Locomotive Alerter
Here we see what is called an "alerter" on a locomotive. It is designed to keep an engineer awake and in the seat. After a set amount of time and if there is no input of any kind, then the alerter activates. It starts out as just a flashing red light and progresses to a loud beeping. The longer is stays on, the louder and more intense it gets until the reset button is pressed or there is an input on the control stand.
If the alerter is ignored for too long then the emergency brakes are automatically applied and the entire train comes to a stop. There is a specific button on the control stand that resets the alerter but any input from the engineer also resets it, such as adjusting the throt...

View Under Train at 65 km/h
Просмотров 16 тыс.3 года назад
A camera placed in between the tracks to capture an under train action shot scares engineer. Trains goes from 65 km/h to a dead stop and continues to move again. Take note of the frantic horn blowing by the engineer. While it was a relatively short and light train, the video shows how quickly a train can be stopped when met with an unexpected situation. A common misconception is that a train ne...
Engine Compartment of a 3800 Horsepower Locomotive While Running
Просмотров 20 тыс.3 года назад
This is a short video showing the inside of a running SD60 3800 horsepower locomotive engine compartment. Most of what you see is the large air compressor that pumps up the brake line of the entire train to 90 PSI. Also in the video is a tool cabinet with some basic tools and parts for replacing anything that might break while on the main line. The engine compartment is loud, hot, dirty, and ev...
Complete Shutdown Process of a 3800 Horsepower Engine EMD SD60 Locomotive
Просмотров 249 тыс.3 года назад
The entire process of shutting down an SD60 locomotive from running to completely dead. The entire process can be completed at the electrical cabinet behind the engineer's seat and at the control stand, with the exception of applying the handbrake. It is much faster shutting down an engine than starting it up. This engine is an EMD SD60 (special duty) and has 3800 horsepower. It was built in 19...
Revving a 3800 Horsepower Engine EMD SD60 Locomotive
Просмотров 134 тыс.3 года назад
A short video capturing the sound of a 3800 horsepower locomotive being revved up. Engine was already warm. The engine noise you hear in the background is another locomotive attached to the one that is being started. This engine is an EMD SD60 (special duty) and has 3800 horsepower. It was built in 1986. I do not work for the railroad in any way. This footage was given to me. I have more videos...
Complete Startup of an EMD SD60 Locomotive 3800 Horsepower Engine

The entire process of starting an SD60 locomotive from being totally dead to ready to run. Starting at the electrical cabinet to the engine compartment and ending at the control stand where the locomotive is controlled from. The engine noise you hear in the background is another locomotive attached to the one that is being started. This engine is an EMD SD60 (special duty) and has 3800 horsepow...
K'Nex Leave Me Alone Box

This is my K'Nex leave me alone box. It uses about 760 pieces and 1 standard K'Nex motor. It took about 8 hours to assemble and a little bit of tweaking, but now operates properly 100% of the time. However, I cannot take credit for this design. This was designed and first built Shadowman. Just one of many of his brilliant K'Nex creations! I simply followed his instructions. If you want to build...

Purrs like a kitten after start up 😂
She sure does!
Worse place ti work:a locomotive big like a football yard but a place for the mechanic like a tiny vietnamese toilet
Sounds like a computer running DOS 3.11
3:01 bro forgot to close door upper latch
Yes just yes love the video friend thanks
Glad you enjoyed it! Subscribe for more!
Why this thing is scary to me?
Fascinating. Too bad there is no verbal or displayed description of what the various controls enable. That would be truly educational. But thanks for recording the high quality AV. Just curious...
I am glad you enjoyed it!
Will it fit in a miata tho?
relic, time to retire
I know it. I feel it in my knees and hips.
I feel this needs a plc to automate alot of this
I love the smell of a Woodward governor in the morning. 💁♂️
I'm a Maintenance electrician and got weirded out there's a dang knife switch right next to a nice sized fuse u put your hand next too. Wow, I was expecting a flux capacitor somewhere lol😂😂😂
They always wondered what would happen if they touched the two contacts that that massive fuse is spanning.
Just like in train sim world
Worked on them for 36 years never gets old
I miss hearing that sound so much, when I worked at UP.
Rive on that lay shaft
Thanks for sharing ... love the hand-throttle in the "engine room" =)

