Something must happen in your DNA when you get to a certain age because, like some other guys I know, I've recently had the urge to get back into a hobby from my childhood - Railway Modelling!
Starting from absolute scratch, these videos are intended to be a record of how things go.
Lot's of mistakes will be made & my solutions to problems are just that "my solutions", it doesn't mean they're the definitive way to do something. After watching many, many videos I've realised that everyone finds their own way, the way that works for them.

A Model Railway From Scratch - 39a: Questions about AnyRail & a/c!
Thanks for watching the last video, this is just a quick & short update in reply to a couple of questions I got asked about the 3D aspect of AnyRail & the type of a/c fitted in the summer house.

It's been over a year since the last update & the Garden Room is now finished & ready for the new layout construction to begin. Hopefully updates will become more regular now & next time I'll be discussing the new layout plan. Thanks for watching!
A Model Railway From Scratch - 37: Starting the Summer House/Garden Room! (Part 1)

So after a few months settling into our new house I decided to start building a new home for a new layout & so in August, I started construction of a Garden Room/Summer House. This video shows the progress so far. I learned a lot from the RUclips channels below, they''re a fantastic resource for building your own Garden Room & they gave me the confidence to have a go at building my own. Ali Dym...

It's been ages since the previous update, I could not believe how long it took before we actually moved house. This video shows the destruction of the old layout & then looks at possible locations for a new layout in our new house. There's also some surprise train action! The loft ladder I bought was the Dolle 'ClickFix Mini' Timber Folding Loft Ladder, it's expenisve but a quality product. Fin...
A Model Railway From Scratch - 35: The Last Run!
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.3 года назад
I'm sorry to say that this Last Run video didn't go according to plan! The intention was to film more than one loco running on the layout for one last time before it's dismantled. Unfortunately, track problems meant I could only run the class 68 Aveneger successfully. I also take a quick look at a great tool for the modeller, the PanaVise 350. It's rather expensive (around £100) but it's a very...
A Model Railway From Scratch - 34: Cab ride using a gimbal
Просмотров 2,8 тыс.4 года назад
This video takes a look at filming a cab ride view with a small camera mounted on a gimbal. This allows the operator to use pan & tilt as the train goes around the track. I use a Feiyu-Tech G4S gimbal, which uses a GoPro as the camera & then take a look at the much smaller DJI Pocket which is a complete self-conatined gimbal mounted camera. A couple of running sessions allows you to compare the...

A Model Railway From Scratch - 32: Sutton's Loco Works Class 24 Experiment
Просмотров 4,7 тыс.4 года назад
Apologies for the long delay since my last video - there's been a lot going on! In this video I take a look at the SLW Class 24 Experiment (97 201), this version has on-board sound & a stay alive capacitor. It's not really a review - I'll leave those to better modellers! It's a superb model in every way and, although rather expensive, I cannot recommended it enough. If you have the time I would...
A Model Railway From Scratch - 31: Fault rectified & Track-Cam!

After a lot of investigation, I found out what was causing my ECoS to constantly short-out. Many many thanks to everyone that offered suggestions - there were some great ideas. The explanation of finding & fixing the problem is very dry, however stick it out or fast forward to about ten minutes to see some track-can footage with a bit of a difference.
A Model Railway From Scratch - 30: 3,000 Subs & Major Problem!

I've just hit an amazing 3,000 subs & I'm so very grateful to everyone who has subscribed, it's quite unbelievable, thank you! I did have something planned but my layout has developed a major problem which has knocked me back - in every sense of the word. I don't know how long it will take to resolve this so I don't know when the next update will be.

It's probably starting to get a bit dull now, but progress is being made! There's a dry introduction discussing the Lenz LK200 reverse loop module before we get to the progress update. Also, a massive mistake - it's a good job this is my first layout - I'll get it right next time! Remember, "measure twice, cut once"!

