Changing forests and the bird species living within them | Rachel Kuzmich
Three-dimensional habitat structure provides the resources necessary for many birds to meet their life history and behavioural needs. Forest are dynamic environments, experiencing disturbances, subject to biological invasions, influenced by climate change, undergoing succession, and subject to other natural and anthropogenic changes. This study examines the effect of forest succession, i.e., the directional change in tree species composition and three-dimensional structure over time, on bird distributions. Of particular interest are Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita) and Willow warbler (Phylloscopus trochilus), two breeding habitat specialists preferring mature forest and early successio...

The genetic basis of sex determination in Catostomus fishes | Cassandre Pyne
Просмотров 2713 года назад
Cassandre Pyne*, Elizabeth Mandeville ABSTRACT: Gonochorism, or the existence of separate sexes, is common among eukaryotic organisms. Yet, the underlying mechanisms of sex determination are poorly understood and highly variable. Sex determination systems that cause a skewed sex ratio or differ across closely related taxa may eventually lead to reproductive isolation. In hybridizing species, se...

Full Title Impacts of hybridization on native crabapple (Malus coronaria) by domestic apple (Malus domestica) in southern Ontario Abstract Introduced species, including those domesticated for food production, can have diverse impacts on native biological diversity.  For example, through hybridization, domesticated species can have negative genetic and demographic effects on native congeners and...
Hybridization varies geographically in Abronia umbellata (Nyctaginaceae) | Alyson Van Natto
Просмотров 643 года назад
A long-standing goal in evolutionary ecology is determining the sources of genetic variation required for adaptation in natural populations. One source of genetic variation may be through hybridization, but very few studies have quantified the impact of hybridization across a species range. Abronia umbellata is a coastal dune endemic that ranges from San Quintin, Baja California, Mexico to Coos...

Hemolymph viscosity affects spider joint motion during vibration perception | Anastassia Mena
Просмотров 1793 года назад
Does hemolymph viscosity affect spider joint motion during vibration perception? Ectothermic animals cannot regulate their body temperature; they are subject to physiological changes with variations in external temperature. In the case of spiders, changes in temperature affect their leg kinematics, presumably through changes in hemolymph viscosity. However, spiders also use their legs to percei...

Is limiting similarity more evident for positively co-occurring plant species? | Kelly Balfour
Просмотров 3353 года назад
Despite general acceptance of classical niche theory, few analyses of field data have produced evidence of limiting similarity, which postulates that resource restrictions limit niche overlap between coexisting plant species. Traditional assessments of species coexistence typically substitute with co-occurrence data representing snapshots of community composition. However, these data do not acc...
Impacts of Wastewater on Benthic Macroinvertebrates in Summer vs Winter | Chelsea Aristone

An example of how the Science community cannot provide leadership on this issue. Soil will respond to the 5 basic requirements of Regen Ag (No till, leave armour, biodiversity, always a living root, animal impact) in a lot less than 10 years. False goals like 'how much Arbuscular Mycorrhizae' do I have merely confuses the issue. For the committed and informed farmer the use of compost and all of its derivatives will speed up the process to a matter of months. Furthermore Science cannot forecast outcomes in a non-clinical environment because Nature is a variable beast (how much rain, how quickly, wind, clouds, pests?: see Roger Savory). Interesting talk though, a reminder of Nature's plan.

Thanks for telling us what we already know. Modern farming techniques are abusive on the soil, doused with toxic chemicals and chemically blocked from over fertilization. They technique is for high yielding profits thats all. We know that healthy soil equals healthy plants.

I think you are confusing two different species when you mention the cleaner wrasse taking a bite from its intended client. Cleaner Wrasse DO NOT do this. There is a species of blenny called Aspidontus taeniatus that mimics the cleaner wrasse in appearance and behavior in order to lure potential prey towards it so that it can bite it and run off with its meal. Any biting interactions like the ones you described can be solely attributed to the blenny and not the cleaner wrasse. This information was provided to me from Dr. Brian Sidlauskas at Oregon State University when I attended his Systematics of Fishes class in winter term 2022.

Awesome video, i inoculated charcoal(biochar) with worm castings which are rich in certain fungi and charcoal has an average of 1000 square m2 of surface area per gram(!) which is a huge area for fungus to colonize. My plants were incredible and the one house plant that i planted in the same soil had an average of 5+ flowers all year round compared to 2 maybe 3 flowers every couple of months, its leaves were much thinner and more abundant and it was very healthy.

I dont know for sure what the reason is but i do know that claroideoglomus is commercially available and they are more disturbance resistant like mentioned. Simply driving over the field can already introduce them. But this is just speculation

Super cool talk c: I love the videos of the chickens! I have a question: did the one-way doors between the treatment and home pens affect the chickens' ability to enter/exit the pens? Essentially, did it take time for the birds to understand which of the one-way doors allows them to access the other pen and could that in turn affect the number of times they visited other pens?

Hey Valerie! Really cool talk :) Do you think the chicks would work harder to access fresh wood shavings of a smaller grain size then? Or are soiled wood shavings more comforting because of the smells of conspecifics? And does motivation for different types of litter change with life stage (i.e. are adults more motivated to dustbathe, etc. than chicks?)
