Flight To Neverland - Hook (Sibelius Ultimate, NotePerformer 4.5 NPPE & Cinematic Rooms)
This is a software performance and not a studio recording. No DAW software involved in its creation. Just Sibelius Ultimate and NotePerformer 4.5 with the new NPPE Engine running a layered mix of Spitfire Audio BBCSO Professional, Spitfire Symphony Orchestra 2024 and Cinematic Studio Series.
This is straight from printed score, typeset by hand into Sibelius Ultimate and audio playback with NotePerformer 4.5. In order to be able to fully test NotePerformer’s AI engine, I’ve tried to maintain all dynamics and articulation exactly as it appears in the score. In only a few cases have I adjusted an articulation or dynamic to achieve a more [objectively] musical performance.

    Noteperformer has been my best purchase of anything music related... I would say the NP Piano is "ok" and the strings could also be better but it's still amazing software and very cheap. I'm looking forward to future releases. I've used DAWs and VSTs which are great but so laborious. I might eventually try the NPPE engine. Thanks for sharing.

      Thanks for listening. I do them manually mostly. The one time I did a render using some musicxml I found online (a movement from a Rachmaninov Symphony), I was caught out by lots of problems with wrong notes that I failed to spot... so back to doing them myself by hand. You can find a lot of good quality musicxml on musescore.com though. Can be a little messy importing them into a notation program though.

    But how did you use Altiverb with Sibelius and Noteperformer? Only way I know is to set Noteperformer's reverb setting to 'dry', and then export the Noteperformer stems to a DAW, and apply Altiverb to them in the DAW. And it sounds like that's what you did, along with further production using your DAW.

    • @leslieq
      @leslieq 6 месяцев назад

      It is worth clarifying that this render was done with an older version of NotePerformer (version 3.3.2) so BEFORE the latest NotePerformer Performance Engine (NPPE) that comes bundled with NotePerformer 4.*. With 3.3.2, there is no such "dry" setting in NotePerformer. Sibelius however, does have a dry setting in Playback performance settings; and I set the mixer reverb sliders all to 0%. No DAW was used at all. In Sibelius' mixer, you can load external reverb/effects plugins directly into Sibelius. That is how I loaded Altiverb to apply reverb and was able to export the full track straight from Sibelius - no stems required. I have since updated to set up to use the latest NotePerformer 4.4 with NPPE. Here is the same piece rendered using Spitfire's BBCSymphony Orchestra: drive.google.com/file/d/1_c0Yy1nVBTVCGF8zfCp3KM0IGifIq4In/view?usp=sharing - exactly the same process as before except, yes now in NPPE I have reverb set to off and instead of Altiverb, now using Cinematic Rooms for reverb. No stems. Just export directly from Sibelius.

    Hmm--it honestly sounds to me like listening from under a pillow with these NP4+NPPE videos. I am quite disappointed with the direction they took NotePerformer--its stock sounds sound so much better than this! They had a good thing going that was technically better than what everyone else is doing, just needing improved upon to take it to the next level. And what did they do? They abandoned what made them special and tried to bolt everybody else's crappy sounds onto their playback engine, and now we have this muddy mess with all kinds of articulation, balance, consistency, and severe EQ issues that the original NotePerformer never had. The problem is most of the popular sample libraries are optimized/designed specifically for movie music and fail miserably at anything else.

    • @leslieq
      @leslieq 9 месяцев назад

      Lol, I wouldn’t right off the NP tech based on my mockups. I know mixing and EQ is a huge part of the process - something I am definitely not particularly skilled at 🤷‍♂️

    • @eriong.7446
      @eriong.7446 6 месяцев назад

      You can still use their built in samples and don’t even have to pay for nppe to do so, but while they are more consistent, that’s true, they sound a lot more like an old synth than some of the better nppe stuff. I don’t know how they could have improved that besides creating their own large orchestral library, but then the base product would cost a lot-lot more (I’d guess closer to a 1000 bucks than to 500) and people would complain that it wasn’t the original direction. I don’t know them, so I can’t speak for them, but to me it seems they realized they can’t do magic with a simple less than 1 GB sample base, and making that better is a very expensive undertaking, so they decided to use what’s already there and done more professionally. I do hope their NPPE will catch up with the consistency and dynamics of the playback based on their own samples, but even now I think they made the right choice.

    Wow, it sounds so natural! Just curious, how had you been working on tempo changes for it?

