      The problem is you start looking closely in places and you see more areas that need your attention. I’ve been exploring the idea of having solar panels on the passage. But it’s quite dark. Oo what’s batteries you built?

      @@TheOfficialBatteryMan Yeah, I wanted my inverter and battery outside the house, but undercover, so like you, I have them in the small side passage. Problem is I had to have the roof redone first, because it wasn’t fully water tight. Then I skinned the inner roof to hide ugly rafters and cables etc 🤣. I built Seplos Batteries from FogStar. They’re based south of Birmingham in Reddditch. Had my battery cells from NKON in the Netherlands. I’ve got 2 kits built now. I have a tutorial series on my channel because the instructions available are rubbish. Just finished the series yesterday. I left out all the grunting parts of hauling 130kg down steps, but it’s informative for people who buy these kits. I’ll be waiting for your next video. Interesting stuff. Note that your battery is LFP, so pretty safe if you decide merge the garage and side roof, but unless the garage roof needs replacing anytime soon, I would just put new wood up there and double wall poly as the easy way. If you don’t mind losing light, do a fibreglass roof and stick in a roof light. Will help maintain temperature for batteries later.

      @@GaryMeatsLife i’ve been trialling a light blocking solution with a temporary cover and I don’t think I want that. It’s probably gonna be the double wall poly sheets. I wanted to see whether I could put solar panels in place of the poly sheets but it’s already north facing and dark. There won’t be a return. I think you’re right. Leave the garage roof and just reinstalled a better side passage roof. Nice. I’m very aware of Fogstar. They are great. How do you find the kit? I’ve also purchased cells 18650s form NKON. Thanks for sharing. Will check out your video

      @@TheOfficialBatteryMan The FogStar kit is great and they were super to deal with. I had 2 different issues with each kit and they resolved them with minimal fuss. The assembly instructions are terrible though and Seplos have let people down on that front, which is why I made my video series. Lots of people like me need a simple guide to put these things together without blowing something up. I just about managed to figure it out with help and i'm an Engineer! NKON also great to work with. I picked up 16 prismatic cells from them in July when I was driving to Germany and back. I managed to get them all into the lower boot and frunk in the Model 3. The Seplos kit went on the roof rack on the return trip. Should have made a video 😅

      Sure thing. Faster EV charging and energy arbitrage. So I’m limited on how many solar panels I can fit on my little plot. Sad I know. I’ve cried myself to sleep over this fact 2 many times. .. So next best thing is fill batteries at cheap times and sell back at more expensive times. Provide the grid with energy at times it needs it. And providing me a profit on each kWh. So a way to transfer energy between the property and the grid faster. The project is seeing if this can work out. Or if the scale is still 2 small to make it worth it. Commercial companies exist doing exactly what I’m describing. But can it be done at home …

    This is a great idea. My problem is that nobody has it connected to a Solar Edge grid-tied inverter and my skills are limited but not afraid to learn if there is a teacher/instructions to accomplish the goal. Late bloomer bought solar panels 10 years ago and never put them up due to cost of batteries and replacement times. I think now is the time with LFP model 3 battery pack. I only have 5.3k worth of panels but this looks perfect for this project. Need split phase 240 inverter that is HV and probably a grid tied but who is telling the grid people. Just need to have emergency cut-off from the grid.

    • @TheOfficialBatteryMan

      There are people that do these projects using the inverter entirely off grid. Charging from solar and discharging through battery when needed. Needs to be done inline with the electrical regs near you. Would recommend getting an electrician on board for the grid bits. Can you use your panels with a grid tie inverter? Or is that what you have with the Solar Edge?

Tesla model 3 is about $5-7k and 60kw.,but probably usable 40kw. So, I can generate about 20kw a day over 5 hour average generation. @@TheOfficialBatteryMan No, that's the problem. The pack is 60S so I set the max voltage to 237V which is 3.95V per cell and the minimum to 210V which is 3.5V. This way I should be well away from the max and min voltages for the cells to ensure none go over or under voltage. This still gives me around 15kWh which is plenty for my house and I can even use it for an hour or two of EV charging. Once I get the BMS operational I'll be able to use more of the batteries capacity but for now I'm happy to be conservative.

