So happy to see Ancestry has made this update along with the extra DNA tools. Can anyone tell me why none of the other DNA/Genealogy sites have made virtually no updates in years ?? What is going on with those other sites ? They all told us they were in beta mode and would be making updates like Ancestry is doing.
I'm not sure which sites you are referring to but I do know that MyHeritage does update their ethnicity results from time to time. Just not as often as Ancestry does. MyHeritage also has where you can see how your match relates to not only you but to those matches in common.
@@familyhistoryhound MyHeritage is #1 when it comes to DNA tools for the genetic genealogist and I really value the site for helping me finally solve all 16 lines of my GG Grandparents it's just I haven't seen any ethnicity or genetic communities updates on my results.
My Irish dropped from 22% to 16% while my sister increased to 33%
What ethnicity percentage did you pick up?
With me it was the opposite: I went from having 8 regions to just 3. Before (2023): - Portugal: 47% - Spain: 26% - France: 11% - England & NW Europe: 6% - Basque: 5% - N Italy: 3% - N Africa: 1% - Sardinia: 1% Now: - Spain: 51% [range: 44%-65%] - Portugal: 48% [range: 32%-51%] - Basque: 1% [range: 0%-4%] It must be said, these new results are much more in line with my known family tree.
Glad that it makes more sense to your tree.
@@familyhistoryhound Yes. I was able to reconstruct my tree back to the late 16th century (with numerous branches cut shorter, of course: unknown parentage, lack of books, etc.). All my known ancestors are Portuguese (from N Portugal) or just across the border from Galicia (NW Spain). All from rural regions (back then), not at all cosmopolitan; if someone is from somewhere else, that was recorded. It makes much more sense that all my ancestors even back then were from Portugal and Galicia than from those more remote areas.
If we get involved with My heritage we should get more results and extra people on our DNA profile. If they do not it’s not fair and someone should do something about it. It feels like they are taking advantage over us and not allowing us the full scope of our DNA. They seem to know way more about our DNA than they allow us to know.
In this case we are just connecting our FTDNA tree to a tree at MyHeritage. You can upload your DNA to MyHeritage and for a fee you'll get access to the tools they offer.
Hi Ellen, I have been following your videos for a little while now and enjoyed them. This one resonated for me as I too love employing my AI squad of assistants to help write my ancestral stories. Using two AI tools with the same prompt is a great way to explore their features and decide on which one to use for your specific project. Interestingly, I am more likely to use Chat GPT Canvas for planning my genealogy projects, Perplexity for gathering historical context, whilst I use Claude Sonnet for a more nuanced narrative response.
Thanks I've been following you too. Tools in AI are a great way to get some of the work done so you can spend time your freed up time for other projects.
Just Curious, How Tall Are You?, because I Hard That Dutch People Can Be very very very Tall For Real.
I'm not tall at all. Some races are taller than others, but height is a complex trait that is influenced by a combination of genetics and environmental factors.
Very interesting. My DNA is a result of the specific region my family is from, both parents from the same town on the north coast of Sicily. 88% southern Italy and east Mediterranean, Greece, Cypress, Crete, Northern Macedonia, and Albania. Smaller percentages of northern Italy, Malta, and Spain which doesn't surprise me since Sicily was part of the Greeks world historically and a land of many conquests. What a mystery to me is they found 1% Scottish.
If you click on the region for the Scottish it opens up further information. There you'll see your 1% but there is also a range.. Which likely is 0% - some number. That is your range.. So it could be 0% which then might go away next time it's updated or it may get larger. This is your ancient DNA so it's likely out of the realm of your genealogy. Happy hunting.
@@familyhistoryhound Makes sense, Thanks for the info.
Your welcome
Being able to decipher which ethnicity came from which parent is a game changer 🤯especially when you don’t have a lot of oral family history
Yes it can help you with your research especially if either of your family had some unique group. Happy hunting.
