Laura Ingalls Wilder has said that "I am beginning to learn that it is the sweet, simple things of life which are the real ones after all ...I believe we would be happier to go back to simpler living and more direct thinking. It is the simple things of life that make living worthwhile, the sweet fundamental things such as love and duty, work and rest and living close to nature."
I agree with those thoughts and this channel will serve to document our steps as we seek to live a homesteading, self-sufficient lifestyle by God's grace.

We caught a skunk!
Every morning when we went outside we would see a bunch of little holes dug into our yard so we wanted to see what was digging. This happened before and we had previously caught an opossum. This time the holes were dug near our chicken coop so we set the live trap again and this time we caught a skunk!
In this video well show how we were able to safely release it without getting sprayed. Essentially, the steps are:
1. Remain calm and continuously talk to the skunk so as not to scare it.
2. Cover the cage to help keep the animal calm and also to keep it from spraying you.
3. Clamp the trap door open so that the skunk can leave when it wants to.
I hope this helps if you're ever in the situation ...

My oldest son and I went deer hunting in Norene, Tennessee this past December. We didn't get a chance to harvest anything, but we did get to see one. It's still a blessing being out in God's outdoors! The music is a cover of Thom Pace's, "Maybe" by Uke4U2 @ www.youtube.com/watch?v=LN-83tBa

