I think the site today 2024 is now called Herrington Park. I think they should put up a statue of Bobby Thompson there as a tribute to Bobby. The park is a lovely place for either a picnic or just a walk with the dog or for children to play. The park is across the road from Penshaw Monument and when you get to the top of the hill the view is fantastic.
They erect a statue in either Falfield or Penshaw of Bobby Thompson. What do other fans say. He may be gone but never forgotten. Sleep well Bobby. Thanks for the laughs.
Howling! 🤣
0:13 “A system that is new to Britain” F*** right off! We invented the metro in the 1800s, ‘Metro’ comes from the Metropolitan line which was the world’s first underground railway. What it was is that we saw how other countries built their metros in the planning stages of a city, rather than how we foolishly believed the car would solve all our transport needs within major metropolitan areas. The 60s/70s was the time Britain should’ve built metro systems in all our major cities. Birmingham/Manchester should have proper underground metro systems not trams.
A beautiful Scene …
I’m a Leeds fan, so,obviously I revere Jack, but Bobby was an excellent player, and one of the finest. The brothers are legends in every sense, and will live on forever. RIP Jack 1935-2020 RIP Bobby 1937-2023
My favorite author❤
Legend ❤
Great lady never herd of her before. And I’m from Newcastle
Great documentary. The Metro system will be great when it's finished and actually connects all parts of the city
It hasn't been expanded since 2008, so have fun waiting. They want to bring it to Metrocentre but they've had the government fund plea open for an insanely long time with no funding.
Dandy. My grandparents came from NewCastle on Tyne. Love the language.
I remember in 1977 the newly arrived Metro Trains being tested on the track near Four Lane Ends. We used to race them on Balliol School field as the track ran alongside. We had the edge in the first 30 yards but then the Metros zoomed past us! Happy times seeing these bright shiny yellow wonders for the first time!
Now another generation can see another batch of trains being tested up and down the network.
The line to Kenton Bank Foot wasn’t new. It was the Ponteland branch built in the Victorian Era. It still existed as a link to the Callerton ICI depot even after the metro took over to Bank Foot. Admittedly since it did not get electrified by the NER unlike the coastal loop, it didn’t have much passenger traffic and closed to passengers in the 1930s. They were still using Ponteland station for goods and storage though in the 60s.
what song is featured in the credits?
That line of windows was the drawing office I worked there up until 1995. Some good memories of working at Swans.
It was the only time in Britain where there was an integrated public transport system with through ticketing. So naturally the Tories put an end to that with the stupid 1986 Transport Act. The party that doesn’t believe in government making sure it doesn’t work.
Except for Leeds, Manchester, London and so on where you can use smart cards to do through ticketing.
No thanks to the Tories though.
@@melanierhianna But it is not integrated. That means when you got off the bus, the metro was there and when you got off that the train to Sunderland was waiting. Public transport on Tyneside until the 86 Act was planned as one not each operator working separately. That was deemed to be socialism and a terrible thing ffs. We have 40 years of this bs dogma in transport and everything else
@@melanierhianna The other aspect of the change in the law was to remove subsidy. The system in Tyneside was cheap to the user cos it was heavily subsidised. So you got a frequent, reliable and cheap system for users. Result? Heavy usage, fewer cars on the road, greater mobility for people on low incomes, less pollution, less spending on road traffic infrastructure, fewer deaths and accidents. Most people don’t think about or understand transport policy but the 86 Act was pure vandalism
@@melanierhianna Integrated means not just through ticketing but also complementary timetabling so that the bus is waiting when you get off the metro and the train when you get off the bus. To Thatcherites this is wrong because it is not ‘competition’ ffs
That is a good route 🚴♂️
History. Its a shame its turned out the way it has.

Still a classic. Shes not perfect but she is iconic.
That music from 00:21:00 was also used in Prisoner: Cell Block H.
WEARSIDE not tyneside.
Industrial sites are flattened and filled with houses to cram as many people into England as possible. Don’t worry, I’m sure this site will also bring in many depressing and low paid office and retail jobs 👍🏻
A God.

A comedy treasure
This is my Nana she was amazing 🤩
My step grandmother and such a lovely woman ❤ Do you remember George Richmond, my granddad?
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK I think she divorced him not long after I was born and married max when I was about 2 so he’s the only one I remember really. I have pics of George holding me as a baby tho! Aw that’s so lovely that you remember her though
Get off the metro now!
Why
Top Pie that man
This was my grandmother, but I never knew her. She seems like she was a kind lady. One day, I'll visit the Angel of the North because I've read that she was scattered there.
She’s my Nana who are you?? X
I would love for you to get in contact as that would make us cousins! ❤
I’ve watched and listened to Bobby’s recordings and re-told his gags to others for years, and yet I’ve never seen this particular clip before, so thank you so much for posting. I recall years ago my grandad once played dominos with Bobby for a 10-bob note, which my grandad won and got Bobby to autograph, alas I don’t know what became of it… but knowing of my grandad he’d probably spent it at some point! I would have loved it to have been kept in the family, as Bobby was obviously a North -East legend who we’re still proud of to this day.
This is so cool. It's crazy to see that most of the stations even look the same today - those white and yellow modular wall panels will always be nostalgic to me
I Got My Photograph With Jack Charlton When I Was A European Cup Winner With South Shields Football Club In Maastricht Holland In 1989... ...Knocked In2 A 5 Week Coma...
Bobby must of hated being associated with jack a complete clown
Nope. When Jackie broke the appearance record for Leeds, Bobby's actually words was "..l am so proud of him".
Reminds me of the Nevilles!!
The Nevilles were never as good as the Charltons....and World Champions to boot.
Eeeh Am Home ... still got it :)
The farmer from Sean the Sheep at 1:08
What a great video, thank you for sharing.
I'm Sunderland to the core and freely admit that Jackie Millburn was one of the nicest men that ever walked.
Smashed up by Margaret Thatcher. Hateful, hateful woman.
Jack Charlton my hero on and off the pitch.
"smoothly, quickly, and reliably"... Well it definitely doesn't now.
The rolling stock needed to be replaced a decade ago, but the usual story no money forthcoming. They can't get spares and had to start cannilbalising the existing trains.
Two GREAT men. Rest in Peace 🙏
