Restoration Biker

Добавлен 12 июн 2016
I am an old motorcycle mechanic who has now reached that part of his life that means I can spend time and energy doing things for fun, rather than trying to earn money to pay bills and all the other things that are life.
I am passionately interested in the first and second world wars. I love going to the places and experiencing the events that happened there. We have been to the Somme and Normandy amongst others, and really enjoyed it. We are going to go to Arnham, and the dams raided by the dam busters. We are hoping to go there this year, and I am hoping to make a film of the event.
The plan is to enjoy what is there to be seen, but also to enjoy the ride and the companionship of my friends.
Being able to have a laugh, is also very important. Come along with us and enjoy the time.

Hi, Yes I have come across this before . It is a real pain. What i normally do is rebuild the fork up put the spring in and do it up. Then the springs acts on the other end of the fork rod and stops it turning. You can tension the spring more than it is when it is built up if you need more . If that fails the only way is to get the factory tool which holds the other end of the fork rod. If you can find one that is dismantled you can make a tool up to suit. I have always managed to get it undone by using the spring method. Good luck my friend. Let me know how you get on.
@RestorationBiker mucgas gracias, pués voy a intentarlo así,ya os cuento que tal

Thank you for taking the time to make this very good helpful video. My 2004 R1150RT comes on Thursday and first job is to connect a phone mount charger to the battery, which requires thankfully just one sides removal. Video has been really helpful.
Great, thanks for the feedback, glad it helped you. Have fun with your R1150RT
Thanks for this! Going to look at a '98 tomorrow, 87,ooo kms, may be back for more advice ;) Cheers
Hi brilliant, they are great bikes. Let me know if you have any questions or worries. Take care and ride safe.
@@RestorationBiker The bike I looked at today was sadly a junker...at a classic sleazy used car dealer who had removed the seat and fairing parts (nowhere in sight) to ostensibly change the battery (why?), so no way to start it let alone test drive. Rattly front rotors, faded paint, slight movement in rear wheel (driveshaft)...walked away. Checking a couple of "newer" K1200's tomorrow (2005 and 2008, 111k and 74k kms respectively! Then an R1150RS later this week...
@@alphasportstv What a shame, amazing how some people sell vehicles. Keep looking there are a few really good well looked after examples out there. They are mainly the ones being sold by the owner rather than 'car dealers' Keep me up to date with your hunt, keep looking
@@RestorationBiker Yup I'm now avoiding dealers, or just use as reference. Today's 05 K1200GT w 130k kms was not bad, very cheap @ CAD $2000, needs some TLC but one original owner (sadly no maintenance records); other one was a dealer 08 K1200GT w 77k kms, $4300 (overpriced) but in near-new shape, again not a maintenance record in sight which is annoying...with these Beemers a full documented history is like money in the bank at resale time. Looking at a bunch more R bikes this week ;)
@@alphasportstv Hi, yes I like the K1200GT's nice bikes with a bullet proof engine. yes you are right the first one was cheap, but with a lot more miles (km's) than the other one. You could probably get it for less than 2K if you were cheeky. But it depends on what it needs and how long you are going to keep it for. Keep me up to date, as I am interested.
Great video - thanks for explaining I was looking for a video for the later 09 divi - as mine needs looking at - its getting a bit sticky when changing gear or going into netural when the engine is warm, ive changed the oil/filter but no difference.
Hi If it is a bit 'sticky' when engaging gears or neutral, then the problem is that the clutch isn't fully disengaging. This could be for a number of reasons. I would totally strip the clutch and fit new friction and plain plates, as you may have a warped plate. Check the whole set up when it is out and I am sure that you will cure the fault..
@@RestorationBiker thanks for your reply - I will take it apart and have a look its done a few miles now 75,000 but im reluctant to get rid of it as its so nice to ride / im not sure what I would replace it with. I might have to have a look for a spare one.

Hi, Glad you found it useful.
good morning, does anyone have a video that explains how to disassemble the gearbox of the yamaha xj 600 s 1994?
Hi, I have never had to strip a 600 diversion engine down that far. They are bullet proof engines. If you have a problem with your one it may be easier to replace the complete engine assy.
@RestorationBiker thanks for the reply; in reality I don't know if the real problem is the gearbox, in reality I changed the chain, crown and sprocket, but I noticed that the bike jerks in second gear when I give gas, I can't understand what it is, everything is adjusted well
@@giuseppebenelli8801 Does it only happen in 2nd gear?
@@RestorationBiker hi, yes today I checked with a mechanic, and he confirmed that it is the front engagement gear of the second gear... only him; given the cost, I'm thinking of doing this job with a friend, numbering all the parts, and making sure to put everything back in order
@@giuseppebenelli8801 Yes, sounds feasible. All you must do is take your time, and take lots of pictures to help with the rebuild. Do a video and put it on here.

Hi, Normally the air screw on most bikes is 1.50 turns out. But on the F650 it is totally different. I think the workshop manual said 4.50 turns out
Very helpful!

very nice .
Many thanks, glad you liked it.
Thank you, for the vid and for using closed captions when your mike died and we couldn't hear what you were saying. Please advise what fluid you dipped the pistons in before re-fitting them. Many thanks.
Hi, Glad you enjoyed the video. The fluid that I dipped the pistons into before fitting them was brake fluid. As it is an oil based product, it helps the pistons slide into position, and, more importantly, They won't' stick' when you bleed the brakes out. Always use plenty of brake fluid when you are re-building brakes it really does help them go together properly.

