Summer Sun, Erddig
This is a little oil painting. I have been doing a lot of gouache lately, and it made me nostalgic for oil painting.... so here we go!

This is a little A5 gouache painting on MDF. It is based on a photograph taken a couple of days ago - july 2024 - on one of my regular dog walks. In it I will be looking at simplifying composition and using tonal value to create the illusion of depth and recession.

This is a very long video, sorry about that but it contains a lot of stuff. You may prefer to watch it in two parts, or, as I hope you will, to paint along - you should be quicker as you can avoid the cock ups!

This was meant to be a simple loose watercolour but I cocked up yje foreground, so it turned into a Watercolour Rescue piece! I was going to bin it but then I thought that it does show how something can be made of mistakes so here it is

This is a gouache painting. It's one of my favourite mediums but I haven't uploaded many Gouache demos, so hopefully, this will be the first of many,. It's a bit long, gouache isn't the speediest of mediums to use, so fast forward some bits if you want. I'd love to hear your comments on any of my demos so please feel free to let me know what you think in the comments below. Also, if you enjoy w...
Lisa's Colours

A friend of mine was recently given a set of acrylic paints. They were: Titanium White, Ultramarine Blue, Pthalo Green, Cadmium Yellow, Burnt Sienna, Crimson and Mars Black. I've never used this particular combination of colours so I decided to have a go. I found the Pthalo Green a little tricky - it's a very 'hot' green and tends to turn minty when white is added. It needs careful handling, wi...

This is why I haven't uploaded a video for a few days. I have been revamping my studio. I'm so proud that I an sharing it with you. First time it's been tidy in 20 years! Tomorrow I intend to do a little Gouache landacape... if I can find anything! 🤣🤣🤣

This should have been a very quick watercolour sketch - but, as usual, things didn't go according to plan! Eventually, I managed to make something of it but once again, if you learn anything it will be by my mistakes!

This is a very simple watercolour, roughly based on a Roland Hilder composition. It only took about 30 minutes but I'm quite pleased with the result. although I will crop it when I mount it. Never be afraid to do that by the way - nothing is sacrosanct - chop your work down to make the composition work better, change the shape, even cut it up to make a collage - it's yours to do what you want w...

This is painted using Ron Ranson's palette of colours and his choice of brushes: the large Hake, 3/4inch flat synthetic and a rigger - no 2 I think It's om 1/4 imperial Arches paper. As usual, things don't always go according to plan, but I think it turns out OK in the end

This started off as a demonstration of painting clouds using negative shapes. It started well but, as you will see, it rapidly became a chapter of accidents. in the end, I think I managed to pull something out of the bag by using my trusty gouache paints.

This painting is based on a photograph that I took a couple of days ago while out on a friend's (shared!) narrowboat. It's a watercolour, painted loosely in the main and with a few touches of gouache to add contrast here and there

This is a very quick loose watercolour using SAA imitation sable brushes and Cotman Watercolours. It's on SAA practice paper so some of the wet in wet technique leaves a bit to be desired but it does show how paint behsaves at different stages of wetness.

I have just discovered your channel. I have more space than you but am a lot more disorganised! You get a lot into a small space. I discovered Rowland Hilder about 20 years ago, and thought his work was great. I have only just taken up art reasonably seriously so it is a great idea to use Rowland Hilder as an inspiration. I live in Dorset.

Incidentally, we discovered a new [to us] dog walk only a couple of miles from home and it made me realise how lucky and spoiled for choice we are up here.
