    Great Job putting this together! It was a huge help! I watched it 10 times at least during the rebuilding process of my HBW 100. Like you, I'm pretty sure the reason it slipped was due to the thrust washers being worn. Clutches seemed ok but replaced all of them. The shims 53,54,55,56 were all on the reverse side of the shifting actuator. None on the FWD side. It has been worked on before, so I don't trust they are in the right place. Just getting ready to press it all back together.

      Hope the rebuild went well. I just pulled my unit out again and I think I will be replacing the forward thrust washer again? I have a second transmission as well that I will rebuild and keep as a spare. Good luck

    Great video. please could I make a question?. I replaced the inboard diesel engine of my sailboat for one That has a ZF gearbox 2x1, an old model from late 80´s, but a kept the same propeller wich is left handed and now when I move the control forward the boat goes backwards so if I want to go forward I have to move the control to reverse, and somebody told me that I should change the propeller because that gearbox was made for rigth handed propeller and I could not use like this because the gears of the reverse are weaker than the ones that goes forward. So what I see in your video is that they are exactly the same and I should only change the position of the cable on the control system. Does the zf gearbox for inboard engines works like this one? Am I right or I should replace the propeller? I will be greatful to hear an answer from you.

    • @moltzvt
      @moltzvt 5 лет назад

      Jose, I am not an expert but I do recall looking into the cooler that can be bolted on the side of the transmission. I was told you only need the cooler if the transmission is run in the reverse mode all the time as you say. there is an idle gear on that side that allows reverse and this would add heat. For shore duration runs I think you would be OK. Might be easier to change the prop as you mention. Do be sure to change the dampening plate, i do believe this causes transmission issues when it fails. Hope this helps.

      @MichaelDorgan0 5 лет назад

      the reverse gear on the ZF gear box is much different and is operated by a chain

    Great video, this has me wondering why the 2 bronze trust washer had so much wear ?

    • @moltzvt
      @moltzvt 5 лет назад

      A diesel engine like the Perkins 4-108 has an uneven thrust curve when at idle or low RPM. In other words, each time it fires the rotation jumps or increases slightly. I have seen problems in large diesel engines as well that are allowed to idle too much. The dampening plate mounted between the engine and transmission smooths out the thrust. When the dampening plate gets old the peaks in thrust are transferred to the transmission, the thrust washer, even when in gear, slips a fraction to dampen the torque. Every time it slips the washer begins to wear until failure.

    You would not have the dimensions of the thrust washers by any chance? The box I am rebuilding, although said to be working, has no thrust washers, only shim washers. I can order from the USA but given transport costs and insecurity through African mail would rather make bronze washers myself. If I can find the dimensions.

    Thank you for the video. I replaced my Hurth HBW100 transmission with a new PRM120, which is 1 1/2" longer than the Hurth and so forced me to move the engine forward by 1" (on my Catalina 36). So I now have a Hurth core that I need to figure out what to do with.

    Thanks for the videos, gave me confidence to rebuild my HBW-10. One question, the drawing that I'm using shows two sets of shims 53,54,55,56. Upon disassembly, I only have 3 shims on the forward gear side of the gearset and absolutely none on the reverse gear side. I've dry fitted the gears into the two housings and everything works. Just curious if the shims and number of shims are variable based on differences in the parts dimensions. Wondering if I ought to disassemble it (again) and add the same number to the side that is missing them? Once again thanks for the videos. Btw, it's been a year now, do you have any post scripts? Best regards, Scott

    • @moltzvt
      @moltzvt 6 лет назад

      Sorry for the late reply, as you likely have figured it out that the shims are just for bearing end play and if there were none the end play was correct without.

    Hi - the nut holding on the output flange requires a special tool - this costs a lot. I used a BMX Freewheel Removal tool which cost me £5. The nut was very tight and required an impact driver to undo. The clutch friction and driven plates, thrust bearings and seals for the Hurth HRB10 fit the Kanzaki KBW10. The Kanzaki is the gearbox I worked on (to fix slipping clutch on forward drive), My parts came from ASAP -Supplies. The main difference between the Kanzaki and Hurth gearboxes is that the case doesn't split on the Kanzaki. I also had to replace the output shaft taper bearings which were just standard bearings available from bearing suppliers. You need a puller with a good reach and I used a press to get it all back together. boatinfo.no/lib/gear/manuals/hurth-5-10-20.html explains the Hurth - I never found a Kanzaki manual (but didn't look very hard).

      From the manuals that I have the HBW 100 is equal to the ZF-10 M and is lighter duty than the HBW-10 which is equal to the ZF-12 M. Both are covered in the same Hurth/ZF Service Manual.
