Dapto is a suburb of Wollongong in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia.
In 2000 an armed offender, who was a registered security guard, fire upon police who were attending his residence in relation to a domestic dispute. Officers were pinned behind their police truck for 2.5 hours with around 60 shots being fired at them before being rescued. The officers narrowly avoided being shot and killed throughout the ordeal.
The siege started about 8.30pm and ended about 3pm on the following day with the offender surrendering to tactical police from the Illawarra SPSU and Tactical Operations Unit.
The offender later committed suicide on remand in jail whilst awaiting trial.
