Muddy Mongoose MTB
Добавлен 6 мар 2019
Hi there, I’m Donald, (aka Muddy Mongoose)
I am a complete novice when it comes to mountain biking. This channel is going to chart my journey as I try to learn how to ride like a boss. We could be in for a long haul! Watch me make a fool of myself as I battle my fears of landing on my head and breaking limbs struggling to go from bumbling idiot on a mountain bike to a gnarly shredder or what is more likely; a moderately improved idiot on a mountain bike.
Why not like and subscribe to watch this buffoon in action.

Back on the Bike - Return after 3 months - Braefoot MTB - Fife MTB - Scotland MTB
My first MTB ride for 3 months was rusty to start with but successful. I cleared the step up jump on the M1 line for the first time properly...I did have a crash though so it was business as usual. Always great to be out on the bike in the woods.

Storm Ravaged Blairadam MTB! Fife MTB - Scotland MTB
Просмотров 5242 месяца назад
I returned to Blairadam for the first time in a couple of years and am sad to say that many of the trails that I've enjoyed riding there are now practically un-rideable or completely un-ridable due to storm damage and tree felling work. There are still a few untouched trails that are open and fun to ride...Still can't turn right on tight turns down steep sections of trails.
The Other Side of Pitmedden MTB - Fife MTB - Scotland MTB

Many people visit Pitmedden to ride the fantastic downhill trails but Pitmedden has even more to offer at the opposite side of the forest and inbetween. The east end of Pitmedden has an amazing array of trails ranging from blue to black grades but many of them are red graded. There is something for everyone and even if you are a downhill trail slayer I strongly recommend you check some of the o...
50 Shades of Flow - Pitmedden MTB
Просмотров 2036 месяцев назад
One of the most fun and flowy trails that I have ever been on. 50 Shades of Flow at Pitmedden is short but very sweet. Pure enjoyment...just don't get too close the the trees. It can be quite sketchy in the wet as it gets muddy and slippy around the trees. You don't want to end up hugging a tree at high speed!
Pitmedden Black Trails with Pistol Pete

Pete and I returned to Pitmedden to do some of the downhill trails. We did Covid 19, Don't Send It and Send It - All black trails and finished the day off on one of my all time favourite trails - the red trail called A River Runs Through It. Pete did the rooty drop on Don't Send It too, a great day on the bikes.
Brilliant Ballo MTB

Had a fantastic day at Ballo Hill with Paterson. It has been 4.5 years since my one and only visit to Ballo and my return was just as enjoyable as the first time. Even better actually! Ballo is a great place with lots of spicy trails as the names would suggest. I definitely won't leave it 4 years until I return. Highly recommended, they are some of the most fun trails I have ever ridden.
Craigvinean Hill/The Hermitage- First Visit - Dunkeld with Paterson
Просмотров 6108 месяцев назад
I finally gave some of the trails on Craigvinean Hill/The Hermitage at Dunkeld a go with Paterson. They were as difficult as I was expecting. I feel that I could do them better if I just keep my head up and look ahead more. Also maintain a good rolling speed. I kept slowing down to much and then got caught up with the roots etc.
Step Up Jump Practice - Braefoot MTB - Fife MTB - Scotland MTB
Просмотров 4019 месяцев назад
I returned to Braefoot to try to do the step up jump at the bottom of the M1 line. I have done it before but only a couple of times on one day last year. Since then I have chickened out of doing it again and so I thought it was about time I gave it another shot.
Dunkeld with Ricardo - Dalmarnock Woods - Dunkeld MTB

Had a great day with @RicardoPetrazzi at Dalmarnock Woods near Dunkeld. It was a challenging day due to the slippy conditions. Some parts of the trails were very grippy but others were very sodden and mushy which made me a bit nervous. Ricardo was riding well on his hardtail and was making it look easy! Another top day at Dunkeld my favourite place to ride.
Introducing Paul to Braefoot MTB - Fife MTB - Scotland MTB

It's always fun showing someone new to Braefoot around and I had a great time showing Paul some of the trails. It was very slippy with the wet leaves and soaking mud but a lot of fun...the gorse bushes were like cheese graters on the hands though!

