SG or Ibanez, surprisingly difficult, if you're talking an Ibanez in the same price bracket as the SQ. Ibanez makes some great products. Also keep in mind that I'm biased against the neck scale length of most Gibsons. I'm a 25½ scale guy... that being said, Ibanez would have lots of models to choose from in the SG price range. Being blinded by my own preferences, I'd probably pick the Ibanez. The AZ line has gotten rave reviews also.

@@onevoiceinc Ya actually I'm leaning towards the Ibanez AZ2402-TFF Tri Fade Burst color, It has 2 Seymour Duncan Hyperion humbuckers and costs like 2 grand.

At that price, you might even be able to snag a used Musicman Sabre (but I'm super biased, hahaha)... but if you like Ibanez, they make great guitars, so I applaud your choice. It sounds like the amp, so it just gives you even more of the amp for live dynamic options. I'll be doing some kind of part 2 of this video, but I may end up doing a future video highlighting the pedals I run, why, and what they do. If you end up looking for a ~boost~ kinda pedal, check out the Lightspeed. Like the amp, it doesn't disappoint. :)

This amp has definitely become my favorite amp ever. I only recently discovered it a few months ago, and it continues to be a game changer for me. I have a relatively small pedal setup I can pass your way to enhance/fine tune the sound if you need it also. I •was• originally running a Wampler Tumnus Deluxe with it (to add more subtle layers of gain) until just recently when a subscriber introduced me to the Greer Lightspeed (Organic Drive), and it once again became a game changer as well. You may not even need that, though, considering the amp is a powerful sound engine on its own. Regardless, I LOVE this amp, and it easily checks all the boxes. Glad to see you got one!! Fender got this one so right! :)

@@onevoiceinc Thanks, I for now will just start with my MXT badass 77 to get a controlled jump in gain/volume for leads when using the crunch channel as rythm, that is because there is a hugh jump in volume going from chrunch to high gain. One thing that I am really interested on is getting or even creating myself a decent profile with the ToneX, I just don't have the reamping boxes needed for that, but I think this is a sound I would hate to loose in the future, after all it is a PCB based circuit so technicians will depend on spare replacement PCBs from Fender to keep these amps alive.

@chrisgeo1642 I normally never go to Guitar Center as is - if I do, it's only because something major popped up and I need it sooner than Sweetwater can ship it. (In that case, I ran out of strings, which I never do... and I let my eyes talk me into that guitar.) That was a woopsie never do that again moment that happened years ago. I lived and I learned, lol.

So yeah, I'm thinking Fender took a risk (I have to applaud them for that), but with a little bit of marketing, I think it could've taken off. Maybe. I love mine. Both of them. In addition to the RUclips channel, playing for my church, and entertaining the idea of a reunion show with my last original project (do I ~really~ want to do another club gig? Haha. We'll see. If I do, they better let us play at normal volumes), I've been involved in a recording project... and man, the tone options are Crazy! It's easier to operate and balance than my DSL40, and it just absolutely rocks. So happy with it. :) Rock, progressive rock, metal (which I sometimes dabble with), pop, jazz, fusion... it's all there in that little beast. What kind of pedals are you running with yours? The ones I listed in the video are literally what I'm running. It's so good, I parked my Strymon BlueSky and started mostly only using that with my Taylor acoustic (or for occasional layers in recording).

@@onevoiceinc awesome - it really is a fantastic. I think I would be fine in a pinch without any pedals with this amp. But that wouldn’t be any fun, would it?! I have the Greer lightspeed on almost always just to help give a bit of grit at lower volumes. Aside from that gain-wise, I use a Klon-style pedal, mostortion and a fuzz face. And for a little added flavour, a strymon flint, Keeley Halo delay, phase 90 and ce-2 chorus. I’ve rotated things on and off my board for years, but this lineup has lasted longer than any other. Also… try a JHS Little Amp Box in the effects loop of the bassbreaker. Lets you get the gain cooking a bit without needing to run at ear-piercing high volumes.

