Thanks for the book. I've just gotten past the Shiny Beast days and am looking forward to track notes. That said, I wanted to write a longer answer but this isn't really the forum for that. In short, I wish I had known before how the music really came about instead of the myth of his genius leadership; believing the myth as I did retroactively makes me feel complicit in the kind of show business lie the music is supposed to be above. Oh well... I appreciate that Don did have a certain, unique kind of creative genius without which us fans' lives would be poorer, but from what you say, it simply could not and did not extend to consistent artistic practice, more's the pity. If he had let you guys loose to bring out the music from his raw material, he -actually all of you- could have been near unstoppable. Myths of genius are a commonplace, yes? But the struggle- *that* deserves to be known. Your book goes a long way towards proper recognition of the creative effort (and hardship) involved in the making of the music. It certainly doesn't make me appreciate the music any less. But there, this turned into a long answer anyway, so I'll leave it there. Good fortune to you and all the Magic Band alumni.

I love this guy, I use to see him at The Onenite in Austin Texas with Storm , then The Fabulous Thunderbird's, but this is my favorite , I love how he uses the organ, Jimmy keeps us in touch with real music, the horns , bass , organ, drums, this is something you could hear in 1940 on The East Side San Antonio, or Los Angeles , he is a great band leader and musician and if you want to hear him RIP it up listen to the first 4 Fabulous Thunderbird's records , listen to The Jimmies, or anything off Girls Go Wild

At age 18 I moved to Austin TX. The home of Armadillo World Headquarters. What a wonderful place to come of age. Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen were regulars. The shows were amazing and so much fun. I am so pleased that I found Mr. K. ,Hammer of the Honky Tonk God's. What a classic. Thank you, sir, for the memories and the music Please keep hammering!

I knew Blackie Ferrell when I was a teen. He and Leroy Preston would come visit my dad in Middle Tennessee. We'd drink and play songs into the wee hours. Hell of a coming-of-age experience! This sounds great, Bill.

A painful read, (not because it's bad...more because it's sad). There are a few spelling errors and other bits of crud that a good proofread would fix, but men should let their wallets flop out and women should open their purses. It pops a few Van Vliet genius balloons, glad it doesn't stab all of them.
