bodge too far...

      That's not something I've really looked into tbh. I can't imagine a 250w motor (even if 500w peak) would give you that much free speed and if it did the battery wouldn't last long as it wouldn't be designed for that load. I'd say if you want to zip along at 25mph you should probably look elsewhere (or buy a road bike and put some training in!). As it is, straight out of the box, I'm a reasonably fit rider, my other half isn't and she's leaving me for dead on the climbs when she sticks it on full assist. It's good for off-road, it's not a speed machine...

    • @The1trueDave
      @The1trueDave 3 года назад

      I can only speak for the e-st500 as that's the only one we've tried, but just looking at the specs the differences are as follows: Battery: 380Wh on the 100, 420 on the 500. Tyres: 2.2" on the 100, 2.4" on the 500 Bars: 720mm on the 100, 760 on the 500 Fork: 100mm on the 100, 120 on the 500 That's for a price difference of £200. It's fairly marginal stuff and I'm sure you could have a great time on the 100 but the 500 just looks a bit more off-road-capable on paper. I have to say even the 420Wh battery doesn't give great range so I would think twice about settling for 380 if you are a heavier rider. Regarding the e-st900; significantly better spec but a big step up in outlay and again I've never personally ridden it so I can't tell you much more. Hope this helps!

      Hi, sorry for the delay in replying. I don't know the particulars of the frame geometry but in general, as far as I'm aware, women's-specific geometry assumes that women have proportionally longer legs and shorter bodies. The handlebars are also slightly narrower on this one (720mm vs 760 for the men's I think). So if you're fairly long in the leg and not fussed about mega-wide handlebars it might be for you. It's sized quite large as well if that's any guide - the size M is recommended for height 164-175cm (5'5" to 5'9") which, given this is a women's bike, seems quite big. I'm 6'0" and it doesn't feel cramped for me... UKscalemodeller Mine was only £40 so you never know. Anyway, I don't know how long ago you needed to know this registration that your camera didn't pick up, but this is a handy site: www.mycarcheck.com/ . Between having at least part of the number from the video and having some clues about the make and model of the car, some sort of 'jigsaw identification' should be possible. Say for example I want to know the reg of the car that passed me rather closely at 0:50 (I'm not actually bothered, it's just an example). Pausing it at around 0:50 I can see that the reg is *something like* DA09 FWY. I'm pretty sure that's a D but it might be a Q. Likewise the W could be an M or X, or perhaps the Y could be an X. So there are 12 different possibilities there (some of which might not even be registered), but I do know it's a black Vauxhall Corsa, which will help me narrow it down.Checking on MyCarCheck, DA09 FWY is actually a Ford Ka. QA09 FWY doesn't exist, which narrows our choice down to six. Changing the W for an M gives us DA09 FMY - and bingo, it comes up as a "Vauxhall Corsa Design 16v T-port (3 Door Hatchback)". For thoroughness, DA09 FXY is another Ford Ka, DA09 FWX is a Focus Estate and DA09 FXX is a Focus hatchback. But DA09 FMX is a Vauxhall Astra Design, so if you were considering legal proceedings you might want to get some good pictures of both Vauxhall models to be sure. Since this is only an example, I can't be arsed ;-)

    Gate springs are designed for tension not compression. With springs in series you divide the spring rate by 6, but then you have two legs so times by 2, so your effective rate is 1 kg/mm. However your springs are actually similar to those used as part of the stack inside older RST, Manitou and Rock Shox. I've used a 50/50 combo of spring and polyurethane rod in the past but it's a lot of cutting/drilling work and finding soft polyurethane rod is tough. As a lightweight guy, elastomer forks barely move under my weight so it's great to add some plush travel.

      Good point about the spring rates but the odd thing is that I know for certain the overall spring rate is a damn sight more than 1kg/mm, otherwise it would bottom out as soon as I sat on it (the total travel is only 50mm)! So something doesn't add up somewhere. That leaves the individual spring rates to be called into question, but these are actually stated on the manufacturer's website (www.ashfield-springs.com/compression-springs-online.php - Type S.307). However, without pulling the fork apart I can't measure them. Gate springs differ. The one I used was designed to mount vertically, wrapping round the post in such a way as to be compressed when the gate opened; its resistance to this compression then tended to close the gate. Doesn't matter anyway, cos it didn't work!

      The1trueDave I have got a degree in engineering ;-) That's the theoretical rate based on their spec and your configuration but in reality the forks have stiction, damping, springs don't have a linear response and most of your weight is on the rear wheel when riding. The cheap eBay springs I bought (similar spec) also became shorter and stiffer once I had bottomed them out. TBH fitting and experimenting with alternatives for my early 90s Manitou's was so much effort, next time I think I'll just find some cheap used forks for sale locally and pull them apart for springs and elastomers rather than try to make my own.

    should show the surclip removal too, but otherwise a good guide

    Thinking of doing this myself. How was the ride after the swap, better/worse. Did the spring rate allow you to get full travel.

    ...characteristic which steel springs lack, so this may need to be compensated for. I did this by experimenting with the oil damper and eventually needed it on maximum. I may try the heavier oil myself so that I am not on maximum damping but that bike is in bits atm for a frame respray... hope this helps anyway...

    Hi, Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you - my desktop PC has been in bits and my phone isn't smart enough for RUclips :-/ Anyway, I wasn't sure what you meant by 'stable' but I'm guessing it might be to do with damping... are your forks bouncing around too much without settling down? For the record I am 78kg, so not too different from you. Does your fork have an oil damper in one leg? If so perhaps some heavier oil might increase the damping. Elastomers have an inherent damping...

    Hello Dave. I have the same fork. I tried springs with 30 N/mm but it seem the fork is not stable enough. My weight is 85KG and the Bike is about 12KG. I Wonder if I misunderstood anything. Many thanks in advance for your reply. cheers, Stefan
