Grote Guitar Jazz Semi Hollow Unboxing and Mini Review
Just picked up one of these in the same color today for $299 after talking them down $100 since the bridge is lifting slightly and a small ding on the body. I have a guy who will do the repair for $100 so $399 total. Not too bad! Went in with a list of guitars to check out at the shop but after trying out about 10 guitars this one caught my eye and once I felt the action on it I was hooked. Feels like you are playing an electric guitar 100%. Sounds great unplugged or plugged in.
Keep playing.
I have early 92 Montara. It is an awesome guitar. Excellent playability, great sound acoustic or plugged into a Amp. I play mine on a regular basis. I upgraded the tuners to Fender Locking Tuners. I got about 450 in it all together. It's not for sale as I could not replace it without spending lot more than 450. Plus the Strat headstock has style points all on its own.
Elixir extra lights 10s.. the nut on these Montara's doesn't hold 12s an up very well. She Definitely likes the lighter strings with the stock action, unless you tweak it a bit.
Отличная гитара. У меня тоже есть. На ней играл Джимми Пейдж. Моя симпатичнее. Я бы прислал тебе фото но не знаю как?
Nice to hear a review on the very same guitar I own for 26 years now! Thank you. I bought my Fender Montara second-hand in 1996 and it is still in excellent condition. Actually, I was trying to look for some recommendations on which strings would be best suited for this guitar. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. Thanks.
My Sunburst 1992 Montara sounds best to me with Elixir extra lights 10☆47. Inherited mine an it's been in my hands since I was 6, about 17 years now. Fall asleep playing that thing in my recliner A Lot.. it's the most comfortable wooden acoustic I've played.
I bought mine in 1990 and never learned how to play but still have it in the case I open it from time to time....🥴
I have a 1990. The electronics are bad. I paid $150 for it with the intention of flipping it. After cleaning it and restringing. I liked it and now it's a keeper. I never had good luck with Fender Acoustic guitars. I think they got it right with the Montara.
Wow - that's my guitar! This is the first time I've ever seen another one! I bought mine 2nd hand in 1993, so I'm guessing it was made around 1990-91. This was a major, major step for me at the time because it was the first time I had ever owned a big "name" guitar. I've always loved that it has that classic Fender headstock. And yes, the contour of the body has to be seen and felt to be believed. I just have never ever seen anything else like it. Thank you very much for this video, it has made me so happy seeing it.
I've got the same one, same finish ☺️
@@SnakeGodDiamond 👍👍 Do you mind telling us a bit about it? When, where you got it, and what year you think it was made (if you know), cheers, Joey.
@@trioguitar sure, thank you for asking. I think it was late 90s when I bought it from a local music store for $350. It's a beautiful guitar, and no dings in the veneer or photo finish on the headstock. The binding on the top side of the neck has several cracks in it and has yellowed over the years, but is very much intact. I am unsure how to date it - the serial number is printed inside on the label starting with 90. The 15th fret wire is dented under the a string, and really needs to be replaced. The electronics seem to work quite well and I've had no problems with the pickup or onboard equalizer.
@@SnakeGodDiamond Cheers!
Enjoyed your video. Can't your pickup be repaired? It may just be a loose wire connection. I have the same guitar but it has always sounded 'tinny' whereas yours sounds great!
Just picked up a near mint one in a book store (random). What strings did you get set up. I wonder if 13s may not work
I think it takes a battery and a battery clip is inside the top of the sound hole. Check the solders, that may solve the electronic issue. I had a more easily accessible battery compartment and 'kill switch' put in lower in the bout on mine by a friend (it used to eat power whenever plugged in). I bought it in Worcester, MA in 1991. What attracted me to it was the (essentially) Telecaster neck, as the Tele is my main electric instrument since I swapped a MusicMan Saber for one in '88. At any rate, the action on the MONTARA is familiar in that way, and this guitar simply kicks ASS thru my fx pedalboard. Great for fingerstyle, blues, country, and weird shit.
I got mine around 2016 at the now closed pawn shop in Webster. With the intention of flipping. After cleaning and restringing. I liked it so much that I decided to keep it.
