Remembrances of George Champion
This video is about George Champion who was a nearly lifelong resident of South Park and one of the last railroaders in Como. He began working as a machinist apprentice in the Como roundhouse and worked on the Colorado and Southern Railroad in the early 1900s including operating a rotary snowplow through the Alpine tunnel in 1910.

The Story of The Como Project

Chuck and Kathy Brantigan bought the Denver, South Park & Pacific's Como roundhouse in 2002 to preserve it. In 2016 they started the South Park Rail Society and acquired a 1912 Baldwin Prairie type steam locomotive "Klondike Kate." She was built for the Klondike railroad in Canada and also operated on the White Pass & Yukon railroad out of Skagway, AK. Many volunteers have helped with restoring...

I only wish I could have given you all ,three thumbs up. DocBC
You do lovely work for a great cause James. Three huzzahs for you (and a tiger)
Some good people.
Looking forward to seeing the Como Project thrive!
I have one of the original 1870 Denver South Park & Pacific railroad spike from como Colorado the dsp&p 2-6-0s passed over them
Great band!
I’m just waiting for the great continental shift so I can visit. Love what you are doing. Best wishes from Australia .
When we visited Australia in 1996 we rode the Puffing Billy railroad. The locomotive was also a Baldwin!😀
Outstanding!
When I grow up I can only hope to be half as cool as Chuck and Kathy are. The Como complex is a really, really special place.
Just beautiful! :)
Thank you! 😊
Keep up the amazing work! My wife and I own a home in Pitkin and the street we live on is the old railroad grade. The Pitkin Depot is currently for sale but way out of our price range. I've always envisioned it being open to the public but it is a private residence. Anyway, love your work and a huge DSP&P RR fan and we will stop by Como this summer. ❤🚂
@@rockymountianelkwoods4571 Yes, I had seen the real estate listing for the Pitkin depot. It looked lovingly restored - my cameras and I would like to visit it! ;-)
Will your tracks meet up with and or connect with the Rio Grande Railroad in South Fork?
Currently all of our track plans are for just in Park County. We are getting about another mile of rail from Dolores and will have in on-site this year.
I hope to get Thier some day
Has Klondike Kate been repaired ?
Our steam locomotive is receiving a comprehensive rebuild and will be back in service the summer of 2025. (There is a very remote chance of 2024.)
@@denversouthparkpacifichistoric I helped spin Klondike Kate on the Armstrong turntable.
Thanks for sharing this! I always love visiting the Jefferson depot, but besides getting inside part of it back when it was an ice cream shop I've never seen much of the inside. It was great to see the interior in this video. The owners have done a great job. I meant him in the fall of 2022 when they were working on it. He also plans on turning the BN caboose into an Airbnb as well.
😎 , how's the engine coming on ?
Our locomotive will be back in service in 2025 (with a remote possibility of 2024.)
Awesome restoration
Nice video James! We’ll done.
Well done! I never tire of seeing so much progress at Como. So great to see so many people enjoying it too!
Wait a minute *RIO GRANDE HAS ENTERED THE SOUTH PARK LINE*
DRGW had the DSP run their stock cars to Denver because it was a shorter route than going through Pueblo.
@@denversouthparkpacifichistoric it’s a classic grande move
Thats on my bucket list
Good project. Lived in Colorado for years until cost of living drove me out. Retirement sometimes couldn’t keep me afloat financially there. Keep up with the work! Some of us are there with you folks if not physically.
Great railroad history and scenery at Boreas Pass. Have hiked in he area a number of time. Need to return and examine the progress being made at Como. Thanks.
On to Boreas Pass!
I wonder if the reason why the Rocky Mountain Railroad Historical Society asked you to build the track is because they want to revive the lost train business in Calhan. I’d also be surprised if the reason why that Ex. D&RGW flatbed is going to Como is because the car is a Narrow Gauge car, not a Standard Gauge car.
The track will be used for additional artifacts, including a small industrial switcher. The DRGW flatcar is 3' gauge - same as the Denver South Park & Pacific rolling stock at Como, Colorado
We are hoping to lay a quarter of mile of track over the original Main going east. We have obtained on a trade an original CRI&P semaphore. and are trying to get a GE 50-ton engine or a Witcomb 50 tonner which is what the Rock did use. The car went to Como as we were going to put a 3 rail operation like at Alamosa but that is kind of silly when our friends at Como can use it in a better way than we can. Great work by the Como people. THE PREMEIR OPERATION IN THE STATE!
I have crocheted 3 trains for sale. Locomotive, box cars; Como spelled out.
I am modeling my train layout after you guys
Congratulations
