    it's a shame they charge so much for a blimp, but of course it's because there is demand for it at that price. Yes, it's technically better, but it still does not justify the price and by far. Thanks for sharing the idea how to QUICKLY make it DIY. (no 3d printer or special things/tools involved)

    The mesh plastic idea is gold!

  • @alaskanfrogman
    @alaskanfrogman 2 года назад

    very interesting idea but... (and it's a big one....) Why didn't you use a sharp knife like an exacto knife for cutting? Also, why didn't you use a straightedge rule for making your measurements, especially when you were cutting your notches...? Instead of "eyeballing" the notch cuts, a straightedge would have allowed for exact and more accurate measurements. Your build is good and I got a lot of excellent ideas from your work. But your blimp can still be improved to help minimize and eliminate, or attenuate more of the wind noises. The fan test was good, but the real world is so much more dynamic and unpredictable. You didn't put any kind of interfacing fabric onto your cage. Even store bought interfacing will work very well. But your best option for covering your blimp is good old fashioned Nylon Stocking fabric. Old or unused pantyhose are excellent choices for microphone blimp interfacing fabric. Nylons and pantyhose fabrics are all the same and are very stretchy. Additionally, they do an excellent job at blocking excess wind AND, the fabric is considered "Acoustically Transparent" meaning that most of the noise will reach the microphone uninterrupted. The attenuation factor is so minimal that it's not even noticeable without special equipment to measure attenuation. Your choice for the "dead-cat" is excellent. I also am very impressed with your choice for making the cage. I'm making my own blimp and dead-cat setup for my digital recorder. The plastic mesh fabric you used for the cage is one of the best idea's I've seen. The plastic mesh has very low acoustical properties and vibrates very minimally. I've seen many different ideas where wire mesh fabric is used. Any kind of metal is susceptible to noise vibration and can actually augment certain sound frequencies. But your plastic mesh fabric actually absorbs and attenuates, rather than reflects sound and noise. Your tutorial was good. Not great, not excellent, but very good nonetheless. Your presentation needs a little bit more work and some spit'n polish, but is otherwise Okay... A cheat-sheet and a script for your presentation would really help you along. And, plotting out and planning how you want to assemble the work will really save a lot of time and you'd do a lot less fumbling around. I like your choice of zipties. But I think you could do better by actually welding and joining the plastic mesh fabric with a hot glue gun. A high density hot glue would do wonders and will fuse all of the parts together, thus making it far more durable. There are SO many different ways to do this. But your ideas are fantastic ans well worth exploring a bit closer. I've used professionally made "Dead-Cat Blimps" before, so I'm well aware of how they work. I've done videography and filmmaking, including preproduction, production and postproduction work. I have a good solid understanding of what you did and why. Thank you for this nicely made tutorial video. I appreciate how you shared this invaluable information about your build. Please, stay safe, get vaccinated if you haven't already, and above all, please be well. The world needs more people like you...

So how and at which point of the dying process would the alcohol need to be applied in order to yield the most vivid results and minimize bleeding? pls lmk if u can thx

    So after you made the dye why didn’t you let the dye cool down to 180• so it wouldn’t ruin the hair??I see the experiment as a bit of your failure.The hair did take the dye even though you didn’t even leave it in as you should have.

    • @katiebairprojects2165
      @katiebairprojects2165 5 лет назад

      The dye is not effective at all at that low of a temperature. The package directions actually call for maintaining a temperature of at least 212F for 30-60 minutes.

    How do u get the color to stop bleeding??? I did crimson red on my blonde/red synthetic unit and as i was styling my hands and everything was stained!!! I feel like the color came off the wig too. What did i do wrong?

    • @katiebairprojects2165
      @katiebairprojects2165 5 лет назад

      Red is always problematic, regardless of the method or dye you use just because the pigments are so strong. All I can suggest is to keep rinsing until there is no rub-off when wiped with a damp paper towel. Depending on the type of fiber you dye, iPoly will be more or less effective. For instance, wigs and toppers made from Polyester will not accept as much color as ones made from Toyokalon.

