Cut to Reveal Podcast
Польша
Добавлен 10 окт 2021
Join freelance editors Ricky Cozzolino, Piotr Toczynski and Erwann Kerroc'h as they discuss the editing art form, all the hurdles that come with that career path and talk with editors and filmmakers about their process.
If that's not an interesting enough description, how about:
Three editors, from different countries: Poland, France and the US, who have, at this point, never fully met in real life, talking about editing, filmmaking and freelancing. But mostly, they just make up questions and try to answer based on their 20+ years of editing experience. Also, Interviews! with that editor from your favorite show. (No, seriously.) And maybe that filmmaker you really like. (No, this is not a joke.) So yeah. Listen here or at any of the podcast places.
If you have questions, comments or ideas email us. We might use it in a show. (No promises.)

2024 Year in Review | S3E01
1st episode of a new year (2025) and a new season! Ricky, Piotr and Erwann do a 2024 year in review. The episode hits with Erwann playing "Love Theme from The Godfather" on a music box, he gifted the others for Christmas. Then he complains about not having a nickname. The boys discuss their goals for the year: Ricky and Erwann don't want to put things off and Piotr wants to get rejected more and something about exposing himself. Then talk turns to movies from 2024 they enjoyed (and hated), if Erwann succeeded in watching a movie-a-day in 2024 and what to expect from Cut to Reveal in 2025.

In this quick episode, Piotr uses learning to ride his electric unicycle BACKWARDS as an analogy to discuss with Ricky the way we learn editing. thanks so much for all the kind words about your impression of Sequence! i'm glad to see you really understand where we're aiming, even at this early stage. and we hope to get things buttoned up for a wider release very very soon :) (PS: on pro formats, we do accept DNxHD and ProRes at the moment! just not BRAW yet. and once the pro formats are uploaded, we'll fire off optimized transcodes to make them super super smooth to work with in the timeline)
Hey Fellas, thanks for the love! :)
Thank you so much for this! One of the best interviews I've found that covers the really important elements of editing a documentary.I believe this will be helpful for many starting editors and filmmakers.
Thank you! You should check out a roundtable discussion I did with some editors (including Jacob) in December 2022: ruclips.net/video/NQe3wVW-h8k/видео.html
why this channel is so underrated :/
Well, hard to argue with this :D thanks!
Video got removed
I wonder if we will get to see the deleted scences on the I Wanna Dance With Somebody DVD and Blu Ray release as special features?
he has a name why does everyone whos not the actor or director have to be known as their fucking little grip boy bitch, this guy EDITED these movies he deserves his name in the title
Hey, can you please let your guests talk without uhums every 10 seconds?
You're right. It's on us. Won't happen again :) -P
Okay this randomly fell into my recommended, thank you youtube algorithm gods for this gem
I’m so hilarious, I should drop editing and have my own comedy show.
hahaha
Call it your plan C :) -P
Ehhh you guys don't get enough attention here...
We agree ;) :D
Great episode! I bought the book after this episode. Excited to read it 🤓
You'll enjoy it :)
Nice episode. Thx, guys 🙂
Glad you liked it, Pavel!
Man thanks guys! You're so awesome...I seen this book a couple of years ago. And I have it, I work in television broadcast news and it's amazing what this book teaches you I worked on documentaries too and this is phenomenal.
We feel the same way :) And it still remains one of our favorite conversations we've had on the podcast.
Hello ! Great podcast 😄
Thanks!
Great interview! I especially like the part where Erwann, Jarivan, and John talk about their personal experiences, their life as editors, and their private lifes. Relatable and encouraging.
We like that part as well :D
love the game
We're glad to hear it :D
Glad to be Subscriber Number 101. I'll take it as good luck since I just started getting into video editing. And I can tell this podcast will be huge!!!
Thanks so much! BTW - how did you hear about the podcast? Was it a YT recommendation or sth else?
@@cuttoreveal googled how to export individual clips from a premier project... Cur to the point was first video up old one yhen watched new one ok exporting clips then the podcast was mentioned or something in the video.
Ahh that's right :) Thanks for letting me know! P.
Very nice podcast. Being an editor, it's hard to manage time for me. Well, still trying to get it sorted 😅
Thanks for the kind words, Prathmesh! Time management is a never ending struggle!
Thanks you so much. I bought the book because of some youtube video I'd seen (This Guy Edits I guess) and just searched for Jacob Bricca. An excellent complement to the book indeed. I just shot a documentary in Bengali and I don't speak Bengali. Same thought process about the subtitles here. Funny.