I missed your July open roundhouse by just a few days as we stopped by a few days prior. Took a bunch of pictures through the fence and drove over the pass to Breckenridge. Hope to get there again in a few years when you are open. Everything is looking really good!
Thanks! Here is a video from up on Boreas Pass: ruclips.net/video/-hUvkLW3RTA/видео.html
Great video James! Looking forward to seeing you again soon.
One of my favorite channels, y'all do such amazing work.
Wow, thank you!
Great work guys. Currently in the US until 9/12/23 See you soon!
The drone shots are awesome!
Thanks - I am learning how to fly curves!
Love seeing the progress of the work going on up there!
What a lovely video :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Fantastic video! The drone work, especially the shots showing the grade and rock work were wonderful. Thanks for your work!
Have you ever estimated what it would cost to rebuild the wooden stalls of the roundhouse?
In terms of materials or manpower?
So the outer wood shell will just be cosmetic and the water will be stored in the plastic tanks? Is there a well underneath the center that supplies the water?
The tank staves will not be watertight. The original plans for the tank call for the usual wedge cutting of each stave. However the flat top tanks that C&S used actually had a vertical taper to each stave (with the top of the tank a slightly smaller diameter than the base.). Using plastic tanks inside will store the volume we need for occasional steamups (and not require that the tank be kept full to swell the staves tight enough to become water tight.). Water from a well on the roundhouse site is pumped up through the frost box in the center of the support columns.
Prototypical wooden railroad tanks required that the metal compression rings that held them tight enough to be watertight be adjusted for temperature. In our case that would include sub-zero to 80s.
Great to hear you have lots of volunteers to assist your efforts.
Cool that the band dress up in "railroad" attire. Is that their normal "uniform" or did they do this special for this event?
Many of the great railroads had their own brass band. The Denver Brass performers dress in costume for this event.
How many rivets on locomotive #4 and the tender? Any idea? Can't have a rivet video and not tell us how many there are......
Nice to see progress! DSP&P HS thank you!
Que lástima que lo tuvieran a la intemperie.
I am a 73 year old life long rail enthusiast and have been involved with 5" and 2 1/2" scale ng steam for 50 years. While I deeply appreciate the efforts you are making, my only memory of Como was bitter cold even in summer. It will never ve a tourist destination.
I didn't get a chance to go this year.
I visited Como in the 1970's and found it to be bitter cold and desolate. So the question is why do this?
We need the water tank for our steam locomotive "Klondike Kate." We have built a lot of track as well.
The piccolo part of Stars and Stripes on trumpet. It works!
Great video, showing what started it all in 1995, when we laid the track at Windy(not rocky) Point , and the restoration of the section house, which prompted the creation of the 1st RR day that year!
I visited Como once long ago, sometime in the 1970's before any of this work started. It was a very cold day, the place seemed inhospitable to me.
That's some very beautiful landscape there, sir! :) Greeting from Austria! :)
Es freut mich zu wissen, dass es für Sie interessant war. How did you hear about us???
@@denversouthparkpacifichistoric Hey there :) Well, I think it all happend when I was looking for some kind of railroading game where you can drive a loco in first person and also do some shunting and track laying and so on. I always was a big fan of Sid Meyers Railroad Tycoon, but it lacked those features as it is a bird's eye view tycoon game... :) Then I found the game *Railroads online!* which was EXACTLY what I was looking for. It is in a pre-release-state but you can already play it. It's staged in an amazing fictive, mountainous area that instantly reminded me of the Rockies. That lead me to the whole "narrow-gauge in the US" thing and just by clicking this and that I ended up at your channel. After the first or second video I was looking up Como in google maps and thought "...what? Hartsel? Fariplay? SOUTH PARK? I know these places!" That is because I'm a very, very big fan of the TV series that is staged in your beautiful part of the world! :) Then the RUclipsr by the name Hyce - who is now working in the colorado railroad museum - started his videos about that railroading game and he also told us a lot about all the narrow gauge operations that were going on in Colorado back in the days. And so now I'm here :) It's such a cool project you have there. I was already looking at the shop you have (dspphs.org) where one can buy calendars and other merch. But do you ship to Austria as well? :D Keep up the good work! It's so good to see people taking care of preserving history and teaching it to others. Kind regards from Austria.