The Slavic core of my DNA combined went from 92 to 95%, and like past updates my low confidence regions continue to migrate around the perimeter of the Slavic counties where I know my family came from.
It's great when it confirms your personal knowledge.
My England and Norrthwest Europe went from 74% to 80%,Wales went from 13 to 2%,Sweden and Denmark went 2 to 0% and Germanic Europe from 0 to 5%.Ireland went from 3 to 8%.Don't know where the Germanic link is yet.
Keep searching you may find it.. but it can be many generations back.. much further than your genealogy may go. Happy hunting.
11% Irish went to 0%, Scots went from 0% to 16%.
Did that make more or less sense compared to your genealogy. Your ethnicity is your more distant ancestral past. So 500-1000 years
i really despise the autosomal tests. they are not accurate in any way. they were invented because MT-DNA doesn't tell you squat. and they needed something women would buy.
Sorry I can't agree on that one. Autosomal DNA is the best test for identifying unknown ancestors. mtDNA is only helpful if you have a theory that you connect with someone on each of your maternal lines. Y-DNA helps to identify the possible surname you're looking for. Autosomal DNA will help you with all your family lines. But it requires genealogy.
@@familyhistoryhound The ethnicity percentages breakdown, by themselves, are not that relevant in many cases. The really important thing is matches, which, of course, are derived from analysing one's autosomal DNA. Y-DNA may help identifying a possible surname in situations where surnames are consistently passed from men to their offspring, which is not a given.
my 2% chinese and 7% danish take up the whole first line of parent 1?? What's going on here
Is that something unexpected?
@@familyhistoryhound those are from 2 very distant ancestors, all my recent direct ancestors are Dutch and English, would have assumed they would be the strongest.
I noticed that my Scottish ancestry percentage dropped from 33% to 11%, while my French ancestry percentage increased correspondingly
Did that make more sense for your genealogy research?
@@familyhistoryhound same really
Me too, my French went up and Scot down and now 4% Spanish and all my Norwegian is gone but now 5% Denmark.
My Scots ancestry went from 64% to 48%. These new percentages are so wrong on both sides of my family.
@@sylviagibson4639 Have you upload your DNA to other sites like MyHeritage or Family Tree DNA? How do your estimates compare?
I was hoping you would click into the profiles to see what sort of sources were attached. This to me would be the valuable part, not the names, dates & places, unless there are sources attached.
Valorie, Yes you're correct I should have clicked on one of the profiles to show the sources. In the cases I shared there were some sources... not a lot. I'll try and remember to do that on another video. Thanks for watching.

I have one tree on MH, it includes all the ones I have FTDNA kits to. Can I attach them all to one tree? They are my husband, my mother, and a male cousin on my mother's side. I also have a mtdna for me, but since I have my mother, mine is not necessary, I do not believe. I am also having my son do the 700 as my husband is in a link all by himself, and you need two to get a twig. He is the only male that I know that would do it for me on the male side of the family, they are all daughtered out. Will one tree work for them all since I am looking for different information on them all?
Yes one tree will work for all the people you have FTDNA kits for. That's what I'm doing for my family. First linking it to the tree and then going into each of the accounts and in the "settings" "genealogy" linking that person to themselves in the tree. What this does is when I a person connects to a person via DNA on FTDNA when they look at the tree they will then be taken to the MyHeritage tree so they can see how their DNA match fits in the tree. Hope this helps.
Interesting find. I will be having a look to see what I can find. Thanks for sharing
You are welcome.
The latest error situation: you can't choose the home person, because the hourglass keeps spinning endlessly. The new business does not bring results!
You're right I gave it a try on one of the accounts that I still hadn't moved over. It just spun around. But I figure if I get them all attached to my tree I can link them to the correct person after. I did message FTDNA and asked them about it and whether it was a FTDNA problem or a MyHeritage problem. One problem I ran into was I have so many kits that I look after for family that I got a message from MyHeritage that I'd used the two-factor to many times and I needed to wait 20 minutes. LOL
I have several DNA accounts in FamilyTreeDNA, but only a couple of them have been connected to MyHeritage. Other accounts always crash with an error. A new attempt won't help. When will the linking be fixed to work?
