We can enter a low metabolism mode at low temperature. No idea how to do it, but a woman was skiing, i think, in Sweden about 7/8 years ago. She went over a partially-frozen river without realising and the top of it shattered and she fell in. She got carried into the cold water but her head got trapped just above the water, so she was basically stuck in a river with water running around her and her head poking out the top. I can't remember how she got rescue. Maybe a partner was with her and called for help, but it would take rescue way longer than they thought she'd survive to get there, though rescue still left to get her. She passed out from the cold sooner or later while waiting. Took them hours to get to her and get her out, but when they finally pulled her out they assumed she was dead and she wasn't. She'd been asleep/unconscious for a long time under the cold, but she woke up when she was warmed up. I think she lost some feeling in her hands from the low temperature, but she was otherwise fine. Combine that with people like that Whim Hoff guy meditating in icy conditions, or that monk who petrified himself while metitating for a long time, and i figure we have the ability to slow our own metabolisms down to a point where we could hibernate. It's a question of how to activate it and how to wake up on the other side. Maybe you need something to wake you up, or a change in something around you like the temperature. But i believe this is an ability we have and we just don't remember how it works.

Mammals do not get their body temp to 0 degrees...maybe frogs that can become completely frozen

Our people back then used to be in constant threat of being ripped apart by creatures bigger than them. Hibernating in large communities would be an all-you-can-eat buffet for larger predators. If we did develop hibernating tendencies, it'd probably be in outer space where conserving energy is priority as we travel from one planet to another.

Very few animals would go to 0 Celsius, there is a species of frog which turns its blood into antifreeze but any other animals cell’s would expand, crystallise, and burst. You can’t cool down to 0c and live Also good to mention they wouldn’t start at 15c, that’s pretty low for a warm blooded creature. Other wise cool and informative! Nice video.
