Gordon was THE MAN at Datapoint. I was a field support engineer for Datapoint in the late eighties. One of my larger sites was Bass Pro Shops in Springfield MO. ( the original store). Their call center had not only Datapoint data processing equipment but also a Datapoint phone system (Infoswitch). It was one of the largest Infoswitch installs in the Midwest until we installed the hardware for a switching center in Overland Park KS. for a small long distance phone company named Sprint. We all know how that ended. Corporate greed and the SEC killed Datapoint. It was all about quarterly profits even back then. Too bad ,they had so many other great products no one even knows about now. They were ahead of the times.

Hello Gordon, and thank you for uploading this relic. I was the young man at this debate providing the comic relief. I was 23 at the time and now I'm 38, about to turn 39 in a few days. I was doing a case study on Farmers Branch for my Economic Development class at UNT, so I decided to insert myself into this debate to immerse myself into the Farmers Branch experience as a whole. It was fun and educational. The civility of the candidates here seems like something of a bygone era.
I was a 35 year old Dispatcher at Datapoint Germany between 1997 - 1999. We supported many companies of FORD with the Arcnet technologie. Unfortunately End of 1999 it died in Germany. Some service technicians survivied with a small new companie "Datacentro". I still have electronical parts, Datapoint balls and frisbee discs :-)
Stumbled upon this accidentally while learning and exploring distributed systems concept. What a fine piece of history.
Thanks for sharing! Best show on the boat
Calidad suprema de los cantantes , la orquesta y la puesta en escena. Todo a la altura de lo que ofrece Royal Caribbean. Espectacular compañía de cruceros. Yo creo que la mejor del mundo.
Andy C (Andrew Cruickshank) is the BEST!!! He made my cruise experience!!! His repertoire is 2nd to none. He's so very soulful!!!
Yes!! I'm glad you enjoyed him too, and are able to enjoy him again via my video!
Andy is a good friend of mine and a great musician.
@@gepeterson2 when were you on the Wonder?

memories indeed. I was an engineer in the San Antonio facility from 1979- 1987, when I was let go in the 6th round of layoffs after Edelman bought it
Cheesy, but funny.
Simeon is so funny and talented. Had me dying.
What fun!
traveling by airplane is never like life aboard a big cruise ship!! ;-)
All this entertainment while there's an ocean being neglected.🤔
Actually, transAtlantic and transPacific cruises are a great way for people to notice and appreciate the ocean... looking out across the ocean and clouds is literally the most timeless vision on earth that we'll ever see... a view that hasn't changed since literally a billion years before life appeared on planet Earth.
A bit of colorful and cheesy entertainment. But it looked like a few performers could have used a little more rehearsal.
Was that an a cappella performance? Outstanding!
yes, it is!!!
Those curtains swaying must show how rough the ocean was. A few times the curtains swayed quite far.
It was a little rougher the first day, as we were hurrying to get ahead of a fairly massive storm in the Atlantic! But Wonder of the Seas is taking the seas VERY well.
80's music and a bunch of old people walking around. Yup, there's your typical sea cruise. ;)
Longer and repositioning cruises tend to be a somewhat older crowd... most Americans have short vacation times each year, typically just two weeks, which makes taking a 14-day transatlantic crossing hard for many of us... unfortunately. Also, these long transatlantics during school season discourage families with kids (which is a plus, for many of us). :-)
From Type Writers to PCs and now laptops, palmtops and so on... The world advanced at a rapid rate and the journey of a thousand miles unbelievably began with the single step of the development of the first computer!!
It was wonderful to see how text modifications and all were such a great deal at that time in history. Today we are so used to so many of these features that we often take them as prerequisites. Yet valuable hard work went in to develop them and make them so widely accessible to everyone. Truly amazing.
Some of the stuff in Datapoint's system has never really been adopted by today's computers... including perhaps most notably, AIM (Associative Index Method).
A really nice video and certainly a good trip down memory lane !!
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
This is where Kennedy died
no it isnt. The room he died is no longer existent.
Gosh, that was so long ago, I'm surprised that many people are still ambulatory 😁
Thanks for sharing this Gordon!
Hei Gordon !
Hi Gordon !
Great to hear from you, Michel!! I hope you're doing well...!
WOW !!!!! I was there. Worked in Los Angeles. Flew over and over to San Antonio. Players Dungeons and Dragons in Bear County. Worked with Roger Hurr when I was in San Antonio. I was Systems Engineer and programmer. Installed the first ARC Network at the Star Dust Hotel in Las Vegas. Worked on DOS and RMS. 8800, 5500, 6000, Datashare, etc. I was also hardware trained to install and repair all DataPoint equipment. I did hardware and Software Support and programming. Ricky from IBM, Ret(formerly of DataPoint Corp)
Datapoint definitely changed the world of business computing forever away from monolithic mainframe computers. It was definitely a cool time to be around! You might enjoy sharing memories on our social media group... mewe.com/join/datapointcomputers ...! ;-)
5 years later...it looks like the cruise industry is not as attractive...or safe.
You wouldn’t happen to have a video of a girl throwing a guy to the ground from earlier that night, would you?
no, sorry...!
If Databus happened to be your first programming language you are spoilt for every other one, because Databus is so easy to write, so easy to read, so easy to compile and debug that all other languages come as a repellent shock that puts you off them for life. I taught myself programming in Databus overnight, literally, firstly by trial-and-error, then I read the manual, then I wrote the Answer and Master programs for the ARC that I ran as MIS manager for a power utility in New Zealand in the late 70's and early 80's. Later I wrote AIM-powered host software for the early days of the Internet here.
Databus truly is a remarkable programming language for lots of reasons. And I've been surprised that no other languages have ever picked up on AIM, which is an amazingly helpful file access method. I've done work with Infopoint Systems here in Dallas, and have used PCBUS (Infopoint's implementation of Databus) for many projects. I really ought to sit down with the source and update it so it will run on 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows, instead of having to run it on Dosbox or Virtual PC or some such.
If I remember correctly it was you, Gordon, who came to my Datapoint ARC at the Waitemata Electric Power Board circa 1980, where I was MIS manager, and there discovered what had been causing problems with CDC drives on ARC's all over the world. But ours was the worst ever, it would not run on an ARC for more than an hour, although stand-alone it was fine. So it pointed to the solution, which was to shield the ribbon signal cable with tinfoil. Has my memory served me correct?
Hmmm... I don't think that was me. I can't imagine what would have made it ARC-specific, other than perhaps the higher overall data transfer rates ARC supported. And most of those MIDS drives tended to be found on ARC file servers, rather than on smaller applications processors.
