Ron on Requirements
США
Добавлен 22 апр 2021
This channel hosts presentations I've made on system requirements analysis and related systems engineering topics, including architecture and systems engineering measurement. These complement the written papers available through the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE). www.incose.org/publications/papers-presentations-library. More recently there are presentations regarding requirements validation and model-based systems engineering. There are also links to presentations hosted on other RUclips channels. Feel free to post your comments, or connect with me on LinkedIn.
Two Types of Functional Decomposition - Conversation with Brian Moberley - 2024

Differentiating System Architectures: Applying Architecture Measures - 2015 - Ron Carson
Просмотров 7039 месяцев назад
This presentation of a 2015 paper is the last in a series of four papers on systems engineering measurement. This presentation applies architecture measures derived in another work (Carson & Kohl 2013) to one of the intended uses of those measures: to be able to select a preferred architecture. Just of a few of many possible measures were found to be significant for identifying a preferred arch...
Project Managers Guide to SE Measurement - 2015 - Ron Carson
Просмотров 4119 месяцев назад
This third of four presentations on SE Measurement from the 2015 INCOSE Symposium describes the INCOSE Measurement Working Group guide. It recommends several high-leverage measures to help project managers avoid and manage technical debt. The guide is available in the INCOSE Store, with the soft-copy free for INCOSE members.
Correlating Product and Process Measures as a Model for SE Measurement - 2011 - Ron Carson
Просмотров 1269 месяцев назад
This second presentation on SE Measurement from the 2011 INCOSE Symposium describes a strategy for identifying and correlating work product measures with process measures to improve work product quality and process effectiveness. The written paper is in the Wiley-INCOSE library, free for INCOSE members. Viewers interested in receiving the complete Excel spreadsheet of work products and correlat...
Using Performance-Based Earned Value (SM) for Measuring SE Effectiveness - 2008 - Ron Carson
Просмотров 2259 месяцев назад
This presentation of a 2008 paper is the first in a short series on systems engineering measurement, and identifies problems with Earned-Value Management, a correction using Performance-Based Earned Value (SM), and how this relates to defining and measuring systems engineering effectiveness. We define an architectures (or hierarchy) of SE measures and describe two measures related to requirements.
Can Systems Engineering Be Agile? 2013 - Ron Carson
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.10 месяцев назад
This is a presentation of my 2013 INCOSE paper, "Can Systems Engineering Be Agile? Development Lifecycles for Systems, Hardware, and Software". We examine key features of agile principles and development, explain how and when they may be applicable to systems engineering, and discuss some associated risks of "agile SE".
Functional Architecture as the Core of MBSE - 2013 - Ron Carson
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.10 месяцев назад
This presentation from our 2013 INCOSE paper describes the importance of a functional architecture throughout the system lifecycle, and how it can be used as part of model-based systems engineering (MBSE) to improve system development, operations. and maintenance.
Developing Validated Requirements

INCOSE Seattle- Metro Chapter Meeting, 2023 September 27. This was a hybrid meeting, both in-person and on-line. I apologize for the production quality and only displaying the "speaker page", and the audio "echo". Hopefully you may still extract some useful nuggets for your Requirements work.
SRA9 Formalizing Requirements Verification and Validation - 2018 - Ron Carson
Просмотров 5183 года назад
This 29-minute video is a presentation of my ninth paper on system requirements analysis. It was first presented at the 2018 INCOSE Symposium. This paper describes how the requirements characteristics of verifiability, necessity, sufficiency and feasibility can demonstrate the verification and validation of requirements, and prove that a set of requirements is correct and complete. All of these...
SRA8 Implementing Structured Requirements to Improve Requirements Quality - 2015 - Ron Carson
Просмотров 9303 года назад
This 28-minute video is a presentation of my eighth paper on system requirements analysis. It was first presented at the 2015 INCOSE Symposium. This paper describes the Boeing implementation of structured requirements and their associated quality measurements, and how this approach reduces ambiguity and improves verifiability of requirements. All of these papers can be found in the Wiley/INCOSE...
SRA7 Integrating FMEA with SRA - 2004 - Ron Carson
Просмотров 2473 года назад
This 18-minute video is a presentation of my seventh paper on system requirements analysis. It was first presented at the 2004 INCOSE Symposium. This paper applies the earlier concepts of anomaly handling (1995, SRA1) to integrating the failure modes and effects analysis with the system requirements analysis, using the concept of "functional failure". All of these papers can be found in the Wil...
SRA6 Requirements Completeness - Requirements Working Group Report - 2004 - Ron Carson
Просмотров 2633 года назад
This 27-minute video is a presentation of my sixth paper on system requirements analysis. It was first presented at the 2004 INCOSE Symposium and is the report of the INCOSE Requirements Working Group project on this subject. It reprises some earlier work and explores the issue in more detail. All of these papers can be found in the Wiley/INCOSE Symposium library and many are also posted at Res...
SRA5 Keeping the Focus During Requirements Analysis 2001 Ron Carson
Просмотров 1483 года назад
This 31-minute video is the fifth in a series on system requirements analysis. It was first presented at the 2001 INCOSE Symposium. This paper touches on several issues regarding requirements development and how to focus on the important things. This is also the first paper where I introduce a "structured requirement", a concept which is elaborated in subsequent papers. All of these papers can ...
SRA4 Fuzzy Sets as Requirements Antecedents - 2000 - Ron Carson
Просмотров 633 года назад
This 17-minute video is a presentation of my fourth paper on system requirements analysis. It was first presented at the 2000 INCOSE Symposium. This paper attempts to address the parameter space of input conditions using "fuzzy sets", and evaluates the use of this "fuzzy" methodology to requirements development. All of these papers can be found in the Wiley/INCOSE Symposium library and many are...
SRA3 Requirements Completeness: A Deterministic Approach - 1998 - Ron Carson
Просмотров 1743 года назад
This 37-minute video is a presentation of my third paper on system requirements analysis. It was first presented at the 1998 INCOSE Symposium. Along with the prior papers it forms the basis for all my work on "Requirements Completeness" and my emphasis on "structured requirements" in subsequent papers. All of these papers can be found in the Wiley/INCOSE Symposium library and many are also post...

I hope you are well. Visiting your channel I have seen your all videos and content are very good but your video SEO optimization is not professional. Perhaps you are busy for managing the channel.
This was such a beautiful presentation.. thank you Dr. Carson
I have taken many classes from Dr Carson over the years at Boeing and he NEVER failed to get me to think. What seems obvious (requirements) is not when one digs deeper. Bottom line is listen ..and re-listen till you get his points. They are important and need to be understood. The world would be a much better place if people follow Dr Carson's advice.
Richard, Thank you for paying attention in all those classes, and for your kind comments! Best wishes!
Great video. Thank you Dr. Carson!
17:55 - 18:52 🤣 So true re: requirements specs - Started watching this entire series w SRA1. Really appreciate your rolling all of these up and taking the time to explain them in such detail. Very well done. Appreciate all of the work that went into these.
Thanks! I'm glad these are helpful. Feel free to share with your colleagues.
