My Strategies for Finding Rare 90's Sports Cards
1997 All Stars is a lot like 1998 Baby Boomers with their fireworks theme. Looks really great in Refractor!
Nice stuff as always my friend!
Hi i just came across your channel!!! I am from Buffalo to!! Are any of your cards for sale???
Yes some cards are
Ya really Love the 97 Griffey AS Refractor. It looks very nice in the CGC holder also. In putting together the 97 TCR Baseball set managed to collect 2 of these. This is a very tough condition set overall. Almost no 10's and 9's are tough to come by. Good pick ups.
Thanks! I got the Frank first and was impressed how nice they were. The don't make em like that anymore
Hey Jason 👋 Got some realy nice shiny eye candy there but my favorite is the 41 Playball Ott.
Dude you have to peel off the posada and it'll be so stunning to see! I have his '97 Score reserve Collection and it's got a ton of Shine also! Does he have a Finest embossed refractor for' 97?
No he does not unfortunately
You never disappoint with your 90s pickups
Bro the algo brought me, that intro was tubular. Lol subscribed all the best fellow cardboard fan
Thanks! I played it on my gretsch!
Have scams, gambling, and transaction costs subsided? Who wants to deal with this crap?
Not really, hobby is still the wild west
Yessir and card prices are still up from before the boom in a whole . I believe that a lot of people complaining about prices being down are the ones that made wrong decisions.
The fact that some cards are going up is proof that you can still buy and not catch falling knives. People are getting destroyed on modem football right now
@@cardsandcomics well modern everything lol .Thats why grading is key if you’re selling . What I PC is weird cool S$&T I like and players that don’t play no more…
Excellent analysis! I really enjoyed your video.
Thanks!
A good hobby friend of mine once told me he compares buying/investing in sports cards long-term to that of buying a house. You don't expect to make a massive profit off it, but you do expect and hope you can sell it for more than you purchased it for in X years while still enjoying it for the life of ownership.
Very interesting research. As a collector, I agree with your sentiment about being relatively positive and maybe thinking of purchasing now. The negativity you might be referring to are the flippers or the entrepreneurs and not collectors. Thank you for your video.
Yes margins are tightening and demand is slowing. End of year has historically been good for buying
Awesome analysis, thanks for sharing
Can you give some background as to why you selected the specific cards for the index?
Yes, all of the cards are either card I own, have owned or want to own in the future. I put the index together while researching values and felt it was as representative as any index out there and was weighted more to Vintage vs Modern.
Where is the Albany card show nowadays? I remember going in the mid to late 80s and they were always held at the Polish Community Center....
Same place and probably same people lol
Agree on the holding period for Blue Chip vintage. And usually the history of vintage cards they can remain stagnate for several years and then Boom just like that Thurman Munson up 26% now all of a sudden.
That 52 Willie Mays Topps PSA 6 seems like a bargain at $16K. I'm not going to buy one but long term that seems like a very reasonable price to pay for one.
I agree and with some cards like the 52 Mays and Jackie maybe over correcting a bit there may be a window of opportunity. But like I said if you don't plan on owning for at least 10 years you may not come out ahead if money is your concern.
My worst card mistake of all time was with a 52 Mays. I recognized that 52 Topps Mays was so undervalued in comparison to 52 Topps Mantle. Still is with Mantle 52 Topps around $135,000 compared to your $19K+ on Mays. But the difference was so glaring to me back in 2000, yep 2000. I purchased a BVG Mays 6.5 that looked so amazing to me for around $2800 and had it regarded with PSA. This was when Beckett first came out grading vintage so it was a risky venture. It came back regarded a PSA 7. For some reason I thought this card should have been a PSA 7.5 or even an 8. The edges and corners were so clean and sharp. I held that card for 5 or 6 years and ended up selling it close to what I paid for it. I just could not understand it not going up in value over that time. If I had held onto it would have been a $40K plus card today. It's very difficult to see that far ahead but yep if a card collector you need to visualize that.
Smart analysis and research! I love the deep dive, and generally agree with all your conclusions!
Some vintage baseball and basketball and football card's won't change prices like hank aaron , sandy koufax, willie mays, mickey mantle and roberto clemente, Tyler cobb, and vintage baseball. The day's were you could have bought hank aaron rookie psa 6 or 7 for under 7 grand is over.
I agree, but there is some fluctuation, and some sets get hot and take off even in the vintage world. Look at Josh Gibson as another example.
That hank HD is awesome. 1st one I've ever seen
I started a RUclips channel after following you for a while. Nothing big just sgc reveals, pick ups, and showing off collection. Thank you for the inspiration. Regular guys doing Regular things
Awesome, you got a subscriber. I love collector content
@@cardsandcomics TY. I'll try to keep them flowing...lol
Awesome cards, never seen the HR Derby card.
First time for me as well
Those are 🔥 pick-ups Jason. Rarely ever see that 59 HR Derby Aaron , congratulations 🎉
Really fun to focus on rarity vs grade
Where can I go to buy some sketch cards from you? Mainly the Green Goblin ones!