Dumyat First Visit featuring Ricardo - Stirling MTB - Uni Woods MTB - Witches Craig Trail

My first visit to Dumyat was great fun. Ricardo and I had tried to arrange doing this for ages and eventually managed to meet up to do it. It was also great to do Witches Craig at Uni Woods too as that is a trail I had seen in videos and had wanted to do for a long time. The cliff top views are amazing. A top day on the bike.

Testing myself at Pitmedden MTB - Fife MTB - Scotland MTB - Black Mamba/Heart of Darkness/TTApeworm

A successful day testing myself and my new bike on more difficult trails at Pitmedden. I attempt to do the drop on TTApeworm trail which I have always chickened out of before. I also attempt to do the large rocky section on Heart of Darkness trail which I also chickened out of before. I give Black Mamba trail a go for the first time a tricky black trail and also revisit Loam Lover and Rootmagge...

Trail Speed Sessioning at Braefoot MTB - Fife MTB - Scotland MTB
Fantastic review. Thank you. I always run a Magic Mary soft 2.6 at the front. At the rear I’ve run a Maxxis Rekon, a Nobby Nic and a Wicked Will. My favourite being the Rekon. Surprisingly amazing. At the moment though looking to change to Michelin like yours or Continental Kryptotal and Xynatol. I live in Bristol so it is always wet and muddy but clay and limestone so supper slippery. Ride a tonne in Scotland (I’m from Scotland) the Lakes, Peaks, Yorkshire, Snowdonia the Alps and Norway. So like an all rounder and good rolling 👍 Tyres I don’t get on with. Max is other than the Rekon on the rear
@Mugtree cheers mate! I've never ridden a rekon before or Kryptotal but I know some who think they are great tyres too. I have ridden Agassai as well which are pretty good as long as it isn't too muddy, so I'm back on the Wild Enduros again now! Sounds like you do a lot of riding in tough places. I'd love to check those places out on the bike. Thanks for your comment it's great to get real life reviews off fellow mtbers. 😃👌🤙🤙🤙
@ no worries and great to hear. The Wild Enduros definitely sound good. Will give them a try. Thank you I love mountain biking. Definitely if you can explore. There is an amazing world out there
Great vid Donald, I hope you get out again soon.
@crazyoldmaninthewoods thanks Andy, hopefully I'll get out again in the near future. 😃🤙
You were looking at the 🌳 ended up on yer erse 😂 Classic
@@kenphileh 🤣🤣🤣quite possibly 🤔 🤣🤣🤣
My local trails. We spent a lot of time on the drainage works in the Spring. More work to do this Winter. You had a nice day for it. If you ever come back, give any of us in TTA a shout, and we'll chum you round.
@DrFaroon cheers! You are all doing a great job up there. The trails are superb and you could see the work that's been put in. Thank you! 😃👌🤙🤙🤙
Only ever been in there walking with the wife, didn't realise there was so many trails. Some bits look interesting, might have to go and have a wee explore since it's so close. Pity storm Arwen made such a mess though. Good to see you back out Donald. Thanks for filming