Yes, Jacob was so insightful. We could talk to him for another three hours easily :) Thanks for your comment, Mehdi! - Piotr
Ricky's flexing the tatoos, we have the 2nd woman editor on the show (and hopefully many more editors to come !) and LOVE FOR TITANIC !!
Ricky is actually getting a new tatoo in June. Don't tell him I told you ;) -P.
promosm ✨
Very interesting ! It was cool to see you invited Kyle, especially with the career he's making for himself.
We'll probably ask him for jobs down the line !
I think so too! :) Thanks for watching, Erwann -P.
Thanks for doing it 🙌🏼.
Our pleasure! Thanks for watching :) -Piotr
I know I'm posting too much, but with each episode passing Ricky is getting closer and closer to become Wolverine.
Hahaha I'll take it!
Have you noticed Alex got the little appendice guy in the background ?! haha !
The short is great ! It reminded me of Takashi Miike's "Imprint". Great cast too, I recongnized the lead from the excellent "Shiva Baby", Rachel Sennott.
Right? I, also, thought of "Basket Case."
@@cuttoreveal I don't think I've seen this one ! I'm adding it to my list.
OOoh, I'm glad we're talking horror this time !
We're working on getting some more horror editors on.
@@cuttoreveal I'm glad ! You may wanna try Kirk Morri (editor for James Wan on "The Conjuring" movies, "Malignant", "Fast and Furious 7", "Aquaman"), he's a great sport. I had a phonecall with him last year.
@@ErwannKerroch84 putting him on our list!
Wow wow wow. It was amazing.
Thank you :)
It was an awesome conversation, and it was an honor (at least for me !) getting invited on Cut To Reveal. Great conversation, and really happy to have met you "in person" guys :)
Our pleasure! It was an honor to have all of you there :)
38:40 You're talking about Peter R. Hunt. He started as a clapper boy, was given the advice that he would become a director, or not come very far unless he gets into the editing room. On a Thunderball commentary track he speaks about destroying continuity for the sake of creativity. ruclips.net/video/rQr3REjknvY/видео.html
@@MarvinFalz Thank you for the additional information :)
Wow, great interview. I love that Simon shared his timeline.
Yeah, I was super happy about it as well :) He's an awesome guy! - Piotr
So interesting !
I need to buy Jacob's book now !
Sorry :D haha
19:15 - Just curious if that's how reality tv works. From the consumer perspective, I've kinda assumed it's unscripted, but built around things that happen and people's reactions. I guess my question is how much framework is built into the story before being dropped off with the editors.
I haven't worked in that world myself. So we might have to wait for Jeff's response. But as far as I know, producers are very specific about who they choose as the characters they film. And they are playing into certain aspects of their personalities, etc. Usually over exaggerating their behaviors or setting up a situation to provoke/fake a certain emotion. Other than that editors really get raw, unscripted things they need to edit into a structure specific for a given show. But again - haven't really worked in reality TV myself.
Great hanging out with you guys! Cheers!
It was an honor to have you there, Jeff :)
Very insightful 🙌🏼.
Glad you think so! :)
BTW, Piotr is really awful at that game haha!
hahah
Thanks a lot for the praise ! So here are my answers: - Lenny - Margaret (extended cut) - Rubber - Deadpool 2, 12 years a slave, Thelma and Louise - Cube - The man with the golden gun
You're welcome, Erwann! Those are great answers, by the way.
Favourites back again 🤙🏽
Thanks man :)
Very interesting not to use the best take to have a more interesting character arc ! I'm actually cutting a short right now (and I should be working on it instead of listening to this !), and it makes me think !
Haha, good point! Good luck with your edit man. Is it a French short?
@@cuttoreveal It is ! But I'll make sure english subs are available when released ;)
@@ErwannKerroch84 perfect! :)
I have been in an editing room where I heard the director tell her editor that she had a VERY EXACT idea of what she wanted, so she was telling the editor when to cut EVERY TIME. I was glad not to be the editor there, and ever since I make clear I won't work if you're a director like that.
It hurts to even read about it :D
You guys are awesome. Thank you for doing this. ❤
Thanks! We appreciate your kind words :)
Hey, thank you very much for doing this, I am relatively new in the area so in-depth talks about editing are a really amazing thing you are doing.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for listening to this :)
