CAN YOU BUILD A SOLAR HEAT EXCHANGER? YES, YES YOU CAN!
Hey folks. Sorry I have been away for awhile...won't happen again.
I have decided to add a simple to build solar heat exchanger to my floor heating system. Hopefully this will add some efficiency to the system. I will be making "How to" videos on the building and installing of the entire solar system. Thanks for watching. Please SUBSCRIBE. Thanks.
Here is the parts list I used. Remember you can use different sizes of tubing and fittings to build to your needs. Also check prices at your hardware store (you can get just what you need).

EASY CHEAP WAY to Light the box of your truck with LED lights. This is a great way to illuminate your box for little money. I found this kit from Walmart and it seems to work well, though I did modify it with a switch, and also put all the lights in series. I also have a tool box in this truck so I used 2 of the light inside it. I am very happy with the way it turned out, I hope you enjoy. .......

OHHH This is genius! I just got aome and thought maybe they would straighten outoif it kept them hanging inside for sa few days but nope, they look like i just pulled them out of the box. Thanks for sharing this!
Bless you, sir!!! I finally have a solution for my annoying icicle lights that have caused lots of agony over the years!! Thank you, thank you!
Ok that's great but who has time to do all of those. I guess ima have crooked icicles lol
Is there a video of the solar thermal setup for your system?
The trap line that goes down isn't for moisture, its for sediment. Helps keep your pilot light blue.
Very good explanation, thank you.
Is it a low voltage thermostat that could be controlled with wifi thermostat?
Hey, on your last video, you said you were gone for a while and it won’t happen again but it’s been five years. Can we get some updates on your solar heater and your in floor system? 😅
This is pretty much exactly what I’m looking for. Thanks. Curious to see if you did a video on your new set up?
What the call u put green stick like this. Kindly tell me. Can I buy clear stick invisible
Nice. How many inches gap every between lights
Thanks only video I could find on a single zone much appreciated…
Ive got an old system that was installed already in my house. Pressure gauge reads 0 and water doesnt cycle. Can you explain how I would use a pump to fill and add pressure so the water cycles? Ive definitely got air in the system. My expansion tank is 10 PSI so I assume I should shoot for that. Also, do I just dump equal parts water and anti freeze into bucket?
A smart man said this man is smart.
I did this last year to my icicle lights and when I took them out this year they had rust like bad! I live in Houston TX and yeah I had to scrub and rinse and wd40 the heck out them this year
How do you regulate pressure for pumping to floor? My gauge reaches 40
Do yourself and your family a favour get a qualified gas fitter and don't listen to this guy.
Great idea. I was manually bending each strand to get the curl out. How do you power the icicle lights. Since each strand has to be powered separately?
How much more was your electric bill
That is very cool! I hate it when my icicle lights are crinkly. But this would sure take a long time for as many icicle lights as I have! And I am curious how you would store this afterwards.
I got a clothes hanger and where the straps fit in the hanger I would put the cord and keep wrapping around. I nailed nails up on the attic 2x6 and then hung the hamgers
why store them? haha
Regular green antifreeze? Why are others saying you gotta buy the 155.00 5 Gallon containers?
That what I used. It still works today. Good news is I am upgrading it to a tankless system. I will make a video of what comes out of it after I change it up.
Gas needs to enter from the top of tee, sediment trap at the bottoms. A lot of valves but not illegal the 3rd one should be on the other side of the floor near fireplace. and needs to be hard pipe coming through the floor. They make a termination plate you can mount on the floor.
Thank you 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
How many btus is this rated for at what flow rate
Great job! As a steam fitter I have a couple of recommendations to improve your efficiency and safety. If you prefer to use a hot water tank you must replace the temperature and pressure relief valve with a 30 psi pressure relief valve. Using a tank in a closed loop heating system is very dangerous, you are essentially making a bomb. My second suggestion is to get rid of the tank completely and use the elements without the tank. You can cut your power consumption by not heating only the water used for heating not storing. Take a 12 inch piece of 2inch pipe, put a 2x2x1 inch tee on each end. Using a bushing install your elements in each end and connect the supply and return to the 1 inch branches. Now you are only heating the water you are using. I heat my 50 x 30 shop for about $2.00 a day. Todays high is -32C. I tried going to a larger tank and it just cost me more money. I have been feeling my system for the past 9 years and have more plans.
Can you explain your set up again? Not sure I follow. Are you talking about using an exchanger?