Wow, he was a big boy! I've been sprayed before. It's such a heavy oil and penetrates your skin so fast. I owned a restaurant and couldn't go in for days. They will kill your chickens. Hopefully this scared him too much to come back. Motion lights and music help to deter them, but honestly it's an ongoing battle. Nice to meet you, George! Thank you for subscribing. I've been a part of this community for a very long time, but only just recently started putting out content. I hope to have more videos up soon. Have a great weekend! 😊
Thank you! Nice to meet you, too. So far so good with him being gone. I think that I found where he was trying to build a burrow nearby and spread cayenne pepper around to encourage him to move on.
Hurry girls before Cluck Cluck gets here 😲🥺😁😩😊
Pay your neighbor $20 , that's what we did but yes he got sprayed 😂😂😂😂😂
Thank you for your comment! That was a good idea! It definitely felt like we could get sprayed at any moment, but thankfully we didn’t!
My dad you to trap the little stinker in a have a heart trap . He put them in the car and take their to the country . Never got spray !! He could handle bees the sting didn't bother him either . How he did this I don't understand . I don't have his skills I put up with sting but not the stink . I miss my dad .
I’m glad that you have these memories! Some people definitely have a gift. It sounds like your dad was one of them. Thank you for sharing!
Nice video!
Thanks for the visit
Nice
Thank you for stopping by!
Oh man. You need some IBC totes. 🎉❤
Thanks for stopping by! Yes we do! This is just one of our barrels and we have the chance to collect so much more.
Good idea, but what about drainage holes?
That’s a great question! You can save the milk/water caps and drill a few holes in them to let the water drain on to the next level. Thanks for watching :)
Brilliant idea
Thank you!
Some chunky chickens livin gooood!
They are loving life!
Hi there☺ from Australia. I had a very itchy patch on my left leg near my ankle. It has been there for many weeks, probably a black house spider's bite. Their bite is quite toxic but not deadly. I dabbed essential oil of lavender, and tea tree that usually work to stop the itch. Not this time. I heard in a recent video narrow leaf plantain's leaf chewed and then held on an area of skin that has been bitten by insects will draw out the toxin in a few minutes or less. I did just that today when I picked a few leaves from the grass verge of a footpath. Plantain's drawing power really does work. I have no more itch on that area of my skin!!! There's plenty of the narrow lead and less if broad leaf growing on the grassy areas of our footpaths 👌. Thanks for your videos. I ate a lead of the narrow leaf plantain and I was pleasantly surprised that it was very tasty.
That’s great! I’m glad that it worked for you!
Cool
I thought collecting rain water was illegal ? I hope that’s not true
Yes, collecting rain water is illegal *at a certain point*. Rain is water for everyone and if we didn't limit the amount you could collect it could have a affect on the environment and everyone else's fresh water supply. No problem with collecting 2 50 gallon drums in some places Edit: also it's not a liberal agenda please God we are divided enough as it is.
Good comment! Thank you! It is not illegal where we live in Tennessee, but it is illegal in some areas. You can check www.cdc.gov/healthywater/drinking/private/rainwater-collection.html for more information.
Btw if your gonna drink that you should boil it first just wanna be safe
I think he knows that. He lives like that..
@@itsstealz3159 yea like I said better to be safe
Thank you for your comment! These water barrels are for our garden area. You're right, though. If we were going to drink it, we'd have to filter and boil it or put it through a UV sanitizer.
new sub. look forward to sifting through your channel.
Thank you for subscribing! I hope that you enjoy the videos that we have. We are working on some more content and hope to be putting it up soon!
Great video - thanks!
Thank you for stopping by!
Great video. I managed to redesign some old pallets to make an outdoor workbench which features in my September 2021 video update on my channel about 1 minute into the video. I will be using it this summer for my gardening hobby.
Great, James! Thanks for sharing :)
@@SimplerTimesHomestead That's okay. This pallet bench now has lots of small pepper plants on it. Some of these peppers are really hot even though they are hybrids of a sweet and a hot plant! All the best.
There are many similar projects in Woodglut's plans.
LOL 2:23 When message came up, I KNEW EXACTLY what you were going to say! I had Just said same. GREAT IDEA to say! Used to do this as Kids. How FUN! Don't Ever remember being taught. _hmm_ *Thanks to your Daughter!*
Thank you! Kids have such a wonderful perspective on the world and really help me think. :)
privets are just too easy to grow from seed.
Very true! They are everywhere!
We have a few of these around. Gonna try to get rid of them soon before they start making berries
They grow like crazy! I hope that you were able to get rid of them.
When is the best time to make tincture out of this plant . i have a beautiful specimin
I have not made a tincture from it as they as ver common here, but if I were, I’d use the youngest, freshest leaves available.
You two did great job. Your daughter filming was great too. Thanks!
Thank you very much and thanks for watching! You are very kind!
Yup , but you didn't show the strowberry plants💁
Thank you for your comment. Unfortunately, the strawberries didn't come up. I think I got a bad stock of crowns.
These are everywhere. Most people don't know what they are. It's a shame.
Very true! Most people just think that they are annoying weeds.
This would be great for lots of plants/herbs. Especially those not liking wet roots as can just remove capvwhen rainsvto much and replace when water's drained out.
That's a great idea! Keep thinking outside of the box!
Great idea! Thanks.
Was looking for info on these. Already knew info you had and what it looked like but VERY GLAD you have shown this. Thank you!
Thank you for stopping by! Glad to have helped a little!
Great video, thank you, was looking for edible info on the narrow leaf variety and that answered it. I also read that for the broad leaf you can eat the seed tower parts too. Do you know if you can also eat the seed heads on the narrow variety or are they not as nutritious on the narrow kind as the broad?
Hi! Thanks for visiting! Yes, you can eat the seeds, but they can be very time consuming to collect from the heads. I'm not sure about the nutritional value, sorry. I've never heard that you can eat the heads themselves, only the seeds and the leaves. I hope that this helps!
Ok, thanks for the info!
If you cut the bottom off from the bottom and not the side then the re-enforcing moulded round edge will prevent the puckering when filled with soil.
Thank you for the great idea! Yes, that would be a great change to help the project.
So the top part that you cut didn't cut off the vines as they grew long and heavy
No, it didn't. We had limited success with the strawberries. The plants were fine, but we didn't get any substantial berry growth, unfortunately.
👑👑👑👑👑👏👏👏👏👏👌👌👌👌👍
Very adorable!! Way to go Juliana and Dad!
Thank you so much. We appreciate you watching!
love that idea. great upcycling. im going to try it. got another sub. thanks for the tips and ideas
Thank you! I hope that it goes well for you!
Check WoodPrix handbook if you want to make it cheaper and better.
Thank you for the reference. I'll check it out. We are going to be building some more, so I am always looking for a way to improve.
This is great! I am curious how it turned out?
+Jake The planter held up and was pretty decent. It did have to be waited down and then I had to transplant the strawberries. All in all, it was pretty good, you just have to be careful not to cut too far down on the jugs, or they'll start to sag.
Snowing in Clinton TN as well:) Love your videos:)
+Heather Marie Hi Heather! I hope that you enjoyed the snow. We received around 6 1/2" and we all loved it. Thank you also for your kind words about the videos!
We got about 5 inches in Nashville, which about shut down the city. It was very pretty outside the house and I thought about filming it like you did. Instead I took a long walk and was about the only adult outside. Some kids were sledding. Thanks for the views!
+Evan's Backpacking Videos Thank you for stopping by! We ended up with 6 1/2 inches at our place. It was beautiful!
Great idea!
+Wags1985 David Thanks for stopping by! I appreciate it and hope that this helps you!
Thank you! I appreciate it!
There should be an animated drawing to go with this.
Mary P Thank you for your comment. That is a very good idea. I think that that or at least something like a picture book would help the story as well. Unfortunately, I'm not a good artist or animator. :( If you (or anyone reading this) knows of a way to do this, I would be more than happy to add that. Thanks again for stopping by!
Great idea. I put a sock in the bottom and use a gutter to make them water from the bottom up. Less water needed and they don't get over watered.
That's a great idea! Thanks for sharing it!
Great video! Thank u for sharing! :o)
Love your smile Juliana !
You got enough Strawberry to make Smucker's Jam out of it George ? Maybe you can ship some to me in Siam Reap Province Cambodia...;)))))
Thanks for the info George ! I swear man,one of these day i will die from eating something, which i mistakenly believed are wild edibles.
Thanks for the great idea!!! Please do an update on this, I'd like to see the progress. I have tons of these jugs and wanted to do something constructive with them. I've been researching a while and your design is the best. Thanks again:)
Thank you for your comment! Unfortunately, the strawberry crowns didn't take to the planter. I'm not sure as to the reason as of yet, but will try again next Spring. I'll probably plant the strawberries earlier next time.
would love to walk the woods with you and LEARN!!!
Thank you. The woods never cease to amaze me. I love to take the opportunity to take my kids and share with them. There always seems to be so much to see. One of the things that I am doing this year to learn more aside from walking and observing is I am taking part in the Tennessee Naturalist Program, which is a program that meets one Saturday a month for ten months and covers so much "natural" information in the region. If there is one near you, I highly recommend it! Thank you again for watching and for your kind comment.
You've found your calling. This was a very original idea. I look forward to more how-to videos.
Thank you for your kind words. I'm glad that you liked it!
