Nice but why did you put in the bar of 5 at 3:15? This leads to your score being one beat behind the band. They clearly feel the hits as 2s, not as 1s (as you wrote): (1) the motif they play is an absolute classic and starts on the 4 (not on 3, see i.e. Coltrane's A Love Supreme), (2) the drummer clearly plays your 1s as the backbeat from 3:33 onwards and lastly (3) the two-note trumpet phrase at 3:33 clearly emphazises the 1 (not the 4).

Fantastic transcription! Curious if you can think about this the way I’m hearing it for a second- By the time it gets to 3:15, I feel beat 4 in the music should be beat 1. I think the “hit” at 3:33 should be counted as beat 2. Am I making any sense?

I've been noticing this too Efraim. I became acquainted with this idea reading the Excellent biography on John by Lewis Porter, where he shows a lick that is transposed Rhythmically to different Beats in the Measure, so the Lick sort of does a Precession and ends up anticipating the chord changes. I believe it's a Charlie Parker Lick. Anyway, I'm playing through a Drum Book called "Stick Control" and if you think of the Snare Drum as being a sort of Two Note Melody, the exact same thing occurs. In exercise 5, the Two note melody shifts from the & of 3 to the One of the 6th exercise in which the & of 3 switches to the & of One in the Next exercise No. 7. Then that switches to the One of exercise 8. It's really a Mind blowing way of getting the most out of one lick cause it never sounds the same. It only becomes apparent on Paper when it's written out and analyzed like you have done. You notice that the first and 2nd iterations start on the 11th of Gm7, but the next one starts Two beats ahead so the lick comes in on the One of Gm7. The next one comes on One two more beats ahead over the Am7 and ends with the 11th again on the One of Gm7. It's like a Rhythmical two-five-One. It's kind of hard to explain but it shows just how much these guys are on a different level than the rest of us. It might be a Natural Inclination and not at all Intellectualized, but seeing the same thing in two different places leads me to believe that John had spent some time on the drums while he was in the Navy.

I'm an older, amateur jazz pianist, and I've never sat down and just memorized this solo...it's always been this monster lurking just across the hill. I guess it might be time!