    Hi Just stumbled to your video and was wondering if it is possible to self contain solar on a property, for clarification, we have a cabin and hot tub in our garden the cabin has an electric shower and a few lights but the hot tub obviously has its pump and heater, is it possible to run this small area on solar and disconnect it from the house ? thank you and have subscribed

    • @TheOfficialBatteryMan
      @TheOfficialBatteryMan 10 дней назад

      Hi good question the simple answer is ‘Yes’ the more complicated answer is a question. Why run it off grid and not make use of the grid? Length of cable run from the main house? The loads you describe use both lots of power (shower) and lots of energy (hot tub) this means high powered inverter atleast 10kw and lots of battery storage. You would need a decent solar set up to maintain that. Does your property have a decent amount of space?

    • @heathmorgan
      @heathmorgan 3 дня назад

      @@TheOfficialBatteryMan Thanks for the reply, he main reason for containing the cabin etc is because of the distance from the main property being about 300 meters and the electric meter being the opposite side of the house and the cable would be a nightmare to run because of tree roots etc, a major problem, oh and also the house is thatched and listed.

    I would love to strap an 60kWh LFP to the side of my house. It is the ULTIMATE home energy solution! However, I’m praying my 24 Tesla MY is prepared for V2G. As one was tested in Germany and found to be capable of V2G 😮

  • @ge2719

    seems like a very good solution. the panels act more like the roof, no space for pigeons to move in under them. no need to have a roof covered in tiles and then also panels.

    • @TheOfficialBatteryMan
      @TheOfficialBatteryMan 13 дней назад

      Exactly. Possibly a small loss in efficiency with heat but panels get hot in the sun regardless. I really think all new houses should come with in roof panels installed. There isn’t much difference in price between tiles and trays plus panels

    Recently there was a case where a custom lifepo battery destroyed an entire house. It reached a critically high temperature and although the battery did not burn, explosive gas was released into the room, which then blew up the house and damaged it so that the only option was demolition.

    • @TheOfficialBatteryMan
      @TheOfficialBatteryMan 20 дней назад

      O dear. I’m sorry to hear that. Lipos can be crazy when they go. A lot of energy being stored. But we also store that energy in petrol and other fuels. The batteries I’m using are LFP so inherently a little safer. They are outside and are being used at a far lower current than they were designed for so cooling and warming shouldn’t be an issue

    • @TheOfficialBatteryMan
      @TheOfficialBatteryMan 23 дня назад

      3 phase video is on the way. The process has been slower than I would like but there is a positive I’m not willing to reveal yet. That is a lot of money. Anything you can do to reduce the price? Digging a trench with a conduit ready for the power company? That’s a cool idea. Although I can’t see how they would stay in sync if you were to use them off grid on separate phases. I’m sure someone who has experience would have something they can share in the comments

      If my converter is correct, 24” = 610mm I prefer 16” (410mm), but with solar panels being mounted you get a lot of stabilization. 24” (610mm) should be fine as long as it’s thick enough for the length of it. Here in the Sonoran desert we get some frequent Monsoon winds hitting 100+ mph. You have to take that into consideration as well. All of my posts are steel, rafters are steel with the panel mounting rails out of aluminum- they’ve held up to 4 years of monsoons.

      You can plug in a Lilygo in with the software from the ‘Battery Emulator’ by ‘Dala the great’ on GitHub through the x098 port. This would give you the cell voltages highest and lowest showing the mV imbalance. This is a good indicator of health. The battery would also need 12v powered through the x098 connector That pack is LFP and very similar to the one I’m using. I’m using revision D. I will add a link to the project instructions on the GitHub in the description.

    The batteries usually have plenty of life in them, it's the contained electronic and BMS that is problematic. For most people buying and selling electricity wouldn't make financial sense as you would need at least a 40% price difference or so to compensate for the loss in heat and the cost of the installation.
