Asher Lurie (b. 2003) is an internationally programmed composer, percussionist, and guitarist born and raised in Dallas, Texas. His orchestral work "Precisely" was recently recognized as a finalist in the Brevard Music Center Composition Competition and received third place in the Frost Composition Competition. He is a senior at the University of Miami Frost School of Music studying Music Theory and Composition with Scott Stinson and resident composers Matthias Pintscher and Chen Yi. Lurie has studied and collaborated with artists at the soundSCAPE Festival, Cortona Sessions, Brevard Music Festival, and Atlantic Music Festival. Recently, he has had the opportunity to compose works for Sandbox Percussion, arx duo, KHAOS Wind Quintet, and the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Beta Tau Chapter. Inspired by his rock and metal education and his Jewish heritage, Lurie’s music regularly explores aggression, tension, and relentlessness with warm, dreamy touches emerging from the background.
CORE (for percussion quartet) - Asher Lurie
"CORE" is designed to push the limits of the modern percussionist. The composition consists of recurring rhythmic loops and overlapping patterns, creating an uncommon feel and displacement of time. It is a product of post-minimalist development techniques combined with progressive/math rock. A vibraphone is at the center of the design, surrounded by four multi-percussion setups. Each multi-percussion setup belongs to a percussionist who shifts back and forth from their individual setup to a section of the vibraphone. The vibraphone also sits at the center of the musical composition, with a solo beginning halfway through the piece and recurring themes throughout.
