The History of Byzantine Italy [534-1181]
The Gothic War between the Byzantine Empire during the reign of Emperor Justinian I and the Ostrogothic Kingdom of Italy took place from 535 to 554 in the Italian Peninsula, Dalmatia, Sardinia, Sicily and Corsica. It was one of the last of the many Gothic Wars against the Roman Empire. The war had its roots in the ambition of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I to recover the provinces of the former Western Roman Empire, which the Romans had lost to invading barbarian tribes in the previous century, during the Migration Period.
The war followed the Byzantine reconquest of the province of Africa from the Vandals. Historians commonly divide the war into two phases:

Correction at 15:04: The Crusaders did not seize control of the Balkans. In 1205, they suffered a major defeat at the hands of Bulgarian Tsar Kaloyan at the Battle of Adrianople, significantly weakening the so-called Latin Empire that had formed after the sack of Constantinople. This defeat diminished their influence in the region, and they were no longer a significant factor in the Balkans. They managed to survive until 1261 only because Bulgaria, Epirus, and Nicaea were too focused on fighting each other rather than reclaiming Constantinople. Then the arrival of the Mongols threw everything into even greater chaos, lol.

This is (I'm sure accidental) Julian the Apostate, Jovian and Valentinian erasure - they should all be right between Constantius II and Valens; also incorrect too because Julian conquered back large swathes of Gallic and Germanic land in the Constantius II map I'm seeing - great work on the timeline despite the oversight.

Having learned a lot about byzantine history the past few years, i have to say, they weren't this shining beacon of civilisation being threatened from foes on all sides. Post heraclius and the arab conquests, They were a decaying corpse of an empire ruined by the most toxic culture of court intrigue in all of history. They had all the resources and plenty of opportunities to reconquer and thrive, but the byzantine state was so resistant to getting anything done at all. Only basil the 2nd managed to make it function properly in those 600 years.

They had victories all around their frontiers in the Macedonian renaissance though. The empire from 950-1050,was far from decaying,it was largest and wealthiest European empire atm

@hopeundertheblacksun they took back antioch and gained some bits here and there, but compared to previous roman campaigns and other empires campaigns at the time its quite sad. An earlier rome would have used the opportunity of the collapse of the abbasids to retake the levant and even egypt. The byzantines retook a few cities, and that was it. They even did raiding campaigns further south which is just sad to see the "romans" stooping to that level.

@@ziggytheassassin5835 bruh. They conquered Crete, they conquered Bulgaria, vassalised Croatia, then campaigned in Syria and also conquered Armenia proper by 1025 AD. The Byzantine Empire also crushed the Kingdom of Hungary under Manuel I and secured many victories all around. You have to realise that no other empire in Europe was stacking so many Ws consequently lol. Even Rome itself got sacked by Saracens in the 9th century, the "Holy Roman Empire" was that powerless in Italy(the region where it claimed it legitimacy from).

There are two classes, those who prefer fantasy and those who prefer "pragmatism" if trying to make the Empire survive is pragmatic, personally I am more of the pragmatic class but I respect the other class, I like when there is a minimum of credibility. Afterwards, this video is 3 years old and I already find it far too optimistic in hindsight.
