    I worked in the gold mine there in the late 80's after I returned from South Africa where I worked for Gencorfor, The exploration (Irish Company) Enex, we done testing inside the mine chasing the vein but it had to be treated by the use of cyanide and the local council refused a License to operate, they had an option to truck the ore to the nearest smelter in newcastle and decided it was not viable after we had driven the mine nearly 2km inside the hillside

    Some nice samples there Nick. Albury was a fieldtrip location when I was at uni, seeing the Greensand exposures. Its a bit of a geological Mecca, there are even small, producing oil & gas wells near Albury. I think you were unsuccessful in separating the iron minerals because they are mostly coating sandstone quartz grains. (you'll also need a much more accurate scale to distinguish them as their SGs are very close to each other) If you look on your closeups you can see a few black rounded mineral nodules, but its mostly a very thin coloured layer on and between each quartz grain of the host sandstone. The larger nodules form as the iron concentrates and it binds the grains of the loose sand. Internet search "Albury Geology Trail" if you want to explore the area, good luck!

    Hi Nick, good to see you are continuing with your explorations. I think the second mineral sample may have been Limonite-Goethite which comes in many different forms. It might be very weathered iron minerals or it might even be man-made coal clinker. If you do an online search right now, you can get an Eastwing gold pan for under a tenner, it would certainly separate those heavy minerals a lot more efficiently. Best of luck for 2024.

      There's lots of iron around, so that might be a good sign. I think there is not much gold in the Forest of Dean area, but maybe a little bit if you dig down deeper than I did. It's a sedimentary rock area (mainly limestone). One prospector (One Man and His Pan) found gold in Birmingham, which he thinks was glacial deposits from Wales, so maybe the same thing is happening here.

  • @macrolithic
    @macrolithic 11 месяцев назад

    Bit of a tip here, forget bedrock, most rivers dont have it, look for old, hard -packed clay, deep in the bed edges, gold sticks to it and stays there.

      @surreygoldprospector576 11 месяцев назад

      Thanks for the tip. I've only hit the clay a couple of times, so maybe I should look for it first. I tend to pan down while digging a hole, but it makes sense to dig first and pan upwards if I find anything at the bottom.

    That white one is prob neolithic, I have got similar, ie classic leaf shape from LBK in Belgium (please google = Anatolian but pre-Turkish), a quite aggressive culture who were wiping out primitive hunter gatherers. Mesolithic was dominated by microliths which were used to make composite tools and I have found them high up on mountains in Wales where they were used in arrowheads by hunters following annual spring deer migrations.

    • @surreygoldprospector576
      @surreygoldprospector576 11 месяцев назад

    Shame, I really liked your home made pan (was it a ready-meal tray), didnt find the garret kit I have got so good, best was a large plastic round plant pot tray (60cm) that had been scuffed and textured a bit for better gold catching and I could fill with a massive amount of material (like 10kg) rocks and soil and really got results.

      I'm OK with the Garrett now I'm used to it. The 14-inch one can be a bit heavy, especially if I load it up well. It's good to have some more options, though. :o)

    Beautiful! I enjoy your videos. I'm in Hampshire and turn to crystals as the only interesting thing I can find locally. Like you I have also had a poke around a river in the South West, which was certainly more interesting than our local geology although I only have a tiny bit of black sand/mineral fines to show for it. Tempted to try and take some pics through the loupe. Keep up the good work.

      Thanks! I think Hampshire is quite similar to Surrey, with some chalk, sandstone, chert, and crystals. When I'm in the South-West I too notice the variety of igneous rocks and minerals. These photos were just taken on my (cheap!) phone and enlarged, so maybe that's another option. I was amazed at the picture quality you get nowadays! :o)

    Thats a beautiful specimen. You are holding half of a geode. A chert nodule formed by a warm silica-rich fluid deep underground which has infilled a void or replaced another mineral, probably within the chalk. The chert has been deposited first, but the void has not infilled totally and the quartz has had time to crystallise those beautiful 'euhedral' crystals. Or else the solid chert has been dissolved away over time and the void filled by the mobilised silica from the chert. Chert is so hard that holding in a hand would never cause any wear, so I dont think its been fashioned by man, but it looks all natural to me. Either way, you have a superb mineral there. If you can get in really close, check if the fine black material amongst the Quartz may also also be crystals, maybe goethite or magnetite.

      Thanks Rob - that's interesting info. I had to look up 'euhedral' so I've learnt something new! (It means a crystal that can form into its natural shape). Yes, I agree I am speculating its (human) history, but there is less doubt about its geological background. I'm starting to think the quartz crystals may have formed early in the nodule's life, which makes them many millions of years old.

      Thanks Chevsy! I was thinking the same. I'm not certain, but all those stones in one place did look just like an old dump pile. Maybe for gold, maybe for tin, or perhaps just the farmer giving the cows a place to cross the river!! :o)

      @@surreygoldprospector576 could well be any of those, or possibility of previous prospector/s damming the river placing the bigger stones to run sluices off of during higher waters? Maybe :)

      @surreygoldprospector576 Год назад

      Yes, that's true. I saw this kind of thing a lot in Cornwall with the old tin streaming works from the 1800s. I think I need to either avoid these areas, or somehow use them to my advantage! Behind the dam might be a good place, but it is usually quite deep and muddy.

    Good detective work to find the Chalk in the car park with the flint nodules.Your crystals are very old, millions if not tens of millions years old. Forming many km down in the crust where hot fluid, under great pressure, rich in dissolved silica circulates. We only see recent crystals form around volcanic or very saline regions in recent times, so you might see surface sulphur or salt crystals that are in thousands of years, but silica crystallisation is happening way beneath our feet over millenia. Your red chert may even be Permian or Triassic, stained red with iron nearly 300 million years ago and washed out of the Tertiary gravels by glacial rivers 3 million years ago and youre the first one to see them.

      That's very interesting - thanks! I am still looking for where the chert came from. In theory from the Lower Greensand layer, but where I've been so far (Pitch Hill and Devils Punch Bowl) I have only found sandstone. It would be great to break open a fresh chert nodule and find untouched crystals!
