HybridDune Field Site is Ready for the Storm
Over the last weeks a team of researchers, contractors, technicians and managers have worked to create the HybridDune field experiment at the Zandmotor experimental site in the Netherlands. The field setup consists of a series of 4 dune/dike barriers with different configurations. Their behavior will be tested during storm erosion. Hard elements and (soft) sediments will interact and influence the erosive behavior for us to study. The yellow frames on the beach and in the surfzone facilitate the placement of instruments to measure the water levels, flow velocities and beach/dune shapes.

Blown Sand through the Notches at Springertduinen
Просмотров 161Год назад
Sediment is blown from the beach towards the hinterland at the Springertduinen. In 2022 vegetation was removed at this location to allow sediments to be transported further landwards into the dune area. (for details and some explanatory photos see www.wshd.nl/springertduinen in Dutch). Strong shore perpendicular winds (up to 8 Beaufort) on January 15th 2023 caused a vast amount of sediment to b...
Overwash at the zandmotor during storm surge
Просмотров 2,7 тыс.2 года назад
Dune erosion has been studied at the sand motor during the past. This week the largest storm hit and made our test dune totally wash away. Spectacular waves caused overwash and the dune lake to be flooded with salt water. While I was filming this, I got caught on top of a small dune knob with water all around. I needed to wade through the water that was flooding the beach.
Nighttime dune erosion at the Sand Motor

A moderate storm hit the Sand Motor in the night of 1 to 2 December. The Realdune/Reflex team has built an artificial dune and installed sensors to measure dune erosion in the field. Lights were placed to allow for nighttime stereo video measurements of the dune erosion process due to waves.
Installing instruments on the beach at the Zandmotor

It is hard work installing instruments that measure flow velocities and water depths in the surfzone. Last week we jetted 10s of poles in the sand to mount our sensors. The pump, pumps water through the hose towards the pole. The pole gently sinks into the sand. Starting next week we anticipate storms to hit our array of sensors. Fingers crossed!
RealDune/Reflex field site at the Sand Motor is ready for use after moving sand (Drone footage)

Today the works on the preparation of our RealDune/Reflex research field site have been finished. We are about to start measurement in the scope of 2 research projects while the 'artificial dunes' at this site will erode. RealDune, will focus on studying the erosion process of the artificial dune and its development with time. Reflex, will focus on the wave transformation from deep water to the...
Controlled erosion at the Sandmotor

This week we have started to built a sand dune/dike along the edge of the sand motor for some 'controlled' erosion experiments. We anticipate that a storm hits our man made dune in the weeks to come. We are however unlucky because we encounter a storm on just the third day of the construction works when we are still moving sand. High waves and large setup cause our dune to partly erode prematur...
Strandbeest at the Sandmotor

Today I met a special visitor at the #Sandmotor. This is a #Strandbeest made by artist Theo Jansen. A wonderful creature if you ask me. I like to watch Theo's very inspiring RUclips Channel to see more Strandbeests.
Swash in slow motion

Even during my holiday I keep being curious about coastal sediment transport. I was curious how the sediments seem to be pushed op and down by the swash motion and I noticed individual sand grains escaping the water flying through the air.
A new in-situ wind tunnel to determine aeolian erodibility of beaches - Coastal Dynamics 2021

This is a recording of a conference talk I gave on July 1st of 2021 at the Coastal Dynamics 2021 conference. I am proposing a new in-situ wind tunnel concept to study aeolian sediment transport processes on beaches. This wind tunnel will be used to study erodiblity of the sediment surface in the DuneForce project.
During my thesis I some papers about the Sand Motor, and I have to say it's really cool that the naturally occurring erosive tendencies in the North Sea, caused by storm surges and the currents coming from North-West, can be used to replenish the eroded sand of other islands eastward of the Sand Motor.
howl's moving castle
It kinda looks like EREN'S founding titan
😀😀🥰👍
E pra que serve uma merda dessa?
The movement is super smooth just like it has its soul
Pensaron en mandar esos mecanismos a otros mundos ?? Son perfectos y recorren largas distancias .

WOOOOOOOOW 😲 👍
how do you do it
Очень милые)
Fascinating! And the man that builds these creatures of art is one of the greatest artists? Sculptors? Inventors? that I've ever seen.💖
Fascinating creatures of animated art and wind-powered locomotion.
Surreally cool!
Beautiful👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
So wonderful

Amazing
Mooi man. Iedereen rennen met zijn handdoek en badgerief natuurlijk.
Great video, thanks! Do you have a rough estimation about the storm surge height?
The swell was varying from 1,5 to 2,0 meters with a wave period of 13 seconds sometimes. The wind came on top of that, don't know the exact speed anymore.
Incroyable!