@crazyoldmaninthewoods Cheers Andy, its a really nice forest for walking. Some great fun trails as well. Sadly there was a lot more that are now gone, not just because of storms but felling too. To be fair, there must be a good trail crew there because the amount of trees down is crazy but they'd still cut through lots to open up some of the trails at the top of the hill. Hopefully in time more will be opened or made. Hope you're doing well mate. 😃🤙🤙🤙
Such a shame to see the state of the trails there now. Looks like you made the most of it though 👍🏻
@rossjacksonmtb yeah, it's a pity mate. Still some fun trails there though. 😀🤙🤙🤙
Was passing through Blairadam on way to Benarty Hill with Stoozer and noticed some of the trail exits, was wondering how they were running good to know. Tight turns into drops are difficult, I usually need a run up to the drop to clear. Thanks for sharing Donald and good to see you back out on the bike! 😁🤙
@garyalexander3281 cheers mate. There are still some good trails there but unfortunately quite a few of the ones I liked are gone. 🤙🤙🤙
I can’t do that right turn either - there’s just something about it!
@helenpeters436 the roots running across the corner are very off putting for me...I'm sure I'll do it one of these days and I'll think to myself- why was it freaking me out?🤣🤣🤣 Is Blairadam your local?
That is so weird, Mark and I were just talking about heading into Blair Adam to try fix some of the trails and a possible feature. It's on his back door so worth the investment in time. How is the new bike holding up?
@TheBikingVikingDude it's a great place but there would be so much work to get those trails back, the amount of massive trees down is crazy. Mind you there are probably plenty of bits to get back or reroute. The bike is great, I love it. Not been out on it enough though but hopefully will get out more soon. You been shredding much recently?
@muddymongoosemtb9873 Yeah, Mark and I have been hitting a lot of places, lots of footage to be edited but not had time with work, and I had to repair my laptop Should have something new out by the end of the week. Where are you hitting next?
@TheBikingVikingDude I'm not sure, been wanting to go back to Comrie Croft as only been there once and really enjoyed it...so maybe there. I'll look forward to seeing your videos when they are out mate. 😀🤙🤙🤙
This is the greatest thing I’ve ever seen.
@@shygravy 🤣🤣🤣thanks
Good to see you back in the saddle 🤘🤘🙂
@RicardoPetrazzi cheers mate. You been out much?
Hi, where is the start of the trails for Fordell Woods start if comimg down from Crossgates/Duloch?
@user-uc7se2no7b hi there I've never entered it from that direction but I'm pretty sure you can enter from the B981 into a road called Fordell Castle and that will take you to the start of a trail called the Scout Camp Loop on Trailforks. Hope that helps.🤙🤙🤙
@@muddymongoosemtb9873 thanks very much for the help, just trying find more local places, as just new to using trails on a mountain bike
@user-uc7se2no7b there are trails at Lochore Meadows, Braefoot and Blairadam Forset. All worth checking out.😃🤙🤙🤙
6:15 how do you get to this point. Can you put in cordinates pls
Hi there 56°06'09.5"N 3°58'51.7"W is approximately where it is according to Google Maps. I hope that helps. 🤙😃

