As an African it makes me understand things better. How do we produce a significant amount of the earth's resources eg gold, diamonds, platinum (Africa has like half the world's reserves), uranium (Hiroshima bombs were made from our uranium), chrome (Zimbabwe and South Africa own the world's 70% reserves etc), rare earth etc yet we are poor It's because we trade real value things for a pretty abitrarily valued paper which is the USD . i have a degree in mathematics, but i didn't actually take a course in economics until i went back to school to complete a second degree in computer science. i started off in physics, so i'm fundamentally empirical in how i interpret reality. i remember having this exact reaction when i first encountered these naive linear models; the idea that this was even remotely useful in reality was instantly realized as laughable. i actually was the person that asked if there was any empirical evidence for any of this, and was at least lucky enough to get a derisive, scornful response that there isn't and that even teaching this nowadays is not just a waste of time but actually harmful. you can call economics something like "speculative philosophy" if you'd like, but it doesn't even pretend to be a science.
