While I appreciate the instruction being provided here, you start-out on an A chord? I realize that there is in-fact an A chord played in the second stanza, and elsewhere, but doesn't the first verse of the song actually start-out with Am to C, then G to D, then Am again? Perhaps I'm wrong.
Excellent point. It seems either the minor or major applies. As to the actual recording you may be right. But live I use majors in all the verses. It makes the Am in the instrumental section hit way harder.
Thanks for the lesson mate..this is definitely a tough one to get to speed I pick A-B-G-E-D-B-G-E in a rolling pattern highlighting the A and d as the bass notes if you watch he’s live version such a skillfull fingerpicker

I've never heard Redgum play it this way, was it a live performance? Chord progression sounds right, the fingerpicking doesn't sound quite there but close.
They definitely pick the high "e" string on every version I've ever heard. It's quite noticable. Try picking the Bass note on6, 5 or 4 as per chord & 3,2,1,2. Could be wrong but sounds more like it to me.
