How To Make a Portable Foldable Storable Workbench
how do you know how wide the tongue's need to be?
After over 4 decades as a Luthier I have a small tip ... tap tone your wood before you start, it saves a lot of time
Endless hours of fun...and a story too embarrassing to tell the ER doctor.
Are you still making 12 tongue logdrums.
Nice work
Dynetics cure you much better than Krishna. Thanks for the rocket fuel. I'm gonna blast the D and make a cool loud box. Perhaps I'll make a few of them.
Not sure if anyone else noticed, but i hear you on that pinback guitar cover you've going on. Hope your instrument making is still going well!
I'm experimenting too! I have 3 Tamböa drums and found that a combination of a sm57 and overhead ldc'(s) works like Jacques said. Dual sm57's work well too! I only have two inputs for my audio interface so I couldn't do a 3 mic set up :(. You probably already have figured out what you want to do but just thought I'd put my 2 cents in. Here are my attempts at recording. These are my first attempt so I made a couple mistakes lol ruclips.net/video/7j6Xr5bf2h0/видео.html ruclips.net/video/Y_XQYp5GVlo/видео.html
Would be interesting to see a decibel meter test to see which one truly works best.
Love the tenacious d acoustic background music
Sounds wonderful. I believe the bottom one is chorded (arranged in groups of chords)? I recently purchased a 14-note chorded and it's very different from other tongue drums I have. Watching you play it has given me some insight.
Ya, I think your final one sounded the best! Thank you for breaking it down to the simple basics. It always helps to have just the facts ma’am. And then make them beautiful!
Hey there - love this! For a homemade board your rail design is great - simple and neat. From the video it looks like the balls you have are holding you back. The movement never quite looks flowing, so the balls is playing catch-up with the weight transfer, and you are getting caught out between the two! The biggest key to a board on a ball is getting the ball right. It took me years, but once you get the right ball everything clicks and flows. There is a company that makes balls for this in the US, and I also sell them separately, so you can make your own boards and get the ride you're after :-) Do hit me up for any ideas and advice - I love seeing people DIY :-)
Woodglut has a lot of plans to choose from.
Respect
Note
Do you still have your easel file for the cnc ?
I'm definetly gonna have to try this, would putting some gym mats down help with the hard floor?
wow this is amazing. By far the most realistic dummy i've seen so far but doubt I have to skills to build this haha. I'll go for something simpler.
I Love This Channel.. This is meeee! I Kinda Wanna try. Thanks..new subbie ❤ Your play on words jokes😉 Tongue n cheek
I would use an sm58 right near drum, as close without getting in your way, to get impacts. Then also use a set of stereo condenser mics about 3ft away to get room harmonics and ambience.
I would assign all mics to different tracks so you can control the mix.
I still could not get to the calculator. I must be doing something wrong here. Are you able to send different link or direct file in excel.
Woodglut is nice for that.
I heard very good opinions about the Woodprix plans.
Woodglut comes with very useful plans with all the details you need.
I am not impressed with the sound of the cherry. Why wouldn’t you use Paduak Much nicer sound
Good video but FYI- the editing is too quick and shaky so I had to stop watching :( might happen to other viewers too
1:33 - "Because My Tongues Don't Quite Lick My End Pieces...."
Wow a hidden gem! Thank you!
Your dog is so pretty!!!!!!
You could also try wrapping the ends in cord to see what happens but nice video thanks
Great work! I'm glad that I could inspire this design. :) Looks like it works great!
Thanks I loved your design. Mine is still going strong and has come in very useful during covid restrictions. I built another one using different materials but the wooden one is still my favourite!
Hej - I wonder which exact medicine ball u used - how havy is it - how big? do you have a link where to buy the one u are using? best, Oliver
There are many similar projects in Woodglut's plans.
Was anyone able to find or use the length calculator? or did it just take u to that blog?
Try this link scratch.mit.edu/projects/222700494/
Sides and not bottom would make it much more easy to tune I'm sure. Then use the table or something else till its tuned. Thanks for the vid.
Can you please add Palisander to you calculator? That would ne awesome! Merry Christmas by the way :)
You talk about length of the tongues and the thickness. What about the width of each tongue. How do take the varying widths into the calculations?
For the width I usually keep it consistent around the base of each tongue (around 3/4 inch) but it does vary at the tip. The extra width at the tip of each tongue makes it behave like it is a longer tongue (more mass at the end of the spring). For example if the length calculator gives me 11" and I only have 7" of room for the tongue I will try to make the end wider to add extra mass. It is all just an estimate and you will still need to do extensive tuning to dial into the notes that you want.
@@ikindawannalearn9513 Thank you very much. That was very helpful. Would you be willing to share the pattern you made for the twelve tongue drum with the fairly angular/ pointed tongues? I really like the look of that one an would love to give it a try. Thanks again, Paul Stitzel
@@paulstitzel1839 Sorry Paul I don't have the plans for that one.
I would imagine that there would be some vibrations along the width of the tongue, but probably at too low an amplitude to be meaningful at least on the longer tongues. I do wonder if it might become a more significant factor on shorter tongues...
It's smart and convenient, but creepy af... def gotta lock that in the closet at night... just incase Charming decides to practice on you in the middle of the night
Make it wooden with the help of the Woodglut instructions.
Do you have files templates in dxf or svg?
I don't but come up with a design you like and then just take your time with the tuning... If you plan it out using the length calculator you should be able to reach all your desired notes after careful tuning
Have files in svg or dxf?
How would cloth (felt) covering over the different mallet tips sound?
I have felt sticks from Kosmosky. They produce more muted sounds and there is no bounce. Definitely not as good as rubber.
They all have their unique sound. Pretty cool. You can switch it up, depending on the vibe you are going for.
Any vid on how to made one?
don't glue the bottom - screw it............ PURE genius thinking that's on another level
beautiful work
Using Shure SM58 & Presonus Audio USB interface. I've been struggling with same issue lately: finding best way to record steel tongue drum. I use Audacity but have Reaper (Aud. seemed more user friendly to me). I've seen pictures of traditional rock bands recording drums and their microphones are suspended up in the air hovering above the drums. I think this angle helps capture the radiance. I still have trouble capturing that radiating rigging that the drum has live. I've found that the lighter taps & overall sound in recording just sounds pinging & dinky, it doesn't have that warm hum. When I strike the tongues with more force the recording is better but shame limited to that striking technique when recording. Wish could capture better. Let us know how goes.
thanks for sharing. I can't find many videos on balancing on a ball which looks more challenging and seems like a better core/balance workout. Making the board and rails seem pretty straightforward. I was about to cut some plywood and try standing on a basketball - both a full size and a mini one to see if it would support my 200 pounds. Do you still use it? have you improved on it? Do you have any more advice to add to the video?
Can you please tell me how the width of the tongue fits in the equation of determening the note? Your calculator gives me the lenght of the tongue but doesent mention anything about width... does that not matter?
