why is that? surf gets STAB so does 1.5 x damage whereas ice beam doesn't. also surf's base damage in gen 1 is 95 and ice beam is only 90. so even without STAB surf does more damage. only advantage i see in using ice beam is the 10% chance to freeze, unless i'm missing something.

@neil5urre6l every time I ice beam a sanslash or an alakazam I one shot's an avoids doing critical damage and on sandslash it's 4x week to ice

the crit chance for surf and ice beam is the same since it depends on the pokemon's speed stat in gen 1 and neither has an increased critical hit chance. also, sandslash is only 2x weak to ice, same as it is to water. i still don't understand why ice beam would have been more effective. in fact with the reduced damage from ice beam (due to no STAB and less base damage) alakazam might very likely have lived two ice beam crits. i was also low on ice beam pp, since i forgot to use an ether before the battle (i used plenty of ice beams vs. lance) and need ice beam for exeggutor.

it's basically a living dex challenge, but the nuzlocke decides which game the pokémon come from. regular nuzlocke rules, but dupes clause applies across games. no duplicate entries allowed in the living dex, so can't use fully evolved pokémon i have caught in another game. and an additional rule where if a pokemon faints whose species is already in the living dex (e.g. bulbasaur, because i am missing ivysaur and need to elvove it) i need to restart the game. i have a full explainer on the landing page of my yt channel, if you are interested in the exact rules. hope i explained that well enough. happy to answer any specific questions.

if i can't progress, i restart from the beginning. i have to play the games in order. if i can't catch a cut user by vermilion city, then i have to restart the whole challenge. but i think with a little planning this should be avoidable. for example I know already, that I will avoid nidoran with repels in gen 2 to ensure i can combine nidoking with blastoise in leafgreen. for firered I will pick bulbasaur, so i can use cut and evolve eevee to vaporeon for surf etc. but i think this problem will only exist until gen 3, because i am allowed to catch form differences. which a lot get introduces in gen 4 and beyond. if you are interested in the exact rules. @neil5urre6l I would probably skip gen 1 and 2 and start on fire red, I would also prob still transfer them till home. I love this idea because it forces you to use different mons in nuzlockes that you might not normally use

yeah that's what it's about. collecting pokemon and never using the same final evolution twice. i think playing gen 1 and 2 makes the challenge harder... because already in gold i'm struggling to encounter unobtained pokémon. 😅 best of luck on your living dex hardcore nuzlocke adventure!

too bad. i have a suspicion that they will release gen 1 and 2 again and make it compatible with pokemon home in some way. it might be a while before they do, but i think it will coincide with pokemon bank shutting down. (all just suspicion, i have no knowledge of any plans. but they do have a history of making games available again, even if it takes a few years)

thanks, so am i! yeah hypnosis with amnesia, psychic, surf and ice beam is brutal... nice, so both our favourite pokémon were in the hall of fame at the end! hoping to continue this way and beat gen 2 by the end of the year!

devastated to lose half the team I intended to use against the elite 4. but i think the three strongest pokemon are still around. and i did beat red and blue with just four trained pokemon. and one of those usually didn't do much... so 3 should do?

​@@neil5urre6lI think hypnosis, with proper strategy, will get close to soloing lance and bruno (if those 2 are in this game) then you just need to figure out the other 2.

yeah hypnosis will be crucial! amnesia boosts special atk and def by 2 stages in gen 1 (because special is one stat)

gen 1 backsprites would make for a difficult game of Guess that Pokémon.

@@neil5urre6l different generations have different move pools. Like in gen 9 Voltorb learns it at 26, just goto Pokemon Database and scroll down and you can filter the move pools by generation and game. It's what I always use when playing pokemon

in the original ff? it seemed really easy in this pixel remaster version. i must try and get a hold of the original!

i'm recording the 3ds with a camera. 😅 i'm doing a nuzlocke in every main series game with the goal of completing the living dex in pokémon home (no duplicates across games). so i need to play the games on official hardware.