@matthewfrench5539 oh cool. I run that particular JHS also. It's a great alternative to an actual attenuator. I was explaining my pedal setup to my bassist yesterday: " this one reduces the overall volume without having to change the amp knobs (JHS). This one boosts volume, especially in my solos (Spark mini). This one reduces noise. (Boss NS2). This one adds a ~little~ extra grit (Tumnus Deluxe). This is my new goto delay (Halo) and this one adds that cool backward sound underneath it all (Boss DD8, set to reverse)." It's a great setup. With my DSL, I ultimately bought a Blackstar Amped 3 to run in the return as the new amp brain, with the Marshall becoming a speaker cabinet only for live play. Like most of all those pedals I spent, trying to chase down a sound to try to balance the DSL, it confirmed that (for what I play) the DSL just doesn't cut it for me. I ~may~ eventually do a comparison... but not sure. With the Bassbreaker getting discontinued, not sure if there's even a point for that. Not sure. Anyway, sounds like both of us are loving these particular Fender amps. That's a win. :)

Thank you for the kind words. I figured 1. I love this song and have always wanted to do a version of it (live or video) and 2. Everybody always does shred videos, so why not change it up a little. :) I love (LOVE) the clean tone of this amp.

Thank YOU. :) I've heard that the lower watt Bassbreaker amps have a hand turn knob (rather than the convenient foot switch) to change between channels. I'd suggest doing the research before buying that. As far as the 30r model, I run a JHS Little Black Amp Box in the effects loop, so I'm able to drop it to super low volumes without having to change my knobs on the amp. It's not an expensive pedal, either, so that's an extra perk. Hope this was helpful. :)

@@onevoiceinc Can you elaborate on that JHS box? Honestly I cant understand how different that is to cranking the preamp gain and then lowering the master volume knob. The master volume is meant to control how loud the preamp is being hit by the output of the preamp section.

@Javier-qk7ms absolutely. This particular amp has (on the clean side) a volume and (on the crunch side) a volume - so one volume per side with no overall master volume for a unified overall amp volume. So to balance both (once everything is dialed in and both channels are balanced), the JHS in the effects loop acts as an overall amp volume to adjust without having to mess with the individual volumes. This works best in being able to set an in house volume and a live volume without changing anything on the amp knobs. :) If that makes any sense. The Marshalls have a master volume in addition to channel volumes. This one just has the individual channel volumes. Where this amp shines brightly over the DSL models, however, is in the individual EQs and the ability to balance an overall sound. I was never able to achieve that with my DSL40. It always kinda sounded like different amps EQ-wise every time I would change to another channel. This one you can dial in those frequencies, so your clean, crunch, and lead sound like it's all from the same amp and source.

Thank you! I haven't gotten to try it in a live setting yet, so I can't answer that definitively. I know it's capable of getting really really loud... but that's all I know currently. Plus most of what I do live these days involves in ear monitors. Shane from @intheblues channel might know more on that. He did a comparison video between it and the Marshall DSL40. I haven't seen that video in a while, though.

@@gregjandt2841 I just watched both the Bassbreaker review and the shootout between it vs the Marshall DSL40 on the intheblues channel (again to refresh my memory). Per Shane fun that channel, they're both easily gigable. I would add, for quiet home practices it might be good to run a JHS Little Black Amp Box through the effects loop... both for taming this beast and to adjust overall volume without altering your gig settings. Hope this is helpful.

What style(s) of music do you play? If you want to go from Dream Theater to AC/DC to RadioHead to old 60's clean tone, the Katana Artist is pretty darn versatile. If you (like myself) prefer a standard straight ahead rock sound (with three to four different stages to go from clean to intense) AND you don't mind buying a very small handful of pedals to add to the sound (I could easily run this with my Wampler Tumnus Deluxe in front and the Keeley Echo Dual Delay in the effetcs loop and call it a day. Two pedals. All the other stuff is for cleaning up gain noise (Boss NS2), lowering my studio room volume without turning the amp knobs (JHS Little Black Amp Box), boosting the overall volume for standout solos in potential live settings (TC Electronic Spark Booster mini), and I just really really like the Boss DD8 reverse delay sound underneath everything, haha!), the Bassbreaker 30 is awesome and where it's at. I will admit I haven't played it live ~yet~ (I'm planning that for next weekend), but if it sounds like how I think it'll sound live, I will probably be replacing my DSL with the Bassbreaker 30 as my new live rig. One other consideration to consider is that these are being discontinued (for whatever reason Fender has for that decision), so supply for new models will be limited. I own both the Kat and the Bassbreaker. I love both. I just really really quickly warmed up to the Bassbreaker sound, right out of the box. It's the sound I've been trying to reconnect to since I sold my old Hughes & Kettner Tour Reverb amp. I think I've found it here. Anyway, hope this was helpful. :)

