NC Ports set a record in October 2020 by welcoming the largest container ship to date to call the Port of Wilmington. The Yang Ming Warranty sailed into Wilmington with a carrying capacity of 14,220 TEUs and is the largest class vessel calling on the United States East Coast.

On March 29, 2018, North Carolina Ports welcomed two new neo-Panamax cranes to the Port of Wilmington. The new cranes are part of a larger $200 million infrastructure improvement plan that will allow the Port to accommodate two ultra-Panamax vessels simultaneously on a two berth operation.