I would suggest linking to the tree for now and then doing the update to the person after it's fixed. As I said in another message. I have an inquiry into FTDNA. You could send one it as well. :)
Awwww so cute
yes they sure are
This is a great reminder to use GPTs effectively for a variety of tasks
Absolutely!
This is fascinating and will be so helpful.
Glad you liked it.
I can see using Scapple to just down disparate thoughts when in the brainstorming stage, then rearranging them readily in the organizing stage.
Yes you're exactly right I find it helpful to capture my thoughts on a project. The prevents me from having those cryptic sticky notes all over my desk. :)
If you don't feel comfortable uploading your GEDCOM file to ChatGPT you can turn the history off before doing this. Here are the instructions to do that right from OpenAI . “To disable chat history and model training, navigate to ChatGPT > Settings > Data Controls and disable Chat history & training. While history is disabled, new conversations won't be used to train and improve our models, and won't appear in the history sidebar.”
This is really interesting! Thanks for sharing.
It takes a ton of work to get RootsTech ready. The team really does love what they do.
What about multiple links between Family Tree DNA & MyHeritage. I have multiple links also as you do. Is there a separate process to link the other kits that I administer?
No I did the same process and attached it to the same tree. Key is going back to FTDNA and linking the DNA information to the correct person in the tree.
Yes the charging contacts need constant cleaning. Every couple days works for me.
You can learn so much on RUclips. :)
Used to watch the locator I absolutely loved how great he was so empathetic and understanding amazing man amazing work and so many times wished I could have him find holes in my family tree and those I can't find.
I use to love that show too. He's as nice in person as he was on the show.
👀
My birth story would make you laugh.
Could I use it to talk to several gigabytes of PDF's all at once? I'd like to "talk to" some old documents from the 1960's. Thanks!
I believe you'd be able to upload the documents and get a summary .
I'm going to ask more about this when i see you next
Might be a great tool for you.
Can I still get dna test for $39.99, Roots tech price??
If you check the website I believe they are currently $59 US on the dot com site. If you don't live in the US you will have to check on the appropriate website.
DNA is also doing damage to family unities. As some individuals buy into being "from royalty." SURE! What royalties? All those invented 1100-1499 centuries, by Germanic barbarian invaders that rewrote the histories 500-899. THEY ARE LIERS AND THIEVES, THATS WHAT THEY ARE, NOT ROYALTY.
Nice idea, thanks for this. I've signed up with your link. Looks useful.
Awesome, thank you! I'll be messaging you.
You needed to make his voice as loud as yours was. It is so hard to hear him
Yes, you're right. I had some technical difficulties and had to use a video from a friend.
I watch this in the same week that I told a close family member that I'm not interested in still trying for a relationship after a lifetime of trying. So I think about the saying that we don't disrespect people we have a connection with, and I think, yeah, and when you get a lifetime of disrespect, you have to take that as the message that you don't have a connection.
I'm so sorry that you didn't get the connection that you'd hoped for.
Fantastic tips! I've been slowly working through my tree and correcting any errors by making sure I have documents to back up the information.
It's a big job.. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for listening
I just started looking into the longest segment a few days ago because on my mother's paternal side....her number one DNA match shows up as a possible 2nd cousin. But all of my mother's 1st and 2nd cousins on her maternal side have a much lower Longest Segment than this person on her paternal side. Is it because a half sibling or cousin is in the lineage > If you could read these results and let me know how my mother is related to this person (approx) that would be a huge help. Shared DNA: 205 cM across 6 segments Unweighted shared DNA: 205 cM Longest segment: 114 cM
If you look at DNA painter 205 cM can mean several relationships including Half GG-Aunt / Uncle, 2C, Half 1C1R, 1C2R or Half GG-Niece / Nephew. My second question when looking at a new match is how old are they in comparison to your mother. When looking at segments you need to look at not only the length but the number of segments. If you have a few longer segments that can mean a closer relationship than many small segments. I think the more important question is how old are they in comparison to your mom from there you can decide which of the above relationships might make sense. Hope this helps
Hi there, I am looking for the author of the blog that this youtube channel is connected to. I am looking for relatives and ancestors of the late Ted Pendergraft died in Osoyoos BC 1983. The blog mentions an audio recording of Ted from 1982, which I’d love to have a digital copy of…..