A Model Railway From Scratch - 10: Track Testing!
I know I'm late to the party. I'm curious as to how that sheeting from screwfix has worked with regard to keeping the cold out and equally (when the sun appears) keeping the loft cooler? Thanks. I'm just contemplating using that foam board which is quite expensive.
It generally worked ok, the trick is fitting it properly, which i didn't always do! It needs to be snugly attached to the sides with a gap on both the front & back for airflow. The loft is probably one of the hardest places to maintain an even temperature & even though i used the foil, it was still very cold in the winter & very hot in the summer. i think if i'd taken more care with the fitting it would have helped reduce this-but only up to a point. Regards, Grant.
@@GrantWilliamsRailway Cheers Grant. I'm moving from the small bedroom into the attic. I did try in the attic 25 years ago but didn't insulate anything so the layout deteriated very quickly. I'm just watching a video of a guy fitting very thick foil to the rafters with staples. Rather than between it's going over the top. Easier to fit no doubt. Just looked on screwfix and it isn't cheap for the very thick stuff. Thanks for replying and good luck with the new location. I'll be watching how you get on.
Just to clarify, if youre using just the foil over the rafters you can put it on flat & then just tape up the joins with foil tape. you only need an air gap on both sides of the foil if you plan to board over the foil, like i did.
@@GrantWilliamsRailway I was looking at foil. So many different grades and they don't really tell you what grade you need. I don't want to go bare minimum as I want it to be a decent environment. More research required I think.
Nice to see a local lad balding a model railway (I live in Fulwell - 54A kind of gives it away) and I work at Sunderland Station Models so if you fancy popping in for a chat sometime I usually work Tues/Wed/Thursdays.
Hi Grant - Great to see you back and looking forward to following the build and also the un boxing !!! Cheers Kev
Hi Grant. Thank you for the tutorial on AnyRail. I can get close to the train driver's eye view, but my inability to excel at shoot-em-up video games means I still cannot achieve my aim. But thanks for trying.
Thanks Grant.
Great to see you back on the scene and building again Grant. I'll be keeping an eye on progress buddy......Andy
Great to see you back mate! 👌
When you mark out the helix sections, I am guessing that they are not true circles, as when they rise up, the ends which are initially matching, will separate and the ends will not exactly butt together. Perhaps your CAD tool allows you to produce a paper template (although a large printer would be required).
You're right but an exact join isn't a problem as long as the joins are braced. I couldn't actually find anywhere that could print a plan big enough within reasonable cost.
Great to see you back and making progress. I kept my subscription active from when you moved, hoping you would eventually return. I enjoyed the first series very much. Where do you find the money - it’s a very expensive hobby.
Thanks Graham. It is indeed very expensive, i worry about younger generations coming through. It's only since middle age that i've had more disposable income to spend on the hobby but we've spent so much on the house move i've got to be a bit more frugal with the railway. regards, Grant.
You mentioned buying stuff from eBay and Curaskill. I don’t know it and a Google search didn’t find anything relevant. Perhaps I’ve misspelled Curaskill. Please clarify. Thanks.
Perhaps Accurascale?
Yes, it's accurascale, it's probbaly my NE accent!
@@GrantWilliamsRailway More likely my hearing! My father’s rels are/were Geordies (Newcastle on). Like the accent/dialect, especially my auntie’s.
Hi Grant, nice to see you at the first stages of the build, I’m looking forward to seeing how it all develops. Life always gets in the way, I’m retired and I still never seem to get enough time to work on the railway!!! Cheers for now Grant, John
Hi Grant - Great to see you back mate. The unit on the wall above the worktop, is it just a heater and is there more of it on the outside of the garden room? Just love what you have done so far. Looking forward to the build after following you on the loft build. Think I might watch that again. I can truly understand how life and work get in the way, but it is after all a hobby and we take out time with hobbies. Regards Chris
Hi Chris, the unit is a heater & a/c unit, it can get very hot in there in summer so i thought it was a worthwhile expense. the compressor part is out the back of the summer house. regards, Grant
