The Secret to Crosstepping a Longboard
6 inches thick and 30 inches wide. 😂
So cool for all you guys to share your knowledge. Thank you! 🙏
You said it Tanner "If you're not surfing crazy vertically in the pocket". Thrusters are my least favourite fin setup. Quads, twins then twin + trailer for me 🤘 Thrusters feel like you have an anchor in the back which can be good if you surf short, punchy beach breaks and want to maximise the turns you can get, but for point breaks i'm out 🙅♂
Wow sick clip
maybe talk about bailing in a barrel. Or what to do if you are committed to making the tube but you get clipped., like taactics to get away from you board
Asking about volume is like asking your girlfriend how much she weighs… it don’t matter and there isn’t a great answer
Nah mate you did well. Wave pinched in the end so it wasn’t like a stand tall on exit moment on offer. Better than me, I’m usually in the first wave horrors, hair in the eyes, leggie between the toes, stiff as a statue….
I think a lot of shapers are not so keen on quads as there are too many ways to mess up the fin placement compared to a standard 3 fin.
Not sure how you don’t have more subs.
yewww sic!!!
Live in an area with smaller waves so i really enjoy my quad. Thrusters are fun but quads are my first pick it the wave is good for them
I have video ideas for you if you want. How do I forward them to you.
Drop em in the comments!
I ride Timmy's Devil Fish with Futures Machado Quads, they are awesome. Been tempted on trying the new Album Mod Quads or Mayhem Evil Quads on that same board, but also on a step up 6'6 Twinner model. Please, give me some thoughts or insight about it! Great videos Kolton, keep it up!
Mayhem evil quads would be super sick or even the Ryan Lovelace split keel fins would be rad!!
@ thanks! 🤙🏼🤙🏼
I really like split keel quads on smaller days/grovelers
Been on a quad for 10+ years now 😊
Love hate relationship with me and quads like them better on barreling days. Noel Salas quad fins are best set I’ve ever rode!
My seaside is my favorite board and now all I wanna try is other quad fin boards.
Quiver killer with futures fins rastovich quad is my magic board. 5'7*18 3/4*2 1/4.
have you tried the stretch quods they are good 🤙
Ya those are epic!
Does anyone else feel like flat foil quad rears are less forgiving? They feel super knifey and hard to control.
Yes my bigger board hates those flat foils. 50/50 rear (the old Stretch fins) is the best way Ive got it to work.
Im full opposite, i cant ride anything but flat foil rears
what is this channel bottom quad Timmy Patterson? looks so sick
Tanner with the knowledge bomb, that was helpful! I’ve been surfing the Futures EA control quads for a year now without really knowing about flat vs 80/20 foil. Tanner and Josh should be in more Shralp episodes!
Any thoughts on differences between a dedicated quads vs 5-fins that you ride as a quad?
Quads are often slightly forward of where thruster fins are. Therefore with five you need to make a compromise with fin position.
I don't care what the board was built to run. I put quad set up in everything I can. Yes I agree, hi speed indeed yes works really good on your backhand maybe holds a little to much for some people but I'm heavy and can really put my foot in it to get it to release so with the higher speed and more power needed to break it free makes for more dynamic looking turns.
@@xwhite2020 yes I understand there's a compromise, but what is the impact of it vs a true quad is what I'd love elaboration on
I have a Puddle Jumper HP and a Puddle Fish , both go well as 2+1 in smaller waves and quads when it's bigger , the fish goes great as a twin too ! 5 boxes = choice . ✌🙏
@LeoMaiaProg Quads have two distinctive habits. They bottom turn beautifully (better than any board ever made) but the quads can get sticky while doing turns on the face. Fin placement is key here and shapers have really dialled in the best place for the front fins. It appears that on most boards having them slightly forward minimises that stickyness on the face of the wave. On positive note the shorter the board gets the less critical this forward fin placement becomes. I feel that five boards need to be primarily designed as quads with a fifth box as an accessory.
Lol the Tanner guy should just take over any future quad / fin set-up content
Tanner is the goat!
Every time I’ve tried quads I couldn’t really get into them unless it was just a day of pulling into barrels with that said though I really want to try a twinszer
Twinzers are suuuuuper fun!
Feels like you’re tracking my reddit reads. Shralp on.
Here’s the thing, Volume matters when your not planing on the wave, such as paddling, when you get up to planing speed on a wave that excessive volume is going to create excess drag on the wave and make it harder to roll on rail and hold rail, although in micro waves having that excess volume will help due to the wave speed being slower
Stand up paddle 100% corky volume, zero 🌊 flat surface Beyoncey🎈 vs skimboard low voluminous "Glide"?
Grovelers are great up until you get real speed and want to do a sharp cutty. Just doesn't hold .
Thick or thin tall or short. That's all we went by in the 70s and 80s. Liter, volume. I here you.. base wax?
No disrespect but this feels like a "Trust me bro" "explanation". Volume is a reference. Pure and simple. It can be useful to get an idea of the necessary buoyancy for your bodyweight (as a matter of fact, multiple pros' weight in KG is about 2.5-2.75 times their regular hpsb board volume). As you mentioned, even the exact same board with the same dims and volume can feel completely different. By that logic then no reference is ever reliable, not just volume, and each board is a double blind russian roulette... OR... you can triangulate dims, volume, shape, construction and fin setup to make an educated guess. There are no absolutes, ever. But saying just "Do an under the arm test" and see how it feels is the laziest "advice" you could give imo. I get it. But still, this feels like one of those "How to fly a plane tutorials" where Step1 is "Get onto the plane" and Step2 "Fly it!". Yah, No sht 😅
Sick wave and well-ridden, but it's not a make. For me, making it means having control and riding for at least a split second outside of the barrel.
5:05 he's feinstein to come out the stand up paddle closet
Didn’t you go to school?
Flashback fridays where you ride an older board and review it
easier to speed up than slow down inside the tube too, that tip changed my life haha Killer wave brother!
never disappoint🔨
🔨
Guy doesn’t know chit.
Bro Ian always said the first one is the ONE. You either make or blow so hard.
Nice vid :D yhea more of a beginner itermediate myself so using volume as a base guide as like a range i want to find a board in but then like the width and how to rails feel etc becomes more important, for the tube episode that you talked about one question ive always had and maybe its because i am not good enough myself i get scared of my board hiting me if i try to get barrelled is that something i can do something about maybe knowing how to bail ?
Kolton: “dude I almost had you” Wave: “you never had me, you never had your board”
I would like to see your approach/tech tips for more "basic" maneuvers like carves, cutbacks, floaters, and others
Shapers don't understand volume?
Too long a board maybe?
you should visit the north east
Volume is just another metric, the one that most people can understand, but there are so many other factors that will make a board work, rocker, rails, plane shape, tail etc...
I see a lot of videos about volume and a lot of people agree that volume is not the most important. But noonr exolore the fact that a lot of surfers that been surfing a long time get older gain weight but still dont want to surf logs ( u agree that a 220lbs cant surf a board that is 27ltts ) so what di we do go by volume ir not?
Good thing your photographer did an excellent job. That's a sick clip
fin talk friday
Love the new format! How about doing a "Freaky Friday" ? Ride some random strange board and show/comment on the outcome. Longboard, mid length, bonzer, twinzer, foamie or whatever. Just something different 🤙
