Decoding Pagers with Software-Defined Radio
In this conversation, Michael Smith and Sam Schneider discuss the history and use of pagers, specifically focusing on the POCSAG and FLEX standards. They explain how pagers work, the different frequencies used, and the limitations of pager communication. They also provide insights into the legality of intercepting pager signals and offer open-source tools for decoding and analyzing pager traffic. Overall, the conversation highlights the continued use of pagers in certain industries and the importance of understanding the security implications of pager communication.

Find a Cybersecurity Job with the NIST NICE Framework
Просмотров 58Месяц назад
We discuss the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) and its role in building a pipeline of cybersecurity specialists. We address the challenges of hiring cybersecurity practitioners and the lack of entry-level cybersecurity jobs. The NICE framework is introduced, which standardizes job titles and defines the tasks, knowledge, and skills required for each role. The conversation...

A Beginner's Guide to Software-Defined Radio
Anyone else use PDW to decode POGSAG and FLEX back in the day?
I haven't used it, mostly because I'm a Linux zealot and it's windows-only. But I am that old. 😂
"i am blowing up" and it cuts to the shot of the rabbi :D lol
Um.... wow! This movie, Hackers, was released in 1995, and I watched it on the movie theater in Germany. So it very much predates the current troubles.
@@SecuritySync foreshadowing :D
13:28 i also have that tism
It's incredibly common in this field.
What's the point in blurring out Waveforms and FFT ?!
TL;DR: paranoia about legality. Behind the scenes: we recorded the video and said "ooh, we're potentially in danger because of the laws around intercepting pagers and we just recorded 10 minutes of evidence and are going to put it on RUclips". I could blur the frequencies on the scope and the tuner tab, but gqrx does this thing where you mouse over the waterfall, and it gives you the frequency information. So I had to blur the whole thing out. I know it sucks really bad, but I'M TOO PRETTY TO GO TO JAIL!!!!!!!!11111
LOL. FFT means Fast Fourier Transform. not "Fixed Fourier Transform".
Hah, my oops.
It was an absolute pleasure meeting you at Defcon!
Hey there, cool stuff!!! What are you working on now with SDR?
Sir i dont want to get in trouble thats why i am asking sir if its ok please let me know to spoof it for some games
Then it's best if you don't.
Sir what i want to know is if i only use it in my room to spoof some games with gps spoofing how i will get caught and i am not doint it for something really illegal .
Hah, I can't tell people directly in a public forum to do something illegal. The technology will probably do what you want.
Bro how much are gps trnasmission of hack rf covers and can i use it in my room to spoof gps location of games is it safe?
Let's start with: it's illegal to use the GPS spoofer in the US and a lot of other countries. The signal strength is not strong, so the area of effect is limited. But technically speaking: for just a phone, that's close, it might work. However, if it's a phone, you can manipulate the GPS through the debug or developer interface. And some games are wise to this, so if you're in Paris, London, and Singapore in just 5 minutes, they know you're cheating. 😂😂😂
The NICE Framework... it's Very Nice!!! =) =) =)
I just received mine yesterday. It's the clear see-through with the blue LED lights. How do I completely shut it down so it's not on all night the blue lights stayed on and I could not get them to go off. Could not find any hidden switches or buttons there's nothing in the menus anywhere that I could find. How do you turn it off before putting the SD card back in? I don't see anywhere on the menu. I know that you need to switch off power before switching antennas could damage the final. Can I bring over some of the TV remotes I have from my flipper Air conditioning controls and a couple door locks from our RV
Just disconnect the USB/power cable and double-click the dial quickly. It's not only a dial, but it's also a push button. 😂
TV remote: Most likely, you can capture and replay remote control signals, but there isn't a "make it easy" application.
Hoi CTO, you cannot use a shell? :) .. indeed the video was interesting.
Hahaha, typing and talking at the same time is hard. I've been using Linux full-time since 1996, and as soon as I do it on camera, it's like 90% of my smarts fly out the window.
Can anybody buy rhis or itrequire some kind of license orauthorization?
Anybody can buy it. It's not FCC-approved. Most of the uses where you transit are technically illegal or really illegal. 🤣
@@SecuritySync what do u mean?
On the list of gadgets that I need to get. I just wanna make sure whatever one I order will be able to be upgraded.
Search for "Portapack H2 Mayhem" and you'll get the right gear. We discuss this in the chapter starting at 6:19 in. ruclips.net/video/dwEdW6fhBUc/видео.html
As a amateur radio operator I wish the power company would fix the damn power lines out back so I can actually transmit without QRM (interference)... iot devices are the least of my worries lol... but it is kind of surprising how many people don't have proper security built into their iot devices.... you'd be surprised at how much you can find on a person by just seeing what they do from day to day with their iot devices... Scarry stuff
The "S" in "IoT" stands for "secure". Or something like that, init?
@@SecuritySync what, I've never heard of s i o t... iot yeah I've heard of that.... and I've been a software systems engineer for 20 plus years, now retired though... but if they did change it up and added an s, then so be it. Lol.... still doesn't change the fact that the security features on many iot devices are crappy as all hell and outdated... if I can teach my kids how to manipulate it I'm sure others out there who are motivated can get through those security features pretty easily
Hey guys I met you at Defcon thank you so much with helping me with my HackRF one and I can't wait to learn more from your videos!
Hey there, cool! Anything in particular you're interested in learning? It's still new for us to meet viewers and subscribers.
@SecuritySync could you guys do a video on getting your technician license!
Awesome content guys! Love to catch your new uploads
Exactly what we like to hear. Thanks, man!
i was thinking for the on off button for the portapack it would be better to just lift the 2 pins on the encoder and solder them onto a simple switch. more reliable
That makes too much sense. 😂😂😂😂😂
Looking forward to all of the cool content that you guys are going to share :)
Awesome! Thank you!
noteoad++ hahaha
It's a classic!
@@SecuritySync I feel old
It's OK, neither of us meet the definition of young.
For the on/off button, one of those little plastic bread loaf bag cinchers works, too
It's like they're pre-made for that purpose. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
I have a door latch shim I put there for storage and as a stop for the button
I know some people 3D print button guards.
Very helpful. Thanks guys.
Glad you like it. Anything else about the PortaPack that you want to see a video on?
@@SecuritySync Honestly, I just got mine, know very little about it, so probably anything would be new to me.
It is awesome, Mike
Thanks, man!!
Thanks guys, currently planning to build my first home lab and found this talk to be incredibly valuable
Glad it was helpful!
I too run an ADS-B ground station with PiAware!
It's cool. We'll go over my setup at some point.