    • @leslieq
      @leslieq Год назад

      Sorry for the slow response 🙏 Sibelius has a number of ways of affecting playback. Obviously you can add tempo text, metronome marks and performance directions for a musician. But for software to playback in a more natural way, you need to add more detail - recreating the type of rubato a real musician might do. You can use the following techniques to add more playback detail to your score but hiding them from printing so as to not clutter the printed out score. The first is using CMD+Shift+H to Hide/Unhide an object. E.g. if you want to affect playback with a slight rallentando at a cadence (that a real musician might do naturally - but you don’t want to necessarily have to write it in your score), you can choose Rallentando from the Lines menu and place it where you want. Than CMD+Shift+H to hide it from view - but it will still play back. These techniques work with a number of things, not just tempo related. You can do it with dynamics, notes, lines, playing techniques etc.
 The second technique is to use “~” (tilda) symbol before in text objects. This works best for expression marks and dynamics. For example, if you want to force legato on a passage that you want to be played moderately loud, you can use “mf~legato” where ONLY “mf” will be visible in your score, but the playback engine will obey the “legato” marking. The third, most advanced way to do tempo is using Sibelius’ Record Live Tempo. It basically allows you to tap out the tempo for your piece / passage (and even tap out sub-divisions of bars for more refined performance) using a midi keyboard or Spacebar on your keyboard. There are a few video tutorials of this technique floating around RUclips. (I didn’t use live tempo on this mockup, but it is something I’d definitely like to try with something like a concerto).

      Hey, it should be quite simple to add maracas without any issues. 1) With your score open, launch the Add or Remove Instrument panel (keyboard shortcut: i ) 2) Type in "Maracas" in the Find field; Choose from All Instruments You will see all maracas options listed (example here: drive.google.com/file/d/19ksCzDmLrP4DJ4P7OTZT0Iw59A8Nr-78/view?usp=sharing) If you want to add maracas to a "Drum Set" instrument, you will need to Edit the instrument and add a custom note-head in the "Edit Staff Type..." options. I did just try that for myself and whilst you can do the process and select Maracas as the sound, there seems to be a bug that results in the incorrect sound being played. Out of curiosity, I did the edit instrument process with a generic "Percussion 5 lines" stave.. adding maracas works just fine here and plays the correct sound.

    Amazing! How important is the Altiverb for the sound? Im thinking of buying only sibelius and noteperformer because Altiverb is pretty expensiev, but im afraid that i wouldnt sound as good as this without Altiverb.

    • @leslieq
      @leslieq 2 года назад

      I won’t lie, AltiVerb does take it to a new level but I don’t think it is necessary to obtain great results. First off, I recommend just using the default settings once you have Sibelius/NP installed - the out of the box sound is pretty pleasing in itself. Then experiment with the different Sibelius playback settings (dry, ambient etc) in combination with the mixer settings for the amount of reverb on each instrument fader. If by chance, you have a DAW installed (E.g. Logic), it is possible to load the reverb plugins directly into Sibelius for use with your score playback.

    • @leslieq
      @leslieq 2 года назад

      So out of curiosity, I went back and exported this score with only Sibelius/NotePerformer playback. I think the result is still pretty good. Check it out here: drive.google.com/file/d/1fYZ7Hf3_mDuVLWWezdIvloEftFwXuq_m/view?usp=sharing Sibelius Play > Performance Settings: • Espressive: Senza Expressivo • Use Espressivo 2: OFF • Rubato: Senza Rubato • Rhythmic feel: Straight • Use Reverb: ON (Concert Hall) • Mixer Faders scale note velocity as well as volume: CHECKED Sibelius Mixer (M) Settings: • for each instrument track, reverb amount set to 32% Voila! I did this quickly as a test, but I'm sure you can improve on the sound output with additional refinement. You definitely don't need to be buying AltiVerb to have a great time with this software.

    Hi ! Which reverb do you use in altiverb and do you cut all the reverb of sibelius and noteperformer ?

    • @leslieq
      @leslieq 2 года назад

      I use Mechanics Hall reverb in Altiverb as the starting point; and have all Sibelius mixers set to 0% and Dry mix.

    This tool is amazing... It's a relief to finally be able to quickly get a decent mock-up, even on such complex pieces, without spending hours fiddling with more evolved libraries. You have probably already heard NotePerformer's rendition of the Rite of Spring (ruclips.net/video/-m76cWER3C8/видео.html) ? Really a blessed time to be a composer !

    Congratulations, awesome work on programming. That is one of the best scores from J. Williams, I’ve been trying to learn from “The Mothership” and it’s impressive, I found pure magic when they get that old Pinocchio theme in a sense of a journey that goes beyond the movie