Contact my on ig
Bummer! PSA is unfortunately the judge/jury and executioner. Only thing you can do is pop and give them more money!
Honestly, the grade shouldn't really matter on the rare cards.
@@vintagecollector5340 Jason said he graded them to sell them, and unfortunately a 7 to an 8 does matter. He said that as well, I’d assume he did the research. But I do agree, a numbered card or something super scarce, grade shouldn’t matter to a collector very much.
@@ClementeCollector People just too brainwashed with grading to understand what true scarcity is. Grading only matters to the more plentiful cards. On those low numbered cards, there's no reason whatsoever for those grades to matter. It's just a shame people don't understand that, but it's also why I got out of cards. I still enjoy the content from time to time, but nitpicking on condition and worrying about the tiniest scratch or slight ding drives me nuts. Give me something super rare anyday where I don't have to worry with it. That's just my two-cents.
@@vintagecollector5340 Everything you say, makes perfect sense to me and I agree. Sucks you aren’t collecting anymore, but maybe again sometime in the future.
@@ClementeCollector Oh, I still collect. I just don't collect cards anymore. I got into original photos and photo slides. I enjoy the extreme rarity. Nothing quite like buying a Griffey or Bonds rookie photo slide for just fifty-dollars (or less per photo slide) and never seeing another duplicate.
Graders must be relying heavily on what the AI scanning is telling them on the elaborate foil stock. Awesome showcase in the PSA slabs.
The only thing they're relying on is people submitting their cards to them. As long as numerical grades are treasured, they'll always have a job.
Great video! yeah some shippers pack the cards so willy-nilly I have resorted to complaining about it in the "positive" feedback I leave for them on ebay! I actually had a 1997 New Pinnacle Blue AURA Artist Proof Of Mcgwire PSA 9 mailed to me in a small envelope. I got the card with the case cracked and I was so upset! It costed $70 and luckily after taking pics of it for my ebay complaint, the buyer refunded me the money and let me keep the card. I haven't touched the card since putting it all cracked inside in a tight fitting PSA labeled slab baggy. The card is incredible though, but I'm still upset!
Great card, those Aura cards are amazing, too bad Griffey doesn't have one
It’s nice to see an honest reveal not just ultramodern stuff with 99% 10s reveal like other channels
well done
I see tons of PSA 9s with very clear print lines.
“My friends and other people gave these great grades”
you have put a ridiculous dollar amount for the declared value. They won't give you the grade it deserves if they thin the card is expensive in a high grade! It will cost you more for fees and insurance but just do it to save time.
you are competent guy, why are you asking minimum wage kids to tell you what condition your card is in?
Unfortunately for reselling or trading it's the hobby but I am starting to keep more and more cards raw
I hear what you’re saying. The sad fact is that the “minimum wage kid’s” opinion holds a ton of weight / clout regarding the value of these cards to potential buyers. If you can 10x a card’s value by sending it off, wouldn’t it be silly to NOT do that?? Also, some “kids” apply the PSA standards inconsistently from their peers, making submitting (especially 90s) more of a crap shoot.
@@HighPopProfessorThe problem is relying on a numerical grade for a rare card in the first place. Who cares about grade if it's a truly rare card?
@@vintagecollector5340 A fine point. When there are lots of a given card out there (i.e. high pop wax era rookies), a high grade is a great differentiator and a way to stand out among the many copies out there. But that grade differentiator doesn’t matter so much for the super rare stuff like PMGs, Super Raves, or Crusade Reds. PSA 6 Star Rubies will still sell well. That being said, getting one of those super rare cards ALSO in a high grade still increases the value significantly.
@@HighPopProfessor Yeah, supply and demand, but it's important to remember differences between artificial scarcity and organic scarcity. In most cases, yes, higher numerical grades are still more desired on rarer cards, but that can also be chalked up to people not understanding true scarcity. To be fair, however, many of the 90s inserts are just fancy parallels to an already-existing base card within the set. This is where the difference between artificial scarcity and organic scarcity comes in at. With that being said, how truly rare are those parallels? I've personally struggled with that aspect, as well. That's like the 1998 Jordan Metal Universe PMG: the red and green varieties are just a parallel to a base card in the set. Therefore, its personally hard for me justifying the high value. Turns out, PSA hasn't been the only one manipulating the markets with artificial scarcity...it's also been the card manufacturers. While PSA is busy manipulating and pop-controlling numerical grades to market their services to the public, card manufacturers are busy manipulating their own product with parallels to help market to the public.
try seeing if 97 New Pinnacle AP has any surface scratches on Dufex side, can be hard to spot sometimes without right angle and light source
Yes, an extremely condition sensitive set. It is very common for them to get indents and wrinkles in the foil like his Thomas.
