Todd Rundgren - Healer [SCORE EXCERPT]
Wading into lesser explored transcriptional territories. Here's the opening of Healer, from Todd Rundgren's album of the same name, released in January 1981. It's a great album of bedroom progressive synthpop with a touch of ambient soul, produced and performed entirely by TR.
Enjoy sparkling Sibelius audio output.

CARDIACS : Stoneage Dinosaurs [sax solo] [full score]

Here's some more Cardiacs: a snippet of Stoneage Dinosaurs from the Big Ship EP, released in January 1987. I wanted to notate this beautiful sax solo played by Sarah Jones (née Smith née Cutts), which led to the challenge of transcribing the string parts... I'm wondering if the strings were played or sequenced by Tim himself given the similarity in character to the string parts on 'Ocean Shipwr...

There is much to be said about Cardiacs and musical madman Tim Smith. Here's my first attempt to notate the madness. Cheesy audio directly to you from Sibelius. It might go without saying that the general gristly aesthetic of this album makes it tough to understand what's going on at times. Lots of instruments are mixed pretty narrowly in the center and the EQ is treble-heavy. This reconstructi...

A full-ish score of the guitar solo from 'Moonlighting' from The Rippingtons' 1986 debut album of the same name with cheesy Sibelius playback for fun. Original music and guitar (and most if not all of the other instruments) by Russ Freeman. What can I say, I just love this guy's melodic sensibilities. A really incredibly underrated guitarist and musician overall. Thumbnail by @Lunichord

A lovely little ditty from Burnt Weeny Sandwich [1970]. As the title hints at, there's heavy Stravinsky influence on this one. The first of two marvelous solos on "Paradise Cove" from Nocturnal Playground [1986]. Does a time signature of 2/2 make sense? At least partially I think.. How often is a time signature of 4/4 really just two larger beats subdivided? I think probably most of the time... Anyway, that's getting philosophical. A friend of mine decided to ('figure out') transcribe the Dwarf Nebula Processional theme from Weasels Ripped my Flash album. Of course all we had was vinyl so it was a tedious task playing the record, lifting the needle off over and over again. Looking back, I really don't know how we did it. The trickiest part to get for us is a theme played backwords really quickly towards the end of the piece...it was the sort of project that once started you had to finish. But we were very proud of our achievement.

    Serious question (please answer with kindness)... Why most people like me who don't know music can't enjoy this guitar track?

    • @ahazybellcord
      @ahazybellcord Год назад

      Ultimately it's a matter of taste. There are aspects of this solo that I personally love. For someone else, it's not enjoyable at all. That's just how it goes. One explanation for this phenomenon is the following, which you might not buy: Within Zappa's music there are elements that are better appreciated the more musical experience the listener has. (Analogously, the same can be said of his lyrics. The better comprehension you have of the English language and the American culture of his time, the more sense can be made of what he's trying to say.) And the same is true in any field of art. There are 'masters' operating at a very high technique level and once you start to master the subject yourself, you see the details you couldn't have come to terms with before, and you realize exactly what separates the 'masters' from their contemporaries. I believe a lot of people who are academically-minded and who like Zappa's music feel this way. I even feel this way from time to time. However, I also think that these kind of arguments are more feel-good rationalization than cold, hard fact. You find that you like something for reasons that are usually completely mysterious, and so then you find ways of explaining to yourself WHY you like it. You find interesting things to remark on and cite those as the reason it's "good". Which brings us back to "it's all a matter of taste"! As an end note, I got into Zappa when I was 11 with a listening background mostly in "classic rock" and stuff that was considered "oldies" in the late-90s/early-00s. I had taken almost two years of piano lessons at that point (very basic stuff) and had no real grasp on music theory and a pretty terrible ear for relative pitch. For whatever reason, Zappa's music "spoke" to me. It was just the kind of stuff I was dying to hear. It was listening to Zappa and other prog rock artists that lead me to a musical education, rather than the other way around. So to understand why I was drawn to this kind of music at that age with no significant musical background is an equally baffling quandary...

    • @Ctrl_Alt_Sup
      @Ctrl_Alt_Sup Год назад

      @@ahazybellcord Instinctively, but also from the way people talk about Zappa, I feel that he is a particular artist, like Miles Davis or Django Reinhardt. But I don't have a musical ear, no notions of music theory, and I don't know how to play any instrument. I appreciate Pink Floyd, Randy Crawford and Led Zeppelin, in short music accessible to the general public. But indeed, taking an interest in Zappa's texts can be a gateway to his art. Thank you for your reply ! PS: I am French and I use Google translation for this exchange...
