The lovely and talented Kat Moore from Super Saturated Sugar Strings joined us at the Musk Ox Farm to play this dreamy rendition of "Sugar or Salt." Her audience included the Old Ladies Herd and the Spice Girls Herd, who had a good day munching on lush grass and listening to Kat.

Acadia and Benedict are Always Making New Friends!

Our first little Egg Calf of the year, Benedict, is over 145 pounds now (July 2024) after being born at about 15 pounds on April 15th! As we watch the calves grow at rapid speed, we enjoy seeing them develop into their own unique musk ox-selves. Acadia is known around here as being very friendly with visitors. So how do you herd musk oxen? Well here you see our Herd Staff herding our Older Ladies into the barn for their weekly health checks! Our gentle husbandry techniques allow this to be accomplished with lots of patience and lots of time reading and understanding the body language of each musk ox.

🌿 Not only is browse a fun treat, but it also serves as an ox-cellent enrichment for the herd as it provides diversity in their diet and encourages them to explore their environment and forage for vegetation, which is a natural musk ox behavior. It also helps them continue to see Herd Staff, such as the awesome Laurel here, as a positive part of their life. 🌿

Thanks for the advice David! We were a little last minute in putting this together but were fortunate in having Kat come out to do this with us! We are definitely hope to set it up a little more next time we film Music with Musk Ox
He was named after Benedict Arnold?
He is from our Egg dish naming theme, so he is actually named from Eggs Benedict! And we have been just been calling him Ben, Benny, or Benjamin as a nickname :)
I got to visit this past weekend. All of the calves were very interested in the people who came to see them!

They're a lot like sheep, so if you can round up sheep, you're good to go with musk oxen, I guess?
Great question! A lot of skills and technique needed to herd sheep probably translate very well to herding musk oxen. However, musk oxen can be more stubborn than sheep and require quite a bit of patience to work with.