That's my brother...I'm considering an RT. What year is this Bike? Are '96 to(?) 2000 all pretty much the same? Differences?
Hi, this bike is a 1998. All the 1100's are the same just a few minor differences. The main differences were done to the breathing system of the engine. But that was only on the very last of the 1100's. Everything else was largely un touched. (When it is right, why change it?) I really think the 1100, is the best oil head that BMW made. The 1150 is nice, but nowhere near as well designed as the 1100.
Skinners Union. Seem to remember a cheap power upgrade to a 998 Mini was to get hold of a Mini automatic inch and a half S.U. that was quarter inch wider. Similar gains to having twin one and a quarters apparently and without the hassle of balancing.
Yes, I had a couple of those mini autos. I sold one to a guy who exported it to Florida.
Hi Just found your channel after a search as it looks like I'm going to be removing head(s) on my early 1100GS due to suspected piston ring trouble... Have watched both the head relevant vids and now this one to see the final result; really great. Nice work and looks superb in the Guzzi colours... Amazingly I recognise the junction at 2:47 in this vid so will be keeping my eyes peeled for you on the road in West Norfolk. My bike is distinctive too, as is like the one on the handbook in its original colours, so keep your eyes peeled too. Hope to see you about. Thanks for the informative vids. Cheers Jim
Hi Jim, glad you liked the videos. I do like the BMW oil heads, they are IMO one of the best bikes BMW have ever made. We don't live at the filming location, my daughter does. She did all the drive by filming for me. We went down to hers on the way to do the 'ride to see a fallen zeppelin' video. I go to Matlock Bath sometimes may see you there. I will keep my eyes peeled for you. Take care.
Excellent video Sir
Glad you enjoyed it, many thanks.
I have been telling my wife for years now that I have far to much stuff to conform with standard tidy and this is tidy and I know where everything is just don't touch anything
Yes, yes, yes. I knew a mechanic who was used by a lot of racer guys because he had a rolling road (very rare 40 years ago) and he was a brilliant mechanic. I really liked going to his workshop. It was a tip really messy. But to him everything was in its place. When my mates come round and I do a job for them, I always tell them NOT to put my tools away when we are finished. One of them didn't listen to me and I 'lost' my grease gun for 6 months!!
How many miles were on your F650 at the time you undertook this overhaul of the water pump?
Not too sure. But, I think it was about 28,000 miles.

So happy to come across your series on the F650. Can't wait to dive in and watch all your videos on this bike. I just so happened to bring one home yesterday. This poor bike has been sitting in a barn for the last 13 years. It was parked and never moved until I pulled it out. At least it was out of the weather. I work on cars mostly. I'm hoping your videos will give me tons of tips and information. I will thank you in advance for taking the time and energy to make these videos.

Let me know if you have any questions re your bike, I am more than happy to help.
Thank you, that's very generous of you. I'm retired as well. I work at a much slower pace these days. The luxury of not having to race against the clock. I'm more than certain that I will be taking you up on your offer. Cheers and thanks again.
@@eljackster Yes it is amazing how long you can be in the workshop, and yet very little gets done. But! What does get done is very satisfying. Beats working eh!
I have a BMW 97 R850R. It does not come with a fairing but I bought an old Vetter fairing. Now I have to figure out how to mount it to the bike. Is it even possible?? Do you know of any video tutorials?
Hi, that is an interesting job. I am sure there should be a bracket on the upper part of the frame just under the top yoke which should have a connection for the RT fairing. You could make good use of that to start. Then, you would need to arrange sideways mountings. If you look at the way that the RT's fairing frame attaches to the main frame, you could make use of those mounting points on your bike. It is a big job, but a very enjoyable one to work on. Keep me updated on how you get on.
@@RestorationBiker Hello! Thanks for responding. Just to be clear; my bike is not an RT and the fairing I want to fit is not specifically for a BMW. The fairing is made by Craig Vetter. I was told that it can be fitted to any bike. However, the mounting for it will have to be a custom build. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding what you are saying. Cheers!!
BMW or not. I would not buy 20 year old bike or over 40tkm without complete tear parts and bearing changes. You dont fafo with bikes. It costs your life.
Oh dear you wouldn't want to be me then. I won't buy any vehicle until it's done well over 40,000 miles, and 20 years old is 'late' for me.
What size tyres are they? Is it possible to go one size up in the width? Thanks.
Hi I think the front was a 110, and the rear was a 130. I am pretty sure that you can go up one size. Just make sure there is no 'contact' between wheel and frame/forks etc.
Thanks for sharing I am really enjoying your vids.
Hi, thanks for the nice comments.
Good afternoon, congratulations on your videos. I have a r1100rt from 2000. I would like to ask for your opinion on how I could place/attach a stick for an insta 360 x3 camera. The bike has neither a radio nor an opening for an antenna. Thanks.
Hi, thanks for your nice comments. It is a real problem attaching cameras to the R1100RT. About the only place to fit a bracket capable to attach a camera, on these bikes is the rear pannier brackets or the top box plate. You could fit one on engine crash bars if you have them.
If the forks are leaking it's not so bad???? OH yeah, now just your BRAKES are fucked and you die on the road!!! No biggie! You ARE an expert...
It would be nice what kind of bulb it is before I take it all apart. Would you happen to know that?

Yes my mate had a 500cc titan, great bike. I think the suzuki would be nice to ride but a bit wallowy with all that weight on it. The BMW is very solid when fully loaded, even two up. So, the Suzuki when unloaded, the BMW when loaded.