@@muddymongoosemtb9873 Aye its ace. Was back there bout 3 years ago,. Had been 20 yrs previously since I was last there. Good times. Changed a bit and can only get better. Shame the body's not so young now 🤣🤣
Great review thank you
I think that gully squeeze u just need to trust in your bike and go for it if u manage the heart of darkness one you will do gully squeeze also when u do it will think why did I hesitate it was easy just getting over the fear sometimes helps if you follow someone down as well to see there speed and lines .I'm sure you will do it next time
Cheers mate, I know what you mean, so many times I've bottled it on things and then when you eventually do it you think to yourself, what was I worried about? 🤔🤣🤣🤣 I think if I could turn that corner smoothly before it I'd be fine, just slowed down too much and that was that. I'll give it a go again in the future. 😃🤙🤙🤙
good vid mate! - the trails out the back are awesome, i usually go out there to get a few miles in, then finish with a few laps of the steeps at the car park. you were riding well in this vid. getting some nice speed up on Flow. and well ridden over the rock on heart of darkness, and the exit to the fireroad after loam lover - i thiink that wee bit is trickier than the end of gully squeeze. i think its purely a psychological block you have for gully squeeze. i think if you just come in and commit to it, you'd be over it no problem.
Cheers Dave, I think you are right...I do seem to almost freeze as I come into that right hand corner but I've realised recently that it's pretty much all tight right hand corners into steep stuff that I have a problem with...need to keep practicing and commit to it as you say. Hope you're doing well mate. 😃🤙
You where riding well ,very smooth over alot of that tech especially that rock garden .We'll done
Thanks mate, they are great trails. Even better when they are dry! 😃🤙🤙🤙
Fantastic work mate, clean riding and really great trails. Thanks for sharing and have a nice week. Ride on🤙
Thanks mate! 😁🤙🤙
nice ride dear friend, it is bit hard, but I like it, have a great week, greetings from Argentina
Thank you Sergio. It's a fun place to ride. 😃🤙🤙🤙
Managed Pitmedden in the dry few years back certainly makes a difference enjoy riding trig to tyre and will try flow one of these days, only tried heart of darkness once didn't manage it all but good mix of enduro and cross country. Great stuff Donald thanks for sharing 😁🤙
Cheers Gary, it definitely makes it more enjoyable in the dry. 😃🤙
oh it's nice to have some dry loam for a change! feels like its getting rear these days
Definitely mate, so much better than endless sloppy mud! 🤣🤣🤣
Another great video mate. Keep it up 🤙
Thanks mate! 😃
Looking good Donald, are you coming to Glentress on 4th August for my 50th bday bash 😀
Cheers mate, if possible I'll be there, it would be great to meet up. I'm on holiday then but our plans aren't finalised so not sure if I'll be back. But if I can I'd love to come along.😃🤙🤙🤙
Nice looking wee trail, don't think I ever did that one. Might head back up there soon and have a go at tit. Thanks for filming
It's a fantastic wee trail, pure fun factor 😀 🤙🤙🤙