@Rob-ik6ri it should be loud enough to keep up with a drummer. What style(s) of music are you playing (so I can properly answer the rest of your question)? To be honest, for what I am presently using mine for, I get it remotely close to 10 or 11 o'clock on the 20 watt setting... BUT the drummer isn't right beside me, and he has some plexiglass in front of him so there's that. Regardless, it's a giggable amp, for sure. One other thing... IF you're able, I'm working on a review video for my new Fender Bassbreaker 30r amp. I am personally loving the tone frequencies and the extra features even more than my DSL40 (Totally honest review, right?). I just posted two song videos featuring it (a Peter Gabriel song and a Jimi Hendrix song), but I'm still possibly a few days out in the editing process for that review. LONG story: in the last couple of weeks Fender (JUST) announced they were discontinuing that amp. So there's a lot to consider - I love the amp so much I bought a second one, just in case I ever needed a backup in the years ahead - but it definitely threw me a curve ball in how I'm doing this review. The Bassbreaker 30r has a separate EQ per side (unlike the DSL), but the Marshall DSL is a tiny bit quieter as far as hum/hiss/gain noises associated with high gain (even at lower volumes). A lot to consider. My apologies for such a lengthy response, but I always want to make sure you have as much available info as I can provide before spending that hard earned money for an investment. :)

@ProcalHarem very kind! I definitely •try• to come at this from the "if I'm on a budget and only able to buy one thing, what would I want to know about with this product?" mindset. For a larger part of my guitar journey, that was my own reality. If I can help one person avoid buyer's remorse (from their own hard earned cash), sign me up! :) On that note, I bought and tried out a VERY competitive amp (to the DSL) a few months ago - the Fender Bassbreaker 30r. If you're looking to buy an amp currently, please look at that also. I'm trying to get a legit review video out for it ASAP, but I can't seem to get it out fast enough with work schedule. Both amps have strong selling points. I find myself loving the Bassbreaker 30r more than the DSL40 (personally for my own individual musical tastes). There are a small handful of review videos on RUclips in the meantime... while I try to push to get this review out. I'll add, it's also loud! I'm using a JHS Little Black Amp Box and a Boss Noise Suppressor to make it home friendly, but unlike the DSL, it has separate EQs for both the clean and the dirty channel(s). @JamesHawkins-m2s one thing to add (after discovering it a few months ago): try the Fender Bassbreaker 30r, or at least look it up and see if it's the absolute perfect amp. It rocks brutally AND gets those Eric Johnson cleans so well! I'm actually working on a review for it now. I still actively use the Marshall live and still love it, but I've gone over the moon with the Bassbreaker 30r. It has an EQ pet channel, and the natural amp frequencies are to die for. It's a new discovery I've been using the past two or three months (and since posting this Marshall review). :)

@onevoiceinc I'm a huge fan of AIC as well. It's funny cause I know most people, and the music industry group Soundgarden and AIC together because they came out of the same city around the same time, but to me, it's hard to compare them to each other. Its like comparing Led Zeppelin to Pink Floyd. Sure they are both rock bands that came out-of England in the 60s and 70s, and they both changed the landscape of popular music, but they are so different. Idk if that's a good analogy but it makes sense to me.

@onevoiceinc I can totally relate to experimenting with different ways to record audio and video in the pursuit of better tone and higher quality audio. I've been scouring YT and online forums and spent a few thousand dollars on different audio gear learning how to record myself playing guitar. I started a Guitar YT channel about a year ago. I haven't posted anything in about 4 or 5 months because Iost my job and have had some other stressors in my life, but I need to get back to being creative. Honestly, I think I started the YT channel because of the allure of different potential revenue streams and also all the free gear I see other channels get. Lol. If I'm honest with myself I think I'd be misusing my time making gear videos when it's not my true passion and won't help me with what I actually want to do. Instead I've been using my time writing songs and trying to get the best possible recording of them.

