23rd Year Anniversary Hike Santa Fe, Pecos Wilderness
We headed to Santa Fe for the weekend for our 23rd year Anniversary.
We hiked a few peaks in Pecos Wilderness. We were attempting a 12 mile loop, but too much late summer snow made us turn around half way and head back. We have done the hike before, but we couldn't find the trail in tree cover because of snow. Still an awesome day with my beautiful wife!

In July 2024 my best friend Geoff and I headed out to do the Crestone Peak via Cottonwood Trail. a lot of waterfalls the whole hike, a ton of vert for the whole route maybe 9 miles from trail head to summit. Straight forward 3rd class climbing for 2 thousand feet up the red gully to the notch.

A beautiful fall day on Sandia Mountain. This video is in memory of our Nellie girl. Our last fall hike with Nellie. Unexpectedly 2 months later we would have to put Nellie down on Dec 22nd because of Cancer. It was devastating for the family. Nellie had a great life up in the mountains, and with Bunker. She was a sweet sweet girl.

    I really enjoyed you south mountian video. I too summited south mountian solo a few years ago. I drove my car into Cedar Grove as far as I could heading west. Parked car and bushwacked through lots of scrub. I went straight up the scree field on the south facing side. Just went straight up. Sorta siege tactics. Very dangerous, esp being alone. Got to the summit. Very uneventful at top. All chest high thorn bushes. Started to snow so I got down as fast as I could. Tough hike but glad I am one of the few people to bag that summit. Awesome video you did! Thanks!

      Thanks, Cool. The Zapata trailhead is less traveled then Lake Como rd. I had the lake at base of climb all to myself for 2 days. I did it in September. Once you summit Ellingwood, you do have the choice to do 3rd class traverse to Blanca. That definitely would make for a full day. I didn't do that because i was solo. Ellingwood is a good climb and a nice 3rd class slightly exposed move towards the top.

Ellingwood Cerstones I was surprised how much bigger they were then Wheeler. Really beautiful mountains and great day hiking to the Alpine lake for camping. Definitely put on your list if you haven't been there. I recommend the Zapata trail Head instead of Lake Como. A lot less people.

      That is the only part of Truchas I haven't done. It started to storm close to South Truchas when I was up there and I had to get down quick. I wasn't able to hit middle, so kinda bummed since its no short trek any way to Middle. I think from Trampas it would still be 25 RT. Maybe next season I'll spend a night and do it, and hit Sheepshead since I missed that too. North Truchas from Trampas the head wall is definitely a challenge. I don't recommend the class 3 rt on South crazy loose rock , I'd do the 4th class up front face. But still a lot of choss, and sketchy holds.

      Thanks, I appreciate. Definitely put Lindsey on the to do list. The only down side is you have to drive around the backside of Sangre mountain range to get to trail head. So it's about 85 miles farther then doing Blanca or Ellingwood peak from the front of range. But Huerfano valley is outrageously beautiful and you camp at the base of Blanca/Ellingwood on the backside.

      There is another another hike that I even like better. It is the hike to Trampas Lakes. Its not too far from Taos and outside of the town of Truchas, and I guess the area called Trampas. Good day out and back hike. Ive done it about 5 times. From Trail Head it's a 5 mile 3k vert hike on good trail to Alpine lake. From lake there is a route to ridge line. Once one ridge line to the right is Sheep's head Peak, To the left is No Name and N. Truchas. If you check out my video on Trampas backpack or the video N. Truchas Traverse they will show you how to access ridge line from lake. Another long route to Truchas peaks can be accessed Via Santa Barbara Camp ground close to Taos, but that is 12 miles each way. Better to Backpack that one.

      Thanks! I was so blown away by this canyon. I kind of kept it not detailed for a reason. You can still have solitude in the Canyon. That is hard to come by in today's social media frenzy. But to get to Sowats Point 45 miles on the Forest 4wd roads will keep most away. Dropping into Kwagunt canyon, a lot of scrambling over spillways, and rock hopping will eliminate a lot of others. Its amazing, time of year is important. Spring and Fall for sure.

    • @chasingtrailproductions3689
      @chasingtrailproductions3689 3 года назад

      Great, thanks for watching. Yeah, La luz is definitely a good hike for prep and one of my favorites. I'm doing it this Saturday morning, but start La Luz really early like 6am because of heat. The other hikes that would be good are TWA Crash site is really good prep hike and good elevation and 8 miles RT, The 3 gun spring to Embudito to South Crest Peak thats a 10 miler. I did that a few times recently. The Wheeler Peak really is nice and not difficult , start if you can about 730 and get up top before people, and usually can be windy later in day. I have a lot of other videos on these hikes I just haven't posted yet. Let me know if you need specifics. I just got back from a 50 miler in the Grand canyon, best hike ever. And I only saw a couple people in 5 days and Ive been editing video. But i'm going to be a little vague on this GC route since not many people know about it, thus its not crowded!

      @BruthaVIII 3 года назад

      @@chasingtrailproductions3689 Thanks for the feedback/advice! I've done La Luz 2x (up and down) and 1x just up. For some reason, I thought that WP was going to be more difficult than LL (when you factor out the elevation), so maybe it won't be as difficult as I thought that it would be. I'm going to do Piedra Lisa South 2x in a row this week because I find it to be more strenuous than LL (even though it's a little over 2 miles each way, it's still a good climb). I did the Grand Canyon about 6 years ago. We went to Havasu Falls and it was outstanding. I would definitely do it again. If you don't mind sharing (at least privately), I would like to know more about your GC hike. I'll message you so you have my information. I've done Half Dome 2x and would like to do that again, but now they have permits and I hear it's difficult to draw them. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and experience.

    • @chasingtrailproductions3689
      @chasingtrailproductions3689 3 года назад

      @@BruthaVIII Yea LL is harder and if you have done it up and down you will have an easy day. I think if you do Bull of the woods trail its a lot longer for sure, but if you do Williams lake TH its only 4.5 to top. I would recommend after summit WP doing Simpson Peak Ridge line traverse its a Cat 3 scramble if you are interested in that stuff. I would also suggest doing Trampas Lake to Sheeps head Peak or ridgline to N. Truchas Peak, that's an awesome one.

    • @BruthaVIII

I am most definitely going to do Trampas Lake to Truchas on a subsequent trip! Your video on that hike was awesome. I may even bring my fly rod and do some fishing up there.

      @@chasingtrailproductions3689 Yes, it can be confusing as you start the hike in the Carson National forest, but then cross into the Pecos wilderness after a couple of miles. The best way to see the boundaries of the Pecos wilderness is to buy the National Geographic map (you can get it at REI or Amazon). Its a great resource for all the trails as well as the boundary information. The Pecos is divided between the Carson and Santa Fe National forests and each can have their own fire restrictions also so its good to see that hard line on a map to be safe. Not only was the swim course long but the water temp was in the 50s which led to several people being pulled from the water and hospitalized due to severe hypothermia. Also a boat full of Press was following along the swim while spewing fuel into the water. I remember it well. I rode by Perry just seconds after he crashed. It was tough to see. I rode with a woman for a bit that was crying and tried to console her. Condolences to your family.

      I am so sorry for your loss Patty. I have never forgotten that name. I was working the race in 2001 after competing in 2000.

    I was there for this event. Thank you for posting. I was covering it for the military so I didn't really know what happened in the overall. It was cool to see this from this perspective.