I think PSA is really tough on 90's cards in general. I've been collecting a few & finally put together the 1997 Topps Chrome Baseball Refractor set. It's a very tough condition set. I graded a bunch of the Key cards. In all I sent back like 10 of these cards I thought were undergraded back to PSA. 8 out of 10 came back higher from 8's to PSA 9. I also had one card that was initially graded a PSA 6 that I could see nothing wrong with the card. Centering was very good & the surface looked just fine. I sent it back a few months ago and it came back a PSA 9. So it went from a PSA 6 to a PSA 9. That was a first for me. All I can say is you would not except that to happen and yet it does. I think all the new graders PSA has hired over the last few years are not that familiar with 90's type cards & it is the luck of the draw getting an experienced grader to review & give you a fair shake. They need to do better.
Definately do the SGC reveal video if you cross-over. Always interesting to see how a different grader views the card, and could support your thesis on PSA being too harsh or (unlikely) confirm that they are being accurate. One issue might be that they are owned by the same company now, so wonder if they share a database on serial numbered cards....
My last time it happened almost all cards got a bump by sgc
Unfortunately...you need to crack and send to SGC. PSA cannot and should not be trusted anymore.
They are the same company now. Your trust is misplaced.
That Sanders had a big indent on the back
It wasn't there before but I can't tell if it's there or the holder. I am popping to see but this won't be the first card psa has damaged
@@cardsandcomics I’ve had a few questionable cards that came back with weird grades but hey you never know…But I’m also not grading 90s like you either
Ditto. It’s a wavy indent that goes through the color portrait of his face - like a ripple. I’ve had this happen on the reverse of ‘99 Stadium Club one of a kinds, but that’s the reason for that grade. Also, the Frank Thomas New Pinnacle Green Artist’s proof has a small dent over the “S” in Sox at the top. It looks like it could be mistaken for the etching all over the whole card, but it’s not quite parallel with the other etching immediately surrounding it. I’d probably pop out the 6s and the metal cards with the weird edges - I agree with you that these are analogous to O-pee-chee rough cuts - it’s just how they’re made. I think the 6s are actually graded fairly though, so I don’t know if I’d resubmit, or maybe just keep raw. They were quite harsh with you in this order here, and that’s tough with the high quality of cards you sent in with this order. I think the harshest grades you got back in this order were the 7s. That Reggie White 96 Certified Mirror Gold should be an 8/9. There’s some wild inconsistencies happening at PSA… I have three PSA orders of varying size that I have recently had returned (they’re at my parents’ house, so I don’t have them in hand yet) and there was a card in almost identical shape as your Reggie. My card was a 97 Bowman’s Best Greg Maddux refractor that had two fairly prominent refractor lines in it - a vertical and a horizontal. It came back a 10. Heck, I also sent in a Maddux ‘99 Finest Gold Refractor with a pretty bad corner that I expected a 7 or 8 on… but I got a 9. I’m eventually going to make videos about these grading orders of mine when I get these cards back in hand, but I feel like I just got lucky with my grader in many cases. In general, I think your disappointing grading experience, especially with 90s stuff, is more common though. I agree with your assessment that many of the new graders are not familiar with these 90s sets and their quirks, and this is largely contributing to harsh grades and inconsistent grades.
Please Submit Again
They couldn't do it right the first time, why do you think you will do it right the second time?
@@AtomicZombieAndroid sometimes it takes 2, 3, 4, & 5 times. Hoping to get different graders each time.
PSA can’t be trusted to assess a fair and accurate grade. I’m at the point where I won’t buy raw cards to grade anymore. I’d be irate.
Only thing raw to grading works for anymore is "cleaning". Once they can detect the polish there will be no more profit in grading. Probably why they are in no rush to figure it out.
Great cards! I wouldn't worry to much over psa grade on a rare card.... By the way shiny cards look way nicer in sgc slab...
Just wondering are they about the same size as a psa slab
A little smaller but close
Totally agree Leaf dropped the ball in 1991 and 1992 with boring follow up designs. The black golds are what the standard card should have looked like for this set.
Wouldn’t 1975 topps mini be first full parallel set in post-war era? Also 1991 desert shield and micro sets
None of those were inserted into packs they were seperate sets
Enjoyed your video. Your stories are the best and make me want to open vintage now.
Thanks! This box was 30 bucks so its much cheaper than a new blaster box.
Those Diamond Producers are probably my favorite 90s insert of all time. Top 5 at least.
Well done my friend 🎉
Can't be the best box ever cause there's nothing in these boxes but worthless base, worthless parallels and one worthless insert set. 😁
Best box of 1992 Leaf 2 is a low bar i agree
I've never heard of type collection before but I do a variation of this where I really appreciate collecting commons from a premier set. It a good gateway and benchmark for me to get into a set. If I like the common I use that as a guide to go after higher value cards. I paid $15 for this common, that means $25 for this semi star is a good deal. The whole registry thing doesn't appeal to me 1) I HATE slabs and 2) I don't want to feel obligated to get a card just because its on the checklist.