Rivstr, you are completely correct about the temperature and pressure relief valve. They must be changed so one doesn't blow the pex lines or anything else if something goes wrong. I like your idea of a 12 inch piece of 2 inch pipe for heating the water. Kind of like the heater in many hot tubs. They easily heat a hot tub to 104 degrees. When I used to work on them they were rated at anywhere from 2 KW to 5KW heating elements. Coincidentally domestic water heating elements are rated from 3 KW to 5.5 KW. A water tank heating element system you've described could easily be used. Because it would be a closed loop system, a larger thermal expansion tank would avoid pressure build ups so it should work fine.
@Rivstr. Have you built the heating unit you speak of? If so I would love to see a video on your system. Sounds much cheaper than buying an on demand heater and much cheaper than heating 40 plus gallons of glycol mix while sitting idle.
@@danielmooney2724 I also am curious!
Can someone explain why its dangerous to heat water in a closed tank for space heating, but it's not dangerous to heat water in a closed tank for domestic hot water? Wouldn't the T&P relief valve still open before any explosion? That being said, yes I would replace the T&P with a boiler relief valve since there's no reason to have high pressure in the space heating system.
for anyone who doesnt know the connections with the rings (at either end of the flexible gas pipe) do not need dope or teflon that is a compression sealed fitting
I was thinking of doing something similar in my garage but I can't do infloor since my garage is already built. I wanted to run the hot water to a radiator with fan behind it to blow the warm air thru.
we are using same system in old farmhouse one floor 700ft. our electric bill seems very high though.
So why did you out two shut off valves together if you know you dont need them both?
18lbs
And void all warranty to the tank. They won't last long
No one can see ANYTHING because your hand is ALWAYS RIGHT IN THE WAY!!! Why even post this video?
All the plumbers and know it alls in here talking about how wrong he did it😢. Acting like he’s fucking building a spaceship. Get over yourself. The funniest thing is that all of you are exactly the same, you complain and say everything is wrong but you dont know WHY it’s wrong. All you can do is say that it “doesn’t meet code”. I’d be willing to bet that this guy knows more about the THEORY behind gas than you do. That’s because he’s open and willing to learn and your A person who just does what they are told and doesn’t question anything or no why it’s happening. So let’s talk about this installation, According to you he did everything wrong but the fireplace works doesn’t it😂. Whats different between his installation and the shit work the last plumber did right next to him? Other than he saved $1000. No it’s not super clean and it doesn’t “look” nice. Are there going to be people that are walking around checking out his gas line? 😅Who gives a shit? I want you to tell us what is specifically wrong about his gas line that is going to affect his fireplace or life All the complex parts involved….it’s a piece of threaded iron pipe with some pipe dope and Teflon tape. The only possible thing that could go wrong is it could leak. Spend 2 minutes checking the connections with leak detector and its all set for 50’years. A five-year-old could install that thing.
30 below... do u think a battery blanket is also required. I'm at a place where it gets to -35 Celsius.
This could very well be the least satisfying video on RUclips.
Thank you, is that 5 300' runs of Pex or smaller runs? Is your garage standard 24x24?
Quick and Easy? 😖 How much did the 16 gauge wiring cost, and how many feet did you buy?
Oh good grief. I have been hanging lights for over 20 years now and all I do is keep is I’ll tune on each strand when hanging them and eventually gravity will allow them to fall. Yes, they’re not “perfectly straight“. However, that’s what I like about them and if I wanted perfectly straight icicle lights, I’d buy them bc they actually have them 😂
Great video...ordered all the items, but can you tell me the model of expantion tank you are using...how many gallons. And what square footage in your gargae. Thank you so MUCH!
How many gallons is your water heater and how many sq ft is your garage? Thanks
Thank you for your video! I had many of the same thoughts… Especially about the complications of the commercially available hydronic heat systems. I have a simple single zone system in my shop, and I’m going to follow your lead. Much appreciated!
Get that club out da way
Tee should be 1inch×3/4 so you don't have a restriction
Hi l built a open system radaint floor heat system where I heat my floor and my potable / bath water on the same system useing 2 50 gal Geo Heat pump / electric hot water tanks .most of the time it runs on the heat pumps at 500 watts x2 = 1kwh per hr verses 4500 watts water heater elements. Works will/ cheap to run .only thing is there is no freeze protection as it used water . But I well insulated so no worrys
Curious of your square footage of your garage.
Gday mate awesome video. Couple of questions how bigs ur garage n how long does it take to reach desired temp? Cheers
Man, that's some crappy work. Did you even bond the flex tubing?
Is there any chance you could do a video of how you properly got all the air out of the system? Or explain how you did it?
How do you know how much to pressurize the expansion tank before turning the heat on?
I put 2 to 3# in the system before heating. Then just monitored it. Adjusted pressure as needed.
@@thisguy014 But do you pressurize the tank before pressurizing the system?
