    I love the choices to color coordinate the stomacher and petticoat with the gown but to leave them plain. It really lets the viewer take in the gown as it would have been worn without distracting from it or inserting the “editor’s voice” by guessing what those things would have looked like.

    Beautiful blade. The seax is my favorite profile for a knife. I make knives and I have like maybe 10 knives for myself and 4-5 of them are seax profile, the rest are just plain hunting/utility knives.

    I'm always a bit envious of you Brits, with so many thousands of years of history under your feet. Here, the land has been home to people for a very long time, but these folks had few permanent settlements and left few artifacts for us to find. There was a great city just east of me, across the Mississippi river in near Cahokia, Illinois--famous for its great mounds--that you may have heard of. But I can't go out in MY garden with the likelihood of finding Roman pottery or stone-age tools. Love hearing about all your finds!

    Fascinating! The one in the frame reminds me of an article I saw the other day on the National Geographic site--something like "3-D scan reveals largest cave art in North America" was the title, I think. Similar cross-hatching and curving lines. Probably not the same at all--that one was pretty definitely a ritual sort of thing. Thanks so much for sharing this! Always enjoy your stuff, James!

    4 comments and two of them are by creepy white supremacists who think they are "vikings". The Seax was found all over Europe and in Britain prior to the Vikings showing up. They came in a variety of sizes and many were fighting weapons.

  • @danielleriley2796
    @danielleriley2796 2 года назад

    Draw a seax in a shield wall? Seems unlikely since the shield is held in the left hand and the Vikings had their seaxs in a horizontal sheath on the belt with the handle on the left for a left handed draw. Typlically as a standard but individuals are called that because they are individual and so results may vary against the normal. Most info I’ve discovered has the Viking seax as a camp tool or knife and not a battle weapon unless it’s a last resort then a pointy stick will do.

    • @zoiders
      @zoiders 2 года назад

      Does it state anywhere that this is purely a Viking weapon? its also complete bollocks that they were only used left handed. The Britons made blades of this description of varying sizes as did Saxons who settled in Britain after the Roman exodus. The pattern welding also indicates British manufacture, the Vikings being somewhat behind the late Romano Britons and Anglo Saxons in forging techniques. The Saxons just like the Britons retained many Roman practices and two blades in combat was one of them.

    • @danielleriley2796
      @danielleriley2796 2 года назад

      @@zoiders the Vikings used the twisted pattern welding for the centre core of swords and were known for their elaborate swords. Of course not all and not even most were pattern welded due to skill and cost. Also swords were a very premium weapon. But Vikings were left handed draw on their seax as standard and it wasn’t used as a battlefield weapon as a standard, but push comes to shove and you would use anything.

    • @zoiders
      @zoiders 2 года назад

      @@danielleriley2796 Vikings were left handed? 🤣 oh good lord I have heard some whoppers from the Yanks now 😂

    • @danielleriley2796
      @danielleriley2796 2 года назад

      @@zoiders are you a fool? In a battle your shield is in your left hand and if that’s lost then you need something in your left hand to fend off attacks that get past your axe or sword. So unless your wanting to cross draw a knife then left hand draw is the thing. Remember the Vikings had the knife across the body, Para Elle to the ground as well.

    Tremendous! That square glass jug looks amazing. There appeared to be a lot of abrasion on the Samian jug, suggesting that it must have been well used and possibly not "best," so making it a candidate for internment?

      @jamessainsbury6985 2 года назад