    • @katiebairprojects2165

      I've tested this dye on numerous colors, brands, and textures by this point, and have come to the same conclusion. It just isn't ideal for dyeing synthetic fiber. It's great for synthetic fabric, which makes sense, because that is what it's designed for. But as a way to dye wigs or extensions, it misses the mark for most applications.

    Can you dry it with a blow dryer

    • @katiebairprojects2165
      @katiebairprojects2165 5 лет назад

      Yes you sure can! However, part of the reason for hanging it upside down is to allow any dye that is still mobile to settle in one spot. If you blow dry it flat, you will have residue distributed more randomly throughout your piece.

    so you're saying that alcohol makes this dye run? a.k.a. hairspray cannot be used on it?

    • @katiebairprojects2165
      @katiebairprojects2165 6 лет назад

      If you're just misting it on and letting it dry, the alcohol won't have much effect. But if you're putting it on heavily, or continuing to comb or run your fingers through with a heavy coat of wet hairspray on it, you will notice rub-off.

    • @katiebairprojects2165
      @katiebairprojects2165 6 лет назад

      Unfortunately, no. This dye requires that you are able to maintain the temperature for at least 30 minutes for it to work. However, you CAN do that with iDye Poly. I posted the method for that in a different video. ^_^

    Have you tried the alcohol ink mixed with 90% rubbing alcohol to dye wigs?

    • @katiebairprojects2165
      @katiebairprojects2165 7 лет назад

      It's actually funny that you mention that... I invented Petting Zoo Wig Dye (The original alcohol based formula) over a decade ago. The ink+alcohol mix people have been making is sort of a homebrew version, but it lacks the binder, and isopropyl alcohol is too strong, so it suffers from wear-off after time. I uploaded the Custom Coloring chapter of my book for people to download FREE from my website. Lots of good testing info! ^_^ pettingzoowigs.com/wig-dye/

      Katie Bair Projects invented it was out way before you did it you just added a name

    • @katiebairprojects2165
      @katiebairprojects2165 5 лет назад

      Sorry, you're mistaken. I originally invented the formula in 2003, and shared it on Cosplay.com, where folks immediately started trying to reverse engineer it. Previous to that, people were dyeing their wigs with diluted acrylic paint (made popular by cosplayer Tristin Citrine). I actually have a short history about it in my book, and a PDF version is available here: pettingzoowigs.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/world_of_wigcraft_by_katie_bair_Custom_Coloring_Section.pdf The cosplayer who first coined the phrase FW Ink Method is Honey Bunny Cosplay, who coincidentally, was one of my best customers. www.acparadise.com/acp/display.php?a=16207 She posted her "ink + rubbing alcohol" tutorial to cosplay.com in 2004 as a "homemade wig dye". However, she later asked the moderators to delete the post, their response was merely to lock the thread, preventing her from posting follow up information, such as rub-off and fading issues. Which is why this flawed method remains popular today. In summary, I don't get any glory out of being the one to have invented alcohol based Wig Dye. It was done out of necessity and shared out of a desire to help fellow cosplayers. Several people have since claimed to have invented it, mostly because they aren't aware that there is actually published proof that they didn't. <3

      I actually just finished up an iDye Poly video, and it will be uploaded shortly. I only used the RIT ProLine in this test because that's the product I was sent to use as part of the final round of Iron Wig. After using it more extensively, I definitely don't recommend it for synth fiber.

    Have you thought about wrapping the curly ones around a perm rod or like flexy rods to maintsin the curl while you color?

    • @katiebairprojects2165
      @katiebairprojects2165 7 лет назад

      Just like with human hair, wrapping fiber tightly around anything during the dye process with most likely produce spots.. Additionally, unlike human hair, a wig doesn't keep its "head" shape unless it's on a head. So dipping a wig in rollers into hot water allows for pretty much zero directional control with the curls. (They will literally form wherever they happen to be sitting when the plastic hits that magic cooling point.) Another reason I usually use Petting Zoo Wig Dye when dyeing pre-styled wigs.
