Princeton IV 2024 | Round 3 | NCW
Infoslide: Unlike criminal cases where the state acts as the prosecutor on behalf of society, civil cases involve disputes between individuals, groups of individuals, or organizations (e.g., companies, governmental organizations). When a person or entity 'sues', they file a lawsuit. 'Litigation' is this act of taking legal action.
The American civil law system is one of the most expansive in the world. There are 4 lawyers and 24 lawsuits filed for every 1000 people in America, compared to 2 lawyers and 5 lawsuits for every 1000 people in Germany, and 0.3 lawyers and 1 lawsuit for every 1000 people in Japan.

Flow of the round, merged OG and CG: Prop: Counterfactual: People can still like fictional characters(seeing themselves in the characters), but they specifically realize those fictional characters are not real and they cannot form a community with that person. Framing: The rise is particularly harmful: Opp says there is more discourse, but more discourse != more discussion. 1)The rise is bad because it leads to normal people who don’t need a parasocial relationship to opt into it but are just doing it because of the bandwagon effect. These people would have formed IRL friends that are lifelong and actually caring for them but believe it’s cool to immerse themselves in celebrity cultures. There are many harms: 1)The selection of these celebrities that you choose are not ones your identity resonates with but are ones that other people in your social group also tend to go to. 2)Your IRL friends will feel excluded because you are neglecting them. 3)You are unable to bond with normal people. If you are devoted to a streamer you love, most people in your school probably don't know that particular streamer so you lose the ability to talk about a broader range of issues that connect you and others. IRL relationships are better because they are reciprocal and two way street but also the unique mechanism to reduce loneliness by actually going out with someone to a movie or chilling out with a friend at night. 4)When this is normalized, people are less likely to be introspective about their own behaviors and why it’s harming them because they see everyone around them engaging in the same thing. Argument 1: Bad financial Structure The financial incentives of streamer: 1)If you are a twitch streamer, the more you can have someone watch your stream regardless of whether or not audiences donate, is key to whether or not advertisers want to give you more contracts+the amount of partnerships+algorithm prioritizing your content in comparison to others. But also importantly, there are a lot of streamers whose income is primarily based on free money by people making demands in a live stream context, i.e. a run on donation. This structure exists because: 1)Tactics that allow people to prioritize you over any other considerations in life. These audiences tend to be young(12-21 years old). These demographics do not have modalities of other types of friendships+experiences in relationships in the first place means it’s difficult for them to suspect when a relationship is unhealthy. These can vary from extreme to subtle tactics, so even just saying “I view you as a family and I love you guys” are such powerful cognitive influences for young people to choose to stay online rather than to hang out with their IRL friends. 2)Production teams where their job is to through direct messages communicate with viewers to make them feel a friendship exists. This is yet another coercive leverage to make consumers feel closer to the creator than they really are. They frame other streamers as cringe/losers/lower social values. They abuse the fact that you are particularly close to them and frame themselves as in need of financial help. The second reason why this relationship is likely to be highly addictive is from the audiences themselves: 1)Parasocial relationships are romantic in nature, like falling in love with a beautiful celebrity. You want to sleep with them but you can’t. 2)The sheer amount of time spent learning the little things about that person as a primary way of escape mechanism traps you even more. 3)Fan communities are hyper competitive with one another. If other fans know all the details of the latest breakup tea, you are even more pressured to over-invest and feel inferior. This wrecks emptiness in people because your best friend will never love you back but only will love their fans back. This hurts meaningful relationships: 1)People have expectations for future relationships to be unidirectional. You will watch them 8 hours a day and purchase a lot from them but you don’t expect any return from them because you have been in this community for so long. This is hurtful because people will now feel like that’s a normal expectation in a relationship. They hold low expectations of their real life friends or partners because of how much they have been willing to give up on themselves as well as people who want to exploit them have a much easier pathway. 2)You will often set unrealistic high bars to people you socialize with. Because the parasocial relationship you have is so perfect and most likely you have a low emotional maturity, it makes sense to demand more from your friends and be more critical of their trivial mistakes. 3)You are not seeing the real celebrity but the good side they only show it to you. This means at some point celebrities fuck up, like pop stars sleeping with underage girls or Taylor Swift dating some racist. At that point, you will be distraught because of how emotionally dependent you are on them. 4)Terrible identity norms: People try to mold their character around the person they have a parasocial relationship with. -Frequent exposure creates subconscious associations of how normal people act. -Because you view them in such high light, you extrapolate to yourself, “I will be loved more if I look like this person.” Celebrity standards are unattainable and increase risks of body dysmorphia and eating disorders But more importantly, the celebrity identity is not the one that is most fulfilling to me. If I try to look like Taylor Swift everyday, your true identity will be repressed. Opp: Argument 1: Some form of friendship for people Atomization of society: 1)Globalization+internet 2)People cannot afford social activities like going to cafes as global inequality is going up. 3)Decreased third places where you can stay there for long without paying to meet and talk to people 4)Remote work and norm of living at home means people don’t get to meet new friends 5)Covid broke a lot of social bonds and people’s ability to make new friends 6)Capitalism divides people so people are less inclined to collaborate. All of these means that people are likely to self-select into parasocial relationships out of necessity. People who cannot form friendships in real life per all the vulnerabilities because presumably people who are middle class to rich will not do so or minimally. People need friendships: 1)Social animals 2)Discover new TV shows and hobbies by other friends, not ALONE. 3)Legitimizes people’s personhood Comparative is when people go into a spiral of loneliness and depression. This also leads to violence as loneliness breeds resentment for society This friendship is particularly important for vulnerable populations who cannot meet up in public for fear of their own safety like gay+trans people or there is simply a lack of gay people around your life. If Prop says why not alternatives like online chat room: 1)Online chat rooms like Omegle are highly stressful for people because you often need to initiate a conversation with random people who are usually the worst people channeling their anger at you. Streamers have incentives to curate a better image to appeal to audiences. 2)People have pride and usually just don’t like initiating conversations, but watching streams and celebrities are far more passive ways to consume content and far more collectivized so people don’t feel the same level of shame. Argument 2: Formation of community Given the previous framing about people struggling with contexts to meet new people and skills to do so, the rise of parasocial relationships gives a focal point to form communities. Communities are formed with connective social capital, and bonds with the same streamer usually engenders friend groups. This looks like going to a Taylor Swift concert and talking with people about how you are both swifties. Importantly, in conjunction with friend groups and the general rise and normalization of parasocial relationships, this also results in strong checks and balances against abuse.