Go to comire croft
Funnily enough, I've been thinking that I need to go back to Comrie Croft. Only been once a few years ago and really enjoyed it. Is that your local?😀🤙🤙🤙
Go to comire croft
Have passed that trail but never got round to trying it, looks like fun definitely watch out for tight gaps between trees, thanks for sharing Donald! 😁🤙
Cheers Gary, it's definitely worth a quick whizz down it. It was dry on this occasion but it is pretty sketchy in the wet as its fast and you can slide on the mud and roots towards the trees! Such a fun trail though, one of my favourites.😃🤙🤙🤙
came here because I can't nose breath with the goggles pushing on my nose, maybe I'll try glasses
I know what you mean. Glasses are really good but I do still use my goggles if it's really windy or if it's really muddy as I have had mud get in my eye under the glasses.🤣🤣🤙🤙🤙
doing well mate, don't blame you for walking bits, i'm trying to be less hard on myself when i chicken out of a section, so i can quickly forget it move on and carry on having fun.
Cheers Gordy, I'm the same, trying not to get too frustrated at myself and move on...I'll do it next time, I hope! 🤣🤣🤣🤙🤙🤙
Another nice vid dude. i reckon that if you're doing the wee steep chute on 'Dont Send It' - just before the wee drop that pete hit, then you can defo do the wee chute on 'COVID-19' - its definitely easier and straighter. Its actually just similar to the one on 'Send it' that you didnt have any problem at all on. And the bone rattling bit on 'river runs through it' - there must be a better line through that section - i'm sure it costs me a few seconds there, but ive yet to find a better line.
Cheers Dave, I'm pretty certain I can do that chute on Covid 19 but it was the first run of the day and it was slippy. Think if we'd done a warm up lap on A River Runs Through It first I would have been OK...but then again maybe not I might still have bottled it. 🤣🤣🤣 Hope you're doing well mate. Would be good to get out on the trails again at some point with you. 😃🤙🤙🤙
@@muddymongoosemtb9873 ye all good mate. Anytime!
Cheers Gary, the dh trails at Pitmedden are really good but I do find them pretty difficult. Well worth giving them a go if you visit. I've never been through to do any trails on the west coast yet. Seen some videos, it looks good. 😃🤙🤙🤙
Good to see Pitmedden trails never done any of the jump (or in my case roll and hope for best 😂) trails well handled by yourself especially with sloppy conditions, after recent visit to Helensburgh wnt back to try out Thier trails very boggy and techy trails which will require more visits and sessioning, thanks for sharing Donald! 😁🤙
Good effort mate. Still to get up to Ballo myself
Cheers, Ross! Definitely go mate, it's a great place with lots of brilliant trails. 😃🤙🤙🤙
Thanks for sharing the experience. Looking forward to giving these trails a go for myself also. You have to go back an give them a 3rd go! looked like a good day oot!
Cheers, Ricardo, you should definitely check them out. You'll love them, I'm sure. It's a great place to ride, and there are lots more trails there. I'll definitely return and won't leave it for another 4 years! 😃🤙🤙🤙It was good conditions on the day, pretty grippy. The trails would be very difficult when wet, I think.
You sounded terrified mate 😅
🤣🤣🤣 Believe it or not but I was actually quite relaxed. Did swear a lot at the end because I kept messing things up braking too hard. It was a lot easier this time than when I was there before on my old bike...that day I was bricking myself!🤣🤣🤣 Cheers mate. 😃🤙🤙🤙
@@muddymongoosemtb9873 you should treat yourself to some smooth flow trails after that root fest 😂
Some skillful riding there Donald (and just a wee bit of swearing 😂) Tight, twitsy and those steep drops at some of the trail ends would scare me too, always think when I get to those tree jumps that if I just get my speed up then bottle it as cant see where I'm landing and can often be tight. Very well ridden Ballo looks great am off out tommorow on a big bike day out doing the three lochs way with Stoozer. All the best, cheers! 😁🤙
Cheers Gary, yeah sorry it all got a bit sweary at the end! 🤣🤣🤣 It was more through frustration than fear. I was knackered by the last trail and wasn't concentrating properly and so was braking too hard. Brilliant trails up there, highly recommended if you haven't done them yet. Yeah those log drop/jumps weren't high but you couldn't see the landing until you were right on them. I'd do them now I know they aren't bad. Have a good day tomorrow mate, look forward to seeing the video if you are filming it. 😃🤙🤙🤙
@@muddymongoosemtb9873Although mainly forest road where we're heading there is some amazing scenery will attempt to capture with drone will still record GoPro footage of trip too, cheers! 😁