They did a good job. I was there. It was so fun.
Have you signed up for 2025?
I tried it for the first time yesterday and as in the upload I gradually added more individuals who I could include a cM value for. In the largest example I had 6 individuals with cM values who all descend from a particular couple, On paper at least I have no link to that couple or any of their descendants. As I went through the different permutations I had between 45 and 70 possible spots I could fit, the 70 option scenario gave a top score of over 2,500 which was exactly twice the amount of the next 6x hypotheses (in reality those 6 were duplicates of each other and simply suggested a couple may have had multiple children, any of whom could be my ancestor). The relationships to the cM individuals generally came out as the least likely option that Ancestry give and put me at least two if not 3 generations further away than expected. In terms of dates the most likely scenarios just don't fit well with the people who should be in those positions as they would be either young teenagers when they became parents or in their fifties which seems to rule out females to a large extent and that's before taking into account the potential ancestors are over 100 miles from where the paperwork says my grandfather was born.
When you created your chart did you put in as many birth and death dates and you knew? How many DNA cousins did you put in the chart? If there are scenarios that aren't possible then I remove them and this changes the odds.
Thanks for the reply. I ran the options several times adding another cM individual and the value. The chart had 33 individuals in the first example and 40 in the final example with birth and death years for 50% of the names. Only the last two had scenarios that weren't possible (they would have placed me as a child or 4xgreat grandchild of someone born in the 1870's). As I added more individuals the highest ranked option would be about twice that of the previous test. with the absolute best being over 2,500, the test before that peaked at 1,300. I'm not sure what that told me but I found it interesting. Stepping away from WATO; My maternal dna matches either tally with my grandmother or fall into a 'mystery' group that doesn't match anything in my papertrail. The two groups do not have any shared matches/crossovers so they are two distinctly separate groups. I have a 1c or 1c2r, he only matches with those in my maternal grandmother group. I can't be 100% sure where he fits my tree as he was born in Canada sometime from 1945 onwards, has no tree and hasn't been on Ancestry for at least a year and possibly much longer. Scenario 1 is 1c2r where he is a great grandson and I'm a grandson of LC Scenario 2 is 1c where both he and I are grandsons of LC There are other scenarios but far less likely than the two above. For scenario 1 my mother (born 1924) and his grandmother (b1912) would be full sibs, that is supported by the papertrail of UK birth certs Scenario 2 would put my mother and his mother as half sibs. If scenario 1 is correct and the two females were full sibs then surely the dna from the mystery group and the proven maternal grandmother group would filter down to both of us? I can't think of a 3rd scenario to explain why the 10 dna matches from the mystery group only reaches me and misses 1c/1c2r completely Sorry for the question, I'm just trying to get opinions on whether my thought process is valid or not.
Glen please drop me a note at info@familyhistoryhound.com and we can take this offline.
How do I get the chromosome browser?
Ancestry does not have a chromosome browser. What they have is a chromosome painter. You can find it by going to your DNA Summary tab where you will find your ethnicity results and if you scroll further down the page you'll see ethnicity inheritance. Click view breakdown and and the top of the page you'll see ethnicities and Chromosome Painter (Beta). Hope this helps.
@@familyhistoryhound I spent an hour on the phone with Ancestry yesterday... apparently the chromosome painter is a BETA tool available only to select users who were chosen at random as "testers". I was told it would perhaps be rolled out in a future update, if it proves to be a useful tool.