You are right about not enjoying a real 335. Those vintage brand name guitars has a "curse" on them. You're constantly and always keeping an eye on them. They're status symbols and everyone wants one, especially thieves. I have several and you have to be very careful when picking your moments if you're to go out and play them. It's best to leave that "Stradivarius" at home and use a cheaper, good makeshift type so you won't mind so hard about any wreckage or theft. Sure. We all want to sound and look the part. But so does thieves and misfortune.
Sorry but a lot of wasted time
Great video! I totally agree with you about the nut width on Squier Affinity series compared to the Bullet series which is more of a standard width like on a Fender. I have an Affinity Strat that I picked up dirt cheep (but very clean) and I gave it to my wife because of the nut width. If I do (which I looking at) purchase a tele it would most likely be a Bullet series. Oh before I forget I just became a subscriber.
My grote 335 is better quality than my epiphone les paul
You don't even know how to play a decent riff and yet you are reviewing a nice guitar? Get real dude.
Hey Marshall great video on a great little guitar. I have tried out a couple of these at the Guitar Center store not far from where I live.. They have a neat old retro feel to them that I really like.
Hey Marshall great video. I too am one of those older guitar guys. Picked it up initially when I was 13 or 14 and I have set it down several times in life to pick it up again later and try again. I have been folly committed to it now since 2019. I am 58. I picked up ukelele about a year ago and I agree it seems to be an easier instrument to start out with.
Lift up your voice to the Lord, Amen!! I love these old Hymns like this one. They tend to get overlooked in a lot of the megachurches out there now.
My Squire Affinitty Tele is a string through body, and my Squire Bullet Strat is a top load or Hard Tail. Squire Bullet Strat HT.
Yes Squier did change the Affinity to string thru but when I bought mine that was not the case
Happy New Year Marshall!
I agree. I've been playing for years and have several different guitars and make a living playing music, the Bullet is an amazing guitar. Especially if you make it your own and change all the cheaper stuff out for better parts. Then make it your main gigging guitar because it doesn't hurt as bad if it gets dented or damaged in some way from all that gigging. Gig life can be hard on guitars. Some of the greatest guitarists love these too. Cool review. Keep it up man!
I have a Hohner 3/4 12th fret about 15 years old. I look at new 3/4 guitars, 14 fret, and it's no sale. I play open D exclusively.
Nice review marshall
Like the story, like the guitar, really nice review, light up my Sunday morning and help me to made decision, plan to get my Montara 1990 soon, cheers!
You can buy mine...it's practically new in its original case..I never learned how to play it..the case gets opened regularly to breathe
How do the fretboard inlays hold up? Wanted to buy this one and saw the inlays were pretty shit, then I saw this video and you confirmed it haha.
I have had mine now for about 15 months and the inlays have not worn off yet. However I only play that guitar once or twice a week. I bought it because of the small size to carry in and out to my Sunday School class where I lead songs and to nursing homes where I play. Lol even my small collection of 6 guitars, 3 ukuleles, 1 mandolin, 1 fiddle and 1 autoharp all played regularly.
Can you tell me a fewthings about your guitar? I'm deciding on what to do because of all the things wrong. First, whats the nut width at the top and whats the width at the bottom near the humbucker? Mine has such a taper that three of the strings don't line up with the screws on the bridge humbucker. They are way off!
Sorry I did not get back to you sooner. I have moved and did not have much time to check in on the channel. I do not think my dimensions would help you out. I do not think we have the same model as the model I have did not come in Blue. Grote has several semi hollow guitar models. If it were me I would have sent it back to the seller. I only have this one Grote so I cannot speak to the overall quality control of Grote. I just know the one I got was fantastic and it is my favorite guitar.
I just got a blue flame Grote. Its a nightmare! So many issue's!
Nice review. Fantastic guitar for the price.
What a great review. I went and bought a Grote and love it, thanks to this fellow. He's a charismatic, RUclipsr! #respect
Thank you kindly! I created this video for those who really wanted a semi hollow but could not afford an expensive one but was afraid that at this price it would not be a good guitar. I love playing mine.
thank you Sir
Thanks for this very informative review! I have a RK Dirty 30s series 7 single 0 and I love it, but I'm also really intrigued by this parlor. It looks and sounds really nice.
