Hamilton Lake Solo Trip

Took a solo trip to Hamilton Lake. Had the Lake all to myself when I got there. Didn't see anyone for 36 hours. Best part is time lapse of clouds rolling into the lake.

What's remarkable is the lack of other people there. Got caught in a storm on Fairview near the top after we did Lucky Streaks and the Regular Route on the same day. Got pelted with hail on a little ledge then sprinted for the top. I was running off the top because the gear was humming a strange tune. My buddy wanted to die with his pride intact, so he was walking. When we got down his pack with his truck keys had disappeared, so the epic got even worse. His truck had to be towed to Modesto for a rekey and we both missed work. The next weekend he went back with an ice axe and hacked a hole in the bottom of the snowbank below the route and there his pack was.
Great Story, Lucky Streaks and the Regular Route in a day is a poop load of pitches. That is an epic day.
Kewl. Driving up from sea level and jumping out of the car with a full pack makes me suck air like I'm in the Himalayas now.
What a great day we had! I think our Group Therapy sessions are working!
You used the railings as an anchor?
Yes, that is all we used this time. I have put cams in the crack before but I feel the railing is enough. Fun climb.
How'd the other guy end up so low or does he just like hugging the ground?
He was on a beginner glider
The one time I did it, it destroyed me physically, not sure why, just a bad day. I was already messed up at the start after going the wrong way and slogging up a thousand feet of vertical dirt. My partner soloed up some slabs and was waiting for me at the base, still fresh and feeling good. On a good day I could have led but I knew better. When you unrope at the top of the climb there's the disappointment of realizing you're only halfway up the dome. I felt like I was on Everest without oxygen. "Man, are you okay?" LOL Out of water too because of course. I went from barely moving to practically running down the trail, leaving my partner far behind. As I descended out of Half Dome's death zone, my broken body enjoyed more and more oxygen. My mind fixated on the Holy Grail image of the water fountain at the bridge below Vernal Falls. Afterwards, my partner said "Man, you've got three speeds: slow, dying, and super-fast."
Same here. I am really bad at long day stuff. Everytime I have been on top of Half Dumb I haven't felt that great. Before I went this time I consulted my climbing partner in Bako. He did a 240 mile race in 5 days. He gave me a witch's brew of endurance powders. It helped but not full. At the age of 62 nothing is going to cover the lack of training and being overweight. Surprisingly this is the best I have felt in over a decade of going up top. These guys probably thought I was slacking coming down when in fact I had the gas pedal to the floor the whole way. It is like going to the dentist's office. Dread going in, satisfaction a day latter.
Looks fun!
I could not get John Rahal to do the simo alpine thing. LOL
Awesome Jon! We had us some fun up there!
Slabs are my favorite ❤️ Great video.
I did this as a top rope solo and the experience i disliked the most was all the spectators 😠
Awesome Greg!
Who would have thought over 40 years ago us climbing one day you would take my daughter on her first Yosemite climb. Thank you sooo much.
She was fun. Took my daughter and her friend up the same climb 10 years ago. We camped at the top of the falls. Rowen was commenting on the protection placements. I would stand on a ledge and reach high to place a piece. Following she would have to be a move off of the ledge before she could reach it. Magical day and super fun to be climbing with Rowen and Colin.
@@jonfrank5113 hey at least not following Jimmy R.

Another great video! 👍
Nice chopsticks, Jon. Custom.
I know I am not supposed to take anything from the National Park but I think I am going to start a Hamilton Lakes chopstick company and sell them on Amazon. I just need to go back and get some.
unreal trip!😯
Thank you
Great video Frank! Must be fun to go on adventures like these 😎😁
I can certainly see how the name came about. Beautiful pitch splitter pitch. So nice that its not littered with blown out pin scars every few feet. Do you happen to know what year the FA was (obviously 1980 or earlier)?
Imagine doing that in EBs
First
Ha ha, it looks so steep with the GoPro. Did it 1980 (I think) with Todd Trimble. Brand new EB's, it HURT!
That title scared me! Glad everyone is fine.
you predicted me holy shit
So cool
One of my "Desert Island Climbs" done in October 1980. Used every bit of gear in my rack.
Marjorie was a blessing to All!
My mother told me about Marjorie and we cried together. I loved spending time with her when we used to go to the senior center and make quilts for Birth-choice, and then out for lunch with the ladies. I live in Lee’s Summit, Mo. I tried to get down to OKC to stay with Mom and cook for her and then we would go to Will Rogers Center, every couple of months since I retired a bit early. Thank you for sharing your memorial video. My husband passed away in May 2019. He died in his sleep, never sick, what a shock. He was only 58. It still seems like yesterday.
Nicely done.
That's some shitty advice you gave your friend.
Go left ? Can't you see the sink he is experiencing while going left. Even beginners know to stay out of valleys and over ridges. You need some slaps....
Haha, love it! I got lots of info for you up river of the Forks! Here's a link to a video from Lake South America to Johnsondale Bridge, 50+ miles above the Forks (ruclips.net/video/Cldqg6evVG8/видео.html). Also, check out more on my youtube channel, BAKrafting, loads of stuff above the Forks. Thanks for the great comment on one of my videos too. In 2015, I did a 4 day inner tube down from 20 miles above the Forks at 50 cfs down in Kernville. Crazy fun! Nice job on your run! And love the paragliding!!!
Interesting place to land. Well done sir
We both agreed it is a dumb place to land after all the options we had but we both knew that we wanted to land there once so it might as well be the first time anyone has ever flown off this place. Next time we said we would side hill land it. In Bakersfield there are very few pilots and no one has ever flown in the canyon until about a year and a half ago. I have flown on and off here since the mid 1990s. It just seemed to sketchy. As we explore it, and it is broken down, it is not as bad as I thought. If you are ever around Bakersfield this is the place we have been working that is a few miles farther up the canyon. It is a lot safer than the one we just flew. ruclips.net/video/dn9obFccW8w/видео.html
Fun soaring! Like how you're the hill.
Nice chase footage. I'm looking to do some vol biv this summer.
Cool
Sustaiiiiiined!
I actually skipped so maybe just lost 14 minutes. Cheers!
Not quite quantum entanglement, but very exiting I'm sure.
What is all the background noise, is it almost sounds like a sea cliff. Just the wind?
That noise is the Merced River.
The river below, sorry for taking so long on the return
Great job and nice video. I used to climb, but never at that level. Thats a legendary route.