@michaelmay9059 believe it or not, I originally started this channel as an extension of a free guitar theory/ education site I had created. Prior to the site, i was going to just do live music theory seminars (?) as an extension of my other musical projects and duties to help guitarists get more out of their instrument and be able to learn live content faster as a result. It got shot down by some ~naysayers~ who could also pull some strings. I refused to be defeated, and I got the idea to start a site and later this channel. My thoughts were to keep it free and keep those annoying commercials off the site and the YT channel, so I never monetized the channel... only to realize YT adds advertising anyway (sigh). Somehow, it's shifted into more of a gear review channel over the years. But yeah, being able to create and help people has been the motivation, even if it's helping people to be able to make better informed information on gear (and not regretting spending their hard earned money on gear they won't like or need). It all starts with creating music, though. From there, creating various forms to deliver it (ie recording, live shows, RUclips, etc). I visited your channel just now, and noticed you had a Collective Soul song on your site that I've also been working on for the review video I've been working toward. Funny! Small world! But let me say YOU CAN DO MOST OF EVERYTHING YOU SET YOUR MIND TO DO (minus flying or wall crawling. That just doesn't work, haha). @michaelmay9059 yes!! When I used to hear "Seattle bands," I used to ask, "Which one? Hendrix, Heart, Queensryche, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, or?") Such a great music hub for such musical diversity and creativity. :)

The Bassbreaker 30r also has an effects loop. I am actually working on a review video (actually 3 videos when all is said and done) about that amp. It's Fender's answer to the Marshall dsl40cr. I'm really impressed with it. It's like the DSL series minus the shrill highs but with two separate EQs (so you can better balance between the clean and the crunch channels. It technically has 3 channels counting the Extra Gain mode (that builds off the crunch channel). Two years later, I still use this same Marshall DSL, but I'm really close to using the Bassbreaker 30r in its place. As much as I love the Marshall, had I known about the Bassbreaker 30r at the time and tried it out, I may have bought it instead. If you're looking to buy an amp, I'd definitely recommend at least checking it out also. For many the DSL checks their boxes, but I am VERY surprised that Fender came out with an amp in this case that runs pretty neck and neck. Like their Special Edition Custom telecaster series, there's almost zero advertisements about it. One other difference worth mentioning, however, is the Bassbreaker 30r (I keep listing that number because the Bassbreaker 15 is not nearly as usable or versatile as the 30r, FYI) is LOUD. I get around that and use it at home by running a JHS Little Black Amp Box in the effects loop to lower the volume. Aside from that, it's perfect in my opinion. I know this was a Marshall DSL video, but I wanted to bring all this up after discovering what I would consider a potentially better alternative. Hindsight... and yeah, I 100% agree, though, about effects loops. Seems like they should be in EVERY amp. Not sure why most Fender amps don't just design that already. Doesn't make any sense, huh? OK I skimmed through the rest. For sample 2 it's the same. Katana/Marshall. For sample 3 it's the opposite. Edit: also, you have image stabilization on in your lens. I can hear it. I'm not sure you need it on a tripod my man :).

If so, I'd ask you to try the Fender Bassbreaker 30r alongside it and then decide. (It's also in the same price range.) I got one just recently, and in my opinion, it's phenomenal, plus it has additional options (and a separate EQ for the high gain channel and better switching.) I'll be doing a review video on that one soon. It's absolutely great for getting the Marshall sound. If you're wanting an overall great amp with diverse options, I'd actually suggest you check out the Fender Bassbreaker 30r. I got one semi-recently, and it really gives the DSL a strong run. They're so similar, but the Fender has two separate EQs, which is what Marshall ~should~ have done (in hindsight). I use both and love them both, but if I had to only use one or the other, I'd take the Bassbreaker. It's really loud though, so you'd probably want to buy the JHS Little Black Amp box with it if you're wanting to play it at home. Honest reviews, that's what I try to do. :)

I haven't heard the Mk3 yet, but I'm betting it'll be super versatile. :)

@HotGates I haven't. To be honest, recently I got a Fender Bassbreaker 30r to try out. It's become my new favorite. I still regularly use my Marshall, but the Bassbreaker has blown my mind. (I think it may sound better than the Marshall.) As far as the Katana, I've used it for live and recording aspects a ton over the years. Recently, though, I ran into an up-and-coming guitarist that I might be donating it to, to help him along. The Katana is an absolute beast for so many things. Wish they had been around when I began my musical journey.