Just great to see you posting videos again, brings back some memories. I started a layout two years ago after last having one in the 1970s, and got great enjoyment and inspiration watching your entire loft railway series, more or less all in one go. Looking forward to seeing how the garden summer house series goes.
Thanks Ian, much appreciated.
It’s crazy to see you having to start all over again. It looks good though!
i'm impressed by your energy - first the attic conversion and now the garden room layout. i'm in my 70's and i had half an eye on one of our children's bedrooms but they want their rooms kept as they remember them plus they come back every now and then ha-ha so, in the end, i resorted to n scale as i could move the board when i had to get out of the way without leaving too much evidence of trespassing.
TBH Ian one of the reasons its taken so long to get even this far is because i come in from work & i'm knackered! My two are in their twenties now & still at home, so it was either the loft again or build the summer house!
haha well i'm retired so i haven't any excuse. thanks for reply much appreciated.@@GrantWilliamsRailway
Hi Grant. Both helixes and helices are correct. I have just updated to AnyRail version 6.53.0 and chosen the 3D view. How do you get it to show the train driver's POV moving around the track?
Hi Paul thanks for the comment. To get a drivers POV click the 3D view button then click the FPS camera, its the one that faces out of the screen! The mouse moves the camera left & right & the cursor keys move perspective in & out, so with combinations of both its possible to 'drive' around the track. Hope that helps!
@@GrantWilliamsRailway Hi Grant. Thanks for your reply. I have followed the steps you outlined and do get the image to move around, but not in the way you did to get the driver's POV!
If youre still having no luck i'll see if i can post a short about it at the weekend
@@GrantWilliamsRailway Thanks, Grant. Much appreciated.
Hi Grant, Nice update, good to see you making some progress. Track plan looks pretty good. Quick question, have you ever thought about running the helix in the other direction? So on the scenic section it'd run upto that far wall. Yes you would lose a little bit of storage sidings but you'd gain like 3-4ft of scenic section and open up the entrance to the station on that right hand side and you could always model a village/town scene on abit of light insulation board to sit over the top of the helix as something else to model which would be light and easy to remove. Cheers, Michael
Hi Michael, thanks for the comment. I did actually want to run it that way, however this would mean trains running up to the station would be on the inside of the helix so they'd have a greater gradient added to the extra friction of a tighter radius. As i can't remember the difference in gradient between the two plans I may revisit this before i move any further - just to remind myself what it was. I mostly run modern image & i know they're much more effective than steam on gradients so it may not be too bad! Decisions, decisions!! Regards, Grant.
Any update Grant? No pressure honest!
hah-ha, its a legitimate question! i have been doing stuff, just very slowly, i've got some video that needs editing so hopefully i'll get that up soon. regards, Grant
Wow! Fantastic space going to be amazing once you are up and running.
It takes a lot of work to dismantle a layout then move, I did the same thing last year, now I am building a new layout, good luck on the new layout, lots of fun
Hi Grant just subscribed to your channel
Hi, I am 6 years late to this video but at this point it was looking great and what a layout. I will catch up now on the build to present day.
Wow what a great start. Just come across your video as I am at the same point (almost). I had a Velux window fitted but now I am thinking that two might be better one on each side of the pitched roof. As you say they do make such a difference. I am returning after 40+ years away from the craft so gathering as much info as I can as soooooooo many changes since my day, static grass! for one. Will trawl through your build videos now.
Thanks for watching! There's been quite a few changes in the years since i started doing videos!
Find a busted headphone in a junk store and use the wire from it. It’s really fine.
Great idea, cheers!
Been checking in for ages hoping to see an update, looking forward to the build
