    My sister and I watched the Daytona 500 that year Dale won it. We were screaming that last lap & talking him to the finish line & we were jumping with joy when he finished 1st. We don't watch racing anymore because for us there was just one hero Dale Earnhardt. We miss you Dale no one drives like you.

    Watched part of this live in the 11th grade as I believe it aired the Thursday after the Daytona 500. I had a math class in the early afternoon and our teacher for some reason let us put this on during the 90 minute class. I sat the whole time in tears and honestly, I think I spent that entire week in tears as did a large portion of the rest of North Carolina along with me. The RCR shop in Welcome is about an hour or so from where I'm from and in 2001, NASCAR was far more popular in the south than it is today so to say the state was in mourning would be accurate. I remember to this day members of our JROTC class lowered the flag to half-mast the Monday after the race and were written up on orders of the principal for doing so as he felt there was no justification for doing so.

    Do You Have Any More NASCAR From 2001 Including The Spring Rockingham Race

  • @johngrohs8031

    To me. This started one of the worst years in the world. First you see Dale in that crash and you're beginning to think. Ohhh he will be fine. He's been in Nasty Wrecks before like the one in Talladega back in 1996. But when Mike Helton said those words it really rocked NASCAR to its core. Cause Adam Petty and Kenny Irwin's lives were lost in 2000 and you begin to think who will be next. Never thought it would be Dale. Then after Dale died. In other sports. Wrestling in WCW and ECW went out of business and were sold to WWE. And that led to the end of Monday Night Wars all together. Then 5 months later. Aaliyah dies in that plane crash and September 11, 2001 happened when New York World Trade Center & Washington D.C. Pentagon hit by those planes. I began to see 2001 as the year that we were Stuck in a Moment that We couldn't get out Of. And then 2020 was like 2001. The Pandemic. Ryan Newman almost dying in Daytona. Kobe Bryant and the Riots cause of Police Brutality. The Wildfires. And fans not going to Sports Events. Wrestlers had to wrestle in WWE & AEW in Empty Chairs. But I was so glad to get out of 2020 like I was in 2001. But 2001 felt like we were in a tidal wave cause of not only Dale, but the Wrestling World, Aaliyah and 9/11. And plus Cal Ripken retiring in baseball, But in some aspects. 2001 was still a little better despite all of that. It's just that that year was truly a wave of sadness and sorrow and so many questions. But like every year we move on and go on with life. That's what we choose to do. Move Forward and 2001 taught us that lesson that nothing lasts forever.

    The World will never know how much Dale Earnhardt was loved and was loyal to Nascar. If he had stayed alive, I would've seen him retire by 2005 and I would've loved to see him have more wins, a resurgence if you will. Cause he'd been talking about breaking Richard Petty's record at 50 years old. I think if he had not been dead, he would have done that. DEI would have won well, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Would've gotten a lot more wins, so would Michael Waltrip & Steve Park. And had Teresa not been owner if Dale was still alive. Dale Jr would've stayed in DEI instead of Hendrick Motorsports and would've gained himself a Nascar Championship. And also I'm sure that DEI would still be running in business today.

    Loved Dale. Never forgot meeting him at meet-greet Greenville-Pickens Speedway Fair; I had tried at meet-greet at Winston- Salem, NC, couldn't get near him. Now was my time. The first time was he & Jr together. There was a radio contest, whoever screamed loudest got to be on radio live and I determinedly won and I chose to pretend Dale and Jr on our local 1/2 mile track race each other, last lap, rubbing, racing. I don't have to tell you who on. I got up there and some disabled children and he looked in my eyes "Ma'm, do you mind me taking care of them, "Of course", I say. Got to see the Intimidator wheeling that black "3" on the track in Charlotte and on TV, but like most others the best was the Daytona win. Family around and I was sitting in the floor, had pneumonia, over a vaporizer, feeling horrible but happy as the laps are winding down, praying that this 20th try will bring him victory. And as he took checkers, tears flying around the room as my "Dale" finally won the "Daytona 500"."We won". "We won". Gone 20 years. Not forgotten. In Heaven with God. Many memorials, most of them with a back-up song "Simple Man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. And coming from having nothing to become a man of means but could wear a tuxedo or farm clothes... Simple Man... Miss you Dale!!!

  • @joe6096
    @joe6096 2 года назад

    Dale was THE face of NASCAR for my generation. For 30 years it was The King but once he retired in 1993 The Intimidator led the way to the 21st century. Richard Petty was the southern gentleman. A stock car legend with his roots to the beginnings of the sport. He was the everyday guy who always had time for an autograph and a chat with a fan, who was also a gentleman on the track. Dale made NASCAR cool, hip, and rock n roll. He wore slick sun glasses, could be moody and mysterious, wasn’t afraid to cuss in public, and in 1986 adapted what some would say is the coolest color scheme in the history of the sport: black with silver and white trim with red interior. And that black helmet. He mixed it up on the track, got into and caused some wrecks, but it was all with the determination of getting just a little bit of an edge. He made NASCAR better in that way, because he forced the other 41 drivers to do the same for 3 hours to try to beat him. So he advanced the sport. As the 90s came through to the 2000s you either loved or hated Dale Earnhardt. That’s why his death caused such a vacuum in the sport. Everyone at the track or watching on TV were either rooting for Earnhardt, or rooting for their guy to BEAT Earnhardt. Didn’t even matter if you won the race at times - just come in ahead of that Number 3.

      So do I. The race as well because my husband was out plowing snow. Never missed the 500, but no choice he’d miss this one. Only reason I taped it. He knew something was wrong when he walked in the house 5-6 hours later. He also didn’t believe me when I told him until the tears came again. Went and got a beer, sucked it down and went back outside to shovel our driveway. Didn’t matter that it was dark or that he’d worked 13 hrs. He didn’t want to see it just yet.