1:45 Oh... that's why they're called engines
Awesome thing to see and witness, my dad's cousin was a loco engineer and I had the pleasure on being in the loco for 200 or so km, very neat to see this video :)
Why is it necessary to switch off all the little branch circuits when the main is off?
So there isn't a large surge when the knife swith is connected and disconnected.
2:10 How do you tell how long to turn the prime switch?
It says 10 to 15 seconds.
@@DLuxProductions thanks
For a while there was expecting to also see a soft serve machine. Looked like he also jimmy-rigged an office chair!
Its Alright I've seen this Walking Dead Tell Tale ,I got this
Wha...? Why remove the reverser handle?
So nobody steals the train.
@@DLuxProductions Oooohhh......okay. that actually does make sense. 😂
I really like the sound of the turbo chargers.. However, bad idea to expose this information to terrorists.
Tell that to train simulator.
I love the "key" to the engine is the lever for the reverser!
Nice turbo whine!
You should see how big it is!
One of my grandfathers on my dad’s side worked at a local train yard in my childhood home of South Portland, Maine, he’s since passed due to a cancer of which I do not remember. One of my favorite memories of him was him bringing me into a train car with valves and gauges, I don’t remember what kind it was as I was maybe 4/5 but hey, it was cool.
How many Volts in the bottom left corner?
600v everywhere.
@@DLuxProductionsSo how many people got electrocuted while operating these crazy switches?
@@masterofx32 None that I know of. They're all professionals.
3:40 So one can actually set power throttle to π ?
HELL YEAH
Looks so familer with Train Sim World 2
I learned all this in "sim train world 3" waiting on #5 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
The engine rev handle!
This will prove useful 😈😈😈
i thought they were supposed to open those valves at the side of the engine on the EMDS before cranking it over?
Not when you start the engine.
Why do the interiors get so dirty?
Nobody cleans them.
I love how the ‘danger 600 volts’ cover randomly exposes itself like a dangerous predator.
It all just for show anyway!
There has to be an easy way to do this
On the newer engines it's much easier.
I bet half those buttons and switches don’t do anything - it’s to make the driver look more important!
I bet you're right! They're just there for fun!
I can fit one in a miata...
Locomotives are pretty cool….we use one for loading grain trains….seeing this startup process is very similar to ours. Except we always have each cylinder petcock open and we roll the motor over in case there could be coolant in a cylinder which would cause it to hydraulic a piston…..very bad things happen when that happens lol….happened to us before lol. We actually run ours with a remote so a guy doesn’t have to always be in it when moving to the next car. This one looked a little more modern in the cab…ours is from the 50’s or 60’s I think….pretty crood lol. Basic controls look the same though.
A lot of those small switch engines are pretty old but fun to run.
He forgot to flip the mid button Generator Field, that's why he didn't get any throttle response at the end.
Gen field was up. It was in PCS.
3800 horses in your left hand Sound like a damn Jet Engine
And that is a low horsepower engine. Most modern engines are 4400 HP and are much easier to start.
Let the oil psi get up first
Brrruuummm brrruuu mmmmm brrruuummm brrruuu mmmmm
I love your vids
I appreciate that! Subscribe for more! I know I don't upload often but I do have more content coming!
@DLuxProductions will do 👍
My Ford 4.6 Triton 8 cylinder needs a few mins from cold start to idle smoothly 😺
So do these engines. They're pretty low on horsepower until they warm up.
Now I know how to start a locomotive. You know, because I’ve been trained. *slaps knee*