Thank you for the vid! I just started playing a few months ago. I have a cheap acoustic Starcaster "by Fender" and I've started looking for inexpensive electric/semi hollow. Everyone raves about the cheapness of the Firefly brands but also say that Grote is better quality. Thanks again. I'm probably going to get the orange sunburst colored one whenever I bite the bullet.
Waisted time
Looks like you wasted time in spelling class too.
You really needed almost 35 minutes to unbox a guitar? 35 minutes anybody who watches will never get back. How long will it take to get it back in the box?
I apologize that my unboxing and reviewing and verboseness deeply offended you.
He was on youtube because he had crap else to do. Hahaha. Tell him to kick rocks.
It looks like a Ho' house pimp guitar. Very cool! I think the tortoise shell pickguard looks great! You can slip an old hand towel under the strings and use some of your wife's cotton make up remover pads and some isopropyl alcohol to scrub clean the strings. They will still suck but would be OK for a quick tone demo. 🤘🤘
Hey there bud
Glad to see you back to watch one of my videos
I have the same guitar in the purple. I was surprised by how well the Pickups sound. Only thing I did was change the tuners. The inlays are reall inset probably synthetic definitely not stickers.
Yes I have been considering adding Gotoh locking tuners
@@marshallbrandt1334 I went with vintage style to give it the Gibson look. Also went to a gold pickguard UW huskies call colors!
@@marshallbrandt1334 I also put Flatwound strings on it made a big difference sounds jazzy if I want it to or I can play Country and rock.
An update after playing this guitar for 2 month. I put Elixir strings on it and it really plays great and sounds good acoustically. I like playing it so much I do my daily practice on it every other day. I only plug it in for practice occasionally as it sounds great acoustically. I have zero regrets on buying this guitar and it does not play nor sound like a budget guitar.
What gauge strings did you put on it?
@@ADoraBell .010 - .046 Nanoweb strings not real cheap but not outrageously expensive
Hello from Delaware
I bought the Same Grote Guitar same color as you I love it I have 3 others plus a cigar Box guitar
Great job! New subscriber. Keep picking!
Thanks for the sub!
That is a great song. I can hear that with a Moog synth exploding the colors in a shattering oscillation.
Getting paid is the point of playing otherwise one tends to become a spreader of communism, socialism and social currency that benefits the owners of such end of life corporate warehouses. Charity begins in the family and to the beggars on the street who have been disenfranchised by the BANKSTERS.
I'd rather have Jesus and have all that other stuff as well. If Jesus said get rid of that stuff I would though. Point is, Jesus is 2nd from the top, he has it all. It's the placement of priority that matters. Thanks for your work. Nice guitars.
Thanks for the feed back the Ibanez guitar in this video is an Ibanez AEL30SE. I call it the world's best 50 dollar guitar. I went to buy it and the seller asked me where I typically gig and I mentioned the local cerebral palsy home was one of my main places and he said I like what you are doing ..give me $50 for the guitar and then he threw in what if bought new were well over $500 worth of tuners, cables, cases, guitar stands, microphones maybe closer to a $1000. So I was very grateful.
@@marshallbrandt1334 That is a great story. You are passing along the good things done for you because of your kind heart and desire to make other people happy. Music is the ultimate creative expression. It is a gift from God.
Nice. I hope Jesus loves us all. Seems like he didn't like the BANKSTERS back in his time on earth.
Been looking for review of this model. Great video. Keep up great work🤘🤘🤘
Glad I could help!
I bought the same gutar I am from Delaware
I live in Pa. Since the review I have changed the strings to Elixir NanaWeb strings in a .010 set and it sounds and plays even sweeter now. When I practice now I alternate between it and my Ibanez acoustic. This guitar sounds great played acoustically when I practice.
@@marshallbrandt1334 This Guitar is great one I love it and looks good too
Dude you seem cool and i have the same vox plug and it is a sweet little thing. Your review of this guitar is more than through and appreciated
Thank you, I appreciate that!
Nice axe, nice review. The headstock inlay reminds me of the art-deco style ones you’d see on a D’Aquisto jazz box... sweet.