🤣🤣🤣🤣cheers mate.🤣🤣🤣
Bold having a crack at those trails dude. Craigvinean has some of the spiciest trails in the country. Youre certainly improving! another great vid.
Cheers Dave, they certainly are spicy, great fun though. I loved 9.8 trail. Bambi Farts was very difficult...I'm sure I could do better on it by going faster. Still don't think I'm capable of doing the whole thing without stopping but at least I know what to expect on it now. Bet you flow down them. Hope you are well mate. 😃🤙
@@muddymongoosemtb9873 ive not ridden as many of the trails up there as i'd like. i used to ride regularly up there on the old SDA DH trail. It was a phenomenal trail. And the other trail that i rode there was cairn to cottage, which has gotten a lot harder over the years. but is a great trail. If i head up that way, i usually ride at Pitlochry - which also has some utterly wild trails. Maybe need to make more of an effort to ride Dunkeld this year! And ye, all good here cheers!
@dangerousdave1970 I've seen videos of trails at Pitlochry, they look very steep and techy. With considerable more practice I may give them a visit.🤔😱🤯🤕🤣🤣🤣
Brilliant Donald you just gained another Sub here, i too had a striker lol, i loved the boxer too haha used to fling them around. Looking forward to catching up on your vids.
Cheers mate, I appreciate your support! 😃 I loved my Strika, such a fun bike. A friend had the Boxer and I remember him trying to do a wheelie and the front wheel just fell off as he lifted it off the ground. He came crashing down with a thump onto the tarmac!🤣🤣🤣 I've been a subsciber and enjoying you and Downhill Desires channels for quite some time. Great watching your adventures and you helping Gordon to progress out on the trails. Keep up the good work mate. .😃🤙🤙🤙
@muddymongoosemtb9873 Thanks Donald, looking forward to the summer season hopefully get Gordy out more and faster so he can catch me on film lol
You said it yourself..repetition repetition repetition bud, you will get there, you can go a lot harder into that step up too. Just a little out timing wise but Excellent work 👏 👍
Cheers mate! Yeah, got a lot of work to do until I can send jumps like you. Practice, practice, practice! 😃🤙🤙🤙
@muddymongoosemtb9873 doing great though, watched that one where you separated your shoulder, I was shouting at the screen to try get you to stop lol 😆
@@dirtcheapdownhill2848 🤣🤣🤣 If only you'd been there! 🤣🤣🤣
@muddymongoosemtb9873 you making me go all shy 😆
Aessegai is an amazing tyre in all conditions. Maybe the body position and confidence is more of an issue than the tyre? Keep at it though :-)
You've got a fair point mate. Callum who has been in a couple of my videos doesn't like Wild Enduros at all he swears by the Assegai's. And Dave Bradley who is also a very good rider and has been in some of my videos also loves Agassais. It's probably a case of good riders can use almost any tyre and ride well. I definitely need all the help I can get with grip! 🤣🤣🤣It's definitely a down to personal preference and as you say my body positioning does need a lot of work, that's for sure. I do feel for me the Wild Enduros have saved me from crashing a few times by gripping in at the last second especially when cornering. I didn't have any sketchy feelings with the Assegais when the trails were dry, I love how fast they roll, but in the mud I found them a bit skittish. As you say it's probably because I'm not weighting them properly through poor body position and that's why for me I feel the Wild Enduros are a better fit for me at the moment. Probably will switch back to the Agassai in the summer months though. I know a few people who are totally rating Continental Kryptotal tyres which look very grippy too. I'm quite intrigued to give them a shot. Cheers mate. Its good to hear your view of the Agassai's. What tyre set up do you run with? 😃🤙
Been to that side of Denukeld for a general explore but never ridden the trails. Some gnarly trails I always dread the side roots when wet back wheel usually fishtails 😂I actually need to stop on some of these trails and session more often always find myself trying to squeeze in more trails rather than riding same one. That steep drop bit 😲not for me, great trails, well ridden Donald and thanks for sharing! 😁🤙
Cheers Gary. They are definitely challenging- Bambi Farts trail was above my skill level for now to be honest. It was great fun sessioning the DH trail, trying to pick better lines and get loosened up, although I know what you mean about trying to cram as many trails into an outing as possible. I've seen you ride pretty techy stuff, I'm sure you'd be good on the DH trail it was rough but doable. 9.8 trail was also doable, with your ebike you'd get up the climbing sections easier as well- I was totally blowin' 🤣🤣🤣 I'm so unfit. 🥵🥵🥵😃🤙🤙🤙
@@muddymongoosemtb9873 Agreed years ago ridden up the forest roads here without the ebike and was totally blown out myself! 💥😂 Ebike definitely handy here, will have to get myself to Dunkeld soon 🤙
Those trails were stretching you a bit Donald, looked good though. Thanks for filming
They definitely were challenging Andy. Great fun though, I love the trails at Dunkeld, so good. Cheers mate 😃🤙🤙🤙
Great video mate, those trails looked so cool. Awesome work and big respect to you, it's not easy to ride those trails in those conditions and it's part of it that you have to push the bike once, that shows greatness and experience. Thanks for sharing and the transparency, I appreciate that. Keep up the good work and have fun on the bike. Ride on✌
Cheers mate. I appreciate that. You'd fly down these trails mate. 😃🤙🤙🤙🤙
Hey buddy, good going there, I've always looked at videos of this place and thought they were tough trails. They are quite demanding and I'm looing forward to giving they a try myself sometime soon. Absolutely no shame in doing a little trail walking, better than a trip is A&E. 😉 Next trip, have a crack at the ones at Birnam Hill, Electric Beaver et al. they are really good, not too steep or overly tech, got some nice flow interspersed with mud an root. Keep on bringing us great videos and just keep practicing they gnarly and Najery bits. Hope to catch up with again before not too long mate. 🤘🤘
You'd love these trails Ricardo and you'd get down them no bother mate. I've done Birnam before, they are top trails too. I love Dunkeld, it's definitely my favourite place to ride. Yeah, would be great to meet up again soon mate.😃🤙🤙🤙
