Splitting the Stump Cut

In this video I tackle splitting the stump cut, the lowest log on the tree. Because this log is where the stem starts to flare out to the roots, the grain can be twisted and more difficult to split.

Where can I get one of those chainsaw that sounds like a bee?
great demonstration. is the saw very heavy. also, my concern is the length of the saw. question, if I were to store the saw after usage, do you have an idea what's the shortest i can make it. Thanks and God Bless.
Thanks, 16.3 lbs. 8'10" and can fit diagonally in my 8ft truck box with tailgate shut
weight is without battery
Great for getting out of a jam, but I would do what Ford recommends asap and reroute the fuse. This will get you home or to a shop.
Put a bolt through the hole in the foward end of the blade and lock it down. Then raise and lower the engine like a paper cuter. Put a spring or bunji cord on the engine to rais the saw without effert. Build the frame with heavy duty lumber and design it to just drop the cutoffs into a trailer.
Nice job sir. I have the Husqvarna 455 Rancher the equivalent of the Stihl 290. A 55cc a great all around saw for almost anything. I prefer to limb and buck over felling any day. Happy Thanksgiving and God Bless!
That saw is dull
@@dereksteele2284 yup, I fixed that before cutting the tree up
Eastward or Westbound?
@@craigrichardson5223 Eastward, just 32 more miles to Michigan
Im stranded and im gonna try this loo
@@joggerman1234 great, let me know if it works
Thanks for taking the time to post this video!
Nice
pour some of my wife's homemade SOUP on it !!! GONE !!!
I always dig just a couple inches deeper and I could care less about spending time and work of removing bark from the stump. Chainsaw blades are not expensive anymore. I keep one blade for 'digging' in the dirt and a couple good blades for normal chainsaw use.
Thank you for the instruction.
So its hot or beautiful day?
Yes
that's astounding how many there are. the native trees and shrubs don't have a chance
Yes, quite a challenge to deal with.
Thank you, sir! The previous owner left a stump in the front yard and just put a flower bed around it. It was nice when there were flowers, but now it's just a hassle to mow around. I dug down a ways and cut it like the video. Then I cut a grid pattern and came in from the side and knocked out a bit more. Looks good now. I just need to pick up some sod to patch that spot up.
turn the truck around.lmao
Love this method! Makes it so much easier to do hard labor work
Disappointed, you didn't remove the tree stump just cut it shorter. Sine you left the roots untouched the stump can grow small branches.
Stump is cut at ground level allowing lawnmower clearance. Old pine stumps did not resprout.
Naw, I hit dirt at least once and the chain saw blade is instantly dull, now what, spend hours sharpening it? Nope. I use a pressure washer and blast the dirt around it and THEN you can use a chainsaw unless you really want to remove it and then use a reciprocating saw as its blades can easily be replaced cheap.
wrong way to take that block apart.... respectfully
?
Thank you
Some invasive trees like buckthorn will re sprout from roots. Even trees that are cut down may sprout from the stump. At least cut around the stump with a powered reciprocating saw. Try to get any tap root. You will get sinking soil as the roots rot. But planting seeds should be okay. Good luck with the flowers.
I got my puller bear late last year and love it. I am a female over 65, and have been fighting buckthorn for years. Unlike you, we have clay soil. Unless you catch it immediately after a lot of rain, even a small, less than a yard tall, buckthorn can be almost impossible to pull out. Many times on plants only a foot tall, the bark comes off but the roots stay behind. I just keep changing the angle until I start to get movement. I forget what model it was, but it has the long handle and takes trees to 2 1/2" diameter. It weighs 12.75 pounds, so it gets hauled around in the wheel barrow, and I can only do it for an hour at a time. But I have the biggest grin when i get one of the nasty trees out. I have a pile of "trophies" from my efforts. When they are dry I will burn them with great delight.
Good work!
I just started clearing land to start a small flower farm. I have quite a few really small trees.. Some i can pull out bc the ground is soft. I'm not sure if i need to pull them out or if i can cut them down. Will the roots of small trees cause problems when i plant flowers? Any advice is much appreciated! I do have a truck so im excited to at least have this option!
It will grow back.
Buy a stump grinder or rent one.
