Powder Coating Engraving on a Laser
Game Changer for laser engravers who love using color!
This method was introduced to us by another youtuber who tried it out first. We ordered some powders from Prismatic Powders and after many trials and errors have tweaked everything just right.
I hope this video is informative and helpful and I hope that you can use this method in your laser business. It has saved us so much time and at craft shows we have our laser with us. The customers love watching the colorful process of seeing their items come to life.
Prismatic Powders is where we ordered our powders however, they don't have a sample bag of several colors. We couldn't find that anywhere really so we created our own sample bags to...

100 wats! wow thats a prety big laser u have there! how can i found that kind of powder paint?
Thanks I wasn't sure if this would work with metallic powdercoat.
Mask your product first. Makes cleanup super easy as opposed to sanding 😊
What brand is that powder coat paint
Why not just put powder coat in the engraving and the melt it with a heat gun? Works great
You can also try just using a heat gun on the lowest setting and you can avoid the wait times. You will need a hair of sanding if you left some loose powder outside of your design.
There's NO WAY I'm disabling the air-assist on my machine. It's there FOR A REASON. I'll stick with the heat-gun approach.
I discovered this a few months back. After experimenting with many colors I just gave up on white. The yellow too. No matter what focal length. I use. Could be the powder I got. Your white looks chunky like mine does. Not sure how I haven’t seen your video yet. Lol. I’ve been having a blast with colors last while. It really is a game changer.
I have tried for hours as soon as i sand or blow off the board sections of powder coat falls off. Im trying 300 mm/s 13.5% 400 lpi 80 watts
Thanks! will try this
Would yhis work on metal?
Do you turn the air assist off?
Hi everyone, there is a much easier way to do this. Just remove as much as you can and use a heat gun on low, or the broiler or a toaster oven. No worrying about power or alignment. Then just lightly sand when done.
Don't forget the 100's you pay for the powder
@@macswanton9622 That is the trick. Finding it in less that 1 lb. size. That would last 50 years.
@@macswanton9622 100s? You can get a pound of a color for like $15. Last you for the rest of your life
What's the difference in powder paint and mica powder ??
Do with acrylic pls
Where can I buy the powder? All colours.
where do you get the powder from,, i would love samples... tia
Does this work with a diode laser?
So... I have a k40, and I've been trying to experiment on a few things and was tryingtotune in the meltingpoint. Are the powder settings fast and low wattage, slow and high wattage or...? I'm using k40 whisperer and speed and percent don't translate from machine to machine
Good morning I have watched your video about 3 to 4 times trying to catch which type of powder coat you are using. I see epoxy, and acrylic... Which one works the best and which do you recommend?
Does this work with glass engraved items
Great video, this will help me a lot
Bjr très bonne vidéo, vous utilisez quelle marque pour la couleur ? Merci
Hi, I am using a 5.5W laser (Sculpfun) at the following settings: Speed: 2000mm/min and Power: 60% but on the second pass (burning the powdered ink), all the powder disappears with the laser. Could it be that the laser power is too high? Thanks
What a great video - Thanks for spending the time to put it together. Really appreciated the additional color mixing bonus tip. We also have the 100W Thunder. We really like it.
Thank you! Happy layering!
have you tried adhering a thin layer of masking tape over your pieces before you use the laser? that'd prevent the powder getting into cracks in the work piece
We haven’t found need for it. Most of our stuff is sealed ahead of time. If using raw wood, it’s a great idea.
You use a 100w laser. Do you think this would work with an Xtool 20w laser?
I’m not sure as it needs to get to a certain heat to cure properly.
Generally, you can’t mix powder coat colors. It isn’t like regular liquid paint. Sometimes it will work, but sometimes they won’t mix and you get a blotchy result, even if it’s from the same manufacturer, and they same type of powder (polyester, acrylic, epoxy, etc.).
Hi... I am thinking to start an engraving business... can suggest to me a good laser engraving and cutting machine... I need a premium quality...
We use thunder. Our 100 watt was around $11,000. If you looking for price range around $3000-$5000, I recommend Monport Laser. We have a secondary laser that is this brand.
How did you manage to get all the excess powder off the boRD.
After I cured the engraving with second run, I dust it off with brush. Then I wipe with LA Awesome and paper towel if needed.
Pretty cool
You could have talked about the powder in the video.
I was trying to talk as process was going so I was timed in what I said. However, I am more than happy to answer any questions regarding powder.
Do you have to lightly sand after application to remove any staining on the wood?
We seal wood ahead of time so we don’t.
Hi do you ship to eu, i want to buy pls
Yes visit our Etsy and contact us. @bcdigitalstudio
Use Rub N Buff on acrylic
I haven’t gotten settings down for acrylic yet. Any suggestions?
What mm acrylic? And what watt laser cutter?
How do you get the surrounding wood grain clean after the powder coating is finished?
spray a thin coat of lacquer on the area to be engraved, engrave it, powder coat, then sand the top layer of lacquer off
Agree with previous. We polycoAt beforehand then spray LA awesome to clean majority and sand if needed.
Has anyone tried harbor freight powder coat paint? Appears to be much cheaper than the alternatives
They only offer white and black but I have seen some try it.
Thank you for this great video, I notice the red has smudging around it. I am new to all this. How do you solve this problem. Am I to assume it would just get sanded off?
Yes, red and blue are little more difficult to get off. After it’s done I use brush to get off loose powder then LA awesome and paper towel to remove the red tint. If it still isn’t gone that is when I lightly sand it.
Hi, looks great and is something I have wanted to try for a while. Couple of questions... Is the powder coat hardwearing and have you tried masking off before the initial engraving make the final clean up easier ?
I polycoAt it before so it is easier to clean up, however, I haven’t tried masking.
wow looks great.I'm looking forward to get some powder coat locally to try
Thank you
Do you think this could be done on Leather?
I have never tried leather. It would have to be thick as you need a good groove to make sure powder sets in it.
The coating would need to be flexible. I have seen another Laser video where it was tried on leather and the guy said the coating was too brittle.
Ok nice, but what kind of powder is it?
We bought the polyester powder type in a gloss finish of 71-85. Most colors we selected were RAL or solid. The gold and silver were metallic.
I,too, would like to know which of the Prismatic line of powders to use.

What specific powders did you use from Prismatic Powders? They offer powders in several different chemical compositions and finishes. Just curious as to which ones you used.

@@kaylalewis6042 hi I want ask you does it work with glass And there is no shipping to Egypt? So how can I get it?
the powder isnt cured,,,, do an acetone wipe. you need to oven cure it
How deep do you go with the first engraving? Does the thickness of the powder coat make a big difference?
I don't go too deep. Just enough to create a good groove for powder to lay where it doesn't scrape out when I use the card to smooth. Not sure I understand your second question.
I assume this technique can't be used with a Glow Forge machine?
I saw someone with glowforge that said they did it by blocking the fan on Laser Engraving 911 RUclips comments.
@@kaylalewis6042 thank you! :)