@@onevoiceinc I'll check out the fender too, But my story goes I started playing guitar in 82 at 17yrs old so I had all the yummy things from back then but my favorite amp back then was the Peavey 5150, And after my 2nd daughter was born in 94 I quit playing and put my fender strat under the bed until I picked it back up last year. But technology has changed and the katana seems nice but I don't know if I want to mess with apps to make it sound right.

Thank you! Yes, many of these type videos will sidestep worship and go right into the edgier styles. More and more I feel like worship needs to move a bit more into the spotlight... especially given that I've been playing in churches since 2003. :) And yes, I absolutely LOVE this guitar. I honestly can't put it down. I'm trying really hard to get my Fender Special Edition guitars back into their normal rotation, but I can't seem to put the Sabre down, hahaha.

I won't lie, I spent a BUNCH of time creating that tone. Lots of trial and error before finally dialing it in. :)

The feel is the biggest area where you'll notice the biggest difference between the two. The beauty of it, though, is someone on a tight budget can grab a Kat and sound like a Boss through a PA at a venue, so that's a win. Being totally transparent, there have been times where I could hear the digital aspects, but typically I was the only one who could where I was playing. Believe it or not (and this will sound fictional even though it's real) I've fooled MANY very seasoned musicians over the years with solid state equipment - very much including one of those Line 6 Bogner/ hybrid Spider amps years and years ago. (I don't think you could pay me to play through it now, hahaha. It sounds like a toy.) I fooled a very reputable producer once with a solid state Hughes and Kettner. I actually caught him later on peeking in the back of the amp with a flashlight trying to find the tubes, hahaha. My more recent amp of choice: the Fender Bassbreaker 30r (tube amp). It sounds incredible. I'll be doing a review on that one soon, so stay tuned. :)

I personally think so, although I guess it depends on what you define as metal (that name seems to mean different things to different people and seems to change regularly, hahaha) and how much high gain you're wanting. It'll do Metallica no problem just the amp. Beyond that, you probably want a boost pedal. The BOSS SD1 is popular with this amp, and it's only $60. How that helps. :)

Thank you! I recently got a Musicman Sabre core model, and even still, this specific Fender still gets a LOT of play. It's a great all around instrument - live, studio, you name it. The pickups, the neck, the weight and comfortability... everything about it is top shelf. I don't know why Fender doesn't advertise it. That's the great mystery. :) If you do purchase it, you'll love it, I'm sure of it. And thanks again for the kind words. The people who view my channel are so cool. Thank you! I love that album so much. I haven't tried that particular Yamaha. I'll say, though, the Taylor is so easy to play, and it sounds great either direct or mic'd. The pickup system they use is very top shelf. Let me know what you end up going with (and if it's awesome). It's a great amp. All I'd say is check out the Fender Bassbreaker 30r and compare the two just to maximize your options. I have both amps (i just bought the Bassbreaker recently), and each one is great. :)

That's a huge win! You ended up with a treasure, I see. Just so you know, I'm not paid by Marshall or RUclips - just a guy trying to help and give some kind of indicator of how different things (I run across) sound and hopefully prevent any buyer's remorse (if I can help it - I've had plenty in my lifetime, lol). Very glad to hear you were able to acquire that amp, though, and you turned it into something amazing, it sounds like. That's one of my biggest mottos: use what you have and make the best of it. Sounds like you did exactly that. Win. :)

@@onevoiceinc well its a different animal, I run closed 2x12 cabs, this is a partially open cab and 1 speaker. It’s a nice little practice amp for my computer room when I’m working on some recordings I just meant it will never replace my current setup. I must admit that GC. probably tossed it because they couldn’t fix it and sell it with any kind of warranty, and clearly Marshall or GC just wrote it off as insurance, and I bet they don’t let their employees go through their own dumpsters…or they weren’t knowledgeable enough to fix it

​@nasticanasta I just recently bought a Fender Bassbreaker 30r, and I gotta say, it sounds killer. I'm currently running the Marshall live (and I'm running a Blackstar Amped 3 into the Marshall's return to get 3 usable channels in a live context for fluctuating dynamics - it's a nice balanced sound overall. I find the Marshall is built more for a certain kind of rock feel, and I need more diverse styles for what I'm playing). I eventually hope to do a Marshall dsl vs Fender Bassbreaker comparison video, but we'll see how that goes. I definitely know, regardless, that I love tube-driven sounds. :)