Awesome video
Much less urban than I imagined it to be. Thanks for your time videoing this segment. I'm more inclined to hike this this summer. Couldn't do it last year. The geese cracked me up, where I'm from they'll just hiss at you when you walk past them. Unless you have a dog with you.
Glad you enjoyed the video. Good luck with your hike.
Excellent mate. Thankyou After the floods in my part of Australia, I have not seen those tree pulling devices.. Excellent advice. Cheers mate.
Thanks Nicky. Am glad you found the video useful. Take care and stay on the high ground.Paul
Thanks for sharing, i have not made it to that section but now i want too :). Love the sound of leaves crunching too!
Awesome!! So cool to see you guys on the AT! 🎉😁
Nice video. Thanks for demonstrating!
I wonder why you would do this. Seems to be more work than needed. I have not had any problems burning that type of wood in my stove. Thanks for posting the video.
More for if you are selling wood or if you just like a cleaner end product.
Only way I would go back in the woods and hike, I would have to be tethered to someone else. I know what's out there
Never seen a weed puller. I'll be using these techniques at my daughter's place in N.H.
I like the bike shuttle strategy! The road walking is such a big part of the IAT... Looked pretty busy where you were crossing the Fox. Enjoyed how you kept things interesting with some descriptions of the things you were passing by 👍
Thanks for sharing your “forest bathing” hikes with us! Almost as good as being there.
I use the small chainsaw to girdle or hack squirt. Otherwise use a bigger one if cutting. I use loppers on inch or less. Never handsaw too much work. Regardless good work.
Unfortunately the sectikn locks don't hold the sections tight when sawing. They go in and out making it impossible to saw branches. Customer service is a joke, said they would send parts from China. After a couple of weeks I received a bag with some plastic parts for one lock without instructions. There are 3 or 4 locks that don't hold. Customer service was unable to assist with instructions or other parts. Total waste of time. Read and believe the bad reviews, they're accurate!
That is terrible customer service. They should have sent you a new saw immediately and you return the defective one. Should have been no more than two weeks tops to get it resolved. You have the patience of a Saint. God bless you sir.
This is great but your title says stump removal, I was expecting you to remove it not just cut to ground level.
Watching in 2023. Thanks for saving me $1000+ to cut flush 20 of Italian cypress stumps
I was wondering if there was some kind of tool for getting these small saplings. Thank you!
i wait 6 mo,,,,,then drill 30-50 one inch holes into the stump as deep as my drill extension will allow,,,at least a foot deep with an industrial wood penetrating bit, Then i pour diesel fuel into all the holes, and let it soak in and do it again. Two days later, i do it again,,,,repeat for 5 times...then i return for a final fill and as i light it off, i cover with scrap wood in tee pee style about 2 ft high and cover with a metal trash can or tin roofing,,,,making a sort of outdoor oven....let it burn through the night and into the next day and night. In that time, the fuel has pretty much soaked out into the sideways roots and the wood of the stump. When the fire goes out in a day or two and stops smoking, its usually ash a foot or more deep. Very little labor used, not a lot of diesel,,,,but it does take a week or more of preparation,,,,your choice,,,,
Saw arrived yesterday ruclips.net/user/postUgkxfQm1wmg0ItKDLavxj1nXtQY9HP7EF504 and today I cut about 3/4 cord of wood with it. Make sure you get an extension chord that is at least 12 gauge wire, minimum. This is my first electric in about 10 years, and things sure have improved. The self-sharpener works great, and it just kept cutting through some pretty decent logs. Wear your eye protection, and ear protection. Excellent saw.
I was doing this last week with the Chevy 3500.
Pro tip for pulling out stubborn trees. The chain is pulling horizontally behind your pickup but if you put a wheel+tire (spare from the pickup?) next to the base of the tree & lay the chain over it then to the truck it will pull more vertically. For clarity, position the tire touching the trunk so that together the combo resembles a letter “b”.
Easier to pull a tree horizontally then vertically. Your pulling against more root area by pulling straight up.
What about cutting into the stump with the saw, sort of like slicing a cake? Then remove small, shallow chunks at a time. Seems to me you could end up cutting below ground level on all but the very perimeter. Then you'd have a sort of "bowl" to catch and hold water, to help rot the remaining below-ground root.
You should use shear bolts on your lawnmower blade, just in case you hit a hidden stump. It will save the mower engine shaft.