One question - when you are recording and viewing on the phone like at 12:30 - is it recording to the phone via wireless and storing there or onto an SD card in the DJI Pocket? Kind Regards Matthew
Hi Matthew, the phone is just a monitor, the video goes on to a micro SD card in the Pocket. Regards Grant
Wow that turned out great! Looking forward to more updates now that you are pickup up the pace again.
Hi Grant, really nice garden room, looking forward to seeing what you have planned, cheers for now, John
It's so good to have you back Grant. What a great hobby room. Looking forward to seeing you fill it with track!
What a fantastic job you have done, looks really smart and clean, perfect spot for a layout.
Hi Grant. It's looking fantastic. You seem to have covered all the bases in terms of sufficient wall outlets, Internet access, insulation and air conditioning (does it warm the air, too?). Oh dear; did I see a crack in the left hand pane of the centre window? It sounds as though you are going to be tweaking (or totally revising) your track plan - exciting!
Thanks Paul. The window isn't cracked, could it be a shadow or trick of the light?
@@GrantWilliamsRailway Good to hear.
Hi Grant. It's looking good. Was it a kit, or did you just buy the basic materials?
Ah, are you using V.5.72 perhaps?
Nice to see the new railway room. I have always wanted a garden room like that, much more comfortable than a loft! Still, we have to work with what we have got. Cheers
Hi Grant. How did you get version 7.2 of AnyRail? I have just checked for updates and have now got 6.50.2, which their website says is the latest version! Are you using a Mac whose version numbers are different to those for Windows?
Hi Grant fabulous railway room and you can watch the real trains as well. Looking forward to seeing it progress atb Andy
Hi Grant. The usual answer to questions of this nature (when it is a matter of opinion) is that you usually already "know" the answer. As you have already pointed out, HO is a smaller scale. As you know, the problem lies in having HO and OO scale items in close proximity to each other on the layout where the difference stands out like the proverbial sore thumb. My personal advice is to stick with OO and only venture into HO if there really is no alternative. I too have obtained digital versions of the model instructions - but more commonly by downloading them from the manufacturer's website (where available). Sundela: it's no good people saying you shouldn't have used it - it's too late now. Just deal with the problems as best you can.
I remember you doing the base and looking at the trains running behind nice to have you back plan’s sounds good cheers Al
Hi Grant. A very useful video. Thanks for the heads-up on the cordless light. You mentioned that you had two copies of AnyRail running; did you just use Windows to display them one on top of the other? I too looked at advice on YT and replaced my purchase of 7/0.2 wire for the droppers for 16/0.2.
Hi Paul. It's possible to run more than one instance of AnyRail & i just stacked the windows. Grant
Looking good
Hi Grant Great to see you back and I love the Railway room it really looks good. Looking forward to following the build. Cheers Kev
Really good to have you back. Love the garden room - it looks superb! Can’t wait to see your plans.
Looking good grant. I built my railway 4 foot high, like cheekytek did. This means there is a whole living area co existing underneath. Sofa, desk, log burner, workbench. Of course my boards aren't too wide where I don't need it to allow this to work. Double using space is good.
Hi Grant, good to see you back on the tube. That's a mighty fine shed you've built there, very nice. Plenty of room for a new layout. I was planning something similar but unfortunately it's stalled due to shed roof damage. Keep us updated on the progress !! All the best........Andy
Great too see you back buddy! Can’t wait to see the progress this year 👍🏻
Welcome back. Great to see the progress on the Summer House
good to see you and a super job done there
i'm well jealous but the wallet must have taken a proper battering!
It ended up being quite eye-watering tbh. i'd planned & costed it before the pandemic but by the time it came to build it, material costs had gone through the roof.
@@GrantWilliamsRailway tell me about it, even roofing lats went up to 3 times the pre scammdemic price!
Great to see you back in operation again. Looking forward to seeing the plans and development.
A very nice (great) Summerhouse/Garden Room and an interesting project. I shall keep a lookout fot the layout design and the build. Regards Michael
You could always get a tint that that you can see out but can't see in
