1998 Chevy K1500 Shift Cable Adjustment
This is how you adjust your shift cable if your old Chevy truck won't go into park and your cable doesn't have the separate adjustment apparatus found on the '99 and later model trucks.

To get the white clip out clean it up with penetrating oil and put tranny in neutral allowing the tension to release

Is it the same for a 94

My shift cable kept popping out of this connection, preventing park. I think it is because the lever that goes into the tranny is really rough. I don't have any money so I wrapped wire and electrical tape around the cable and connection. I can go into park again! Hope it holds for a while. I can definitely feel the restriction in the lever.

Try hotshot additive and a corvette servo…. It’s helped plenty of these transmissions for me. Just my two cents

Just put a new shift cable in couldn't get second or first and sloppy when it went in to park.. move your shift linkage all the way back to first move the shifter lever on the column all the way to first now push your white clip in.. done.. first cable was a doorman couldn't get it to adjust right, the hard plastic body that goes in the mounting bracket is to long so you can't get it in first.. second cable was ACDelco was able to move it into first and adjustment, so I have all my gears and Park.. and that's in a 96 2500 plow truck that sees a lot of 'reverse and drive'..

Great video and thanks for posting!! Looks like the cable stretched so much, that it's beyond adjustment and your transmission column will not down to 1. My 97 GMC K1500 suburban has the same issue. Have to replace the cable if I want speeds 1&2 manually!!

My mistake was when l replace the piece I push it all the way in to the end then I push the pin in to set it and locked. No wonder it was out of ajustment. Yep. I'll have it done your way now. Thanks again.

Okay guys having trouble popping the white clip out, put your transmission in neutral first. It relieves pressure on the clip otherwise you'll break it. Secondly, to the people who can't get it in P to start it pro tip: your truck will also start in N (neutral) Okay for the actual adjustment, after popping the white clip, go from P to 1 a few times, then pop it back into P. If the LED light for P comes on, then go underneath the vehicle and pop the clip back in. Be aware, you cannot pop the clip straight in or straight out with pliers flatly. You must angle the pliers so that the white clip can penetrate through the other side. It cannot if the other jaw of your pliers is pressing against it.

Just changed my cable. This really helped. That white push up lock, has flared out ends. Pressing in and up is necessary. I did this cable adjustment prior to changing it out, but mine was stripped. I had jerked on lever a week earlier while parked on an incline. Stretched cable..its all good now. Thanks again.

I have written instructions for this procedure in a manual. I couldn't figure out what the heck they were talking about. My problem is that it's hard to shift out of park. I thought maybe a cable adjustment was needed but after watching this I can tell it's not the problem, one less thing I have to futz with. Thanks for posting this!
