S. Fla. Beekeeping, Mangoes and More
США
Добавлен 26 янв 2018
I'm an apprentice bee keeper and mango grower in zone 10B. Much of the info I've researched about bee keeping doesn't translate to South Florida. Consequently, I decided to share what I'm still learning with whoever is willing to watch. An Australian Shepherd might end up in a few vids as well. Bee. L. M.

My video editing skills are terrible. Sorry for the 2nd half. Have a plan for lawn maintenance wherever you place your bee boxes.

Oxalic Acid Vapor Wand Mite Treatment
Please recommend few mango varities as per their sweetness
Why use wood over wax starter strip. And also I find the comb is very delicate when using in honey super. Or should strips only be used for brood chambers? I’ve seen some guys put fishing line to help stabilize what’s the best practice in your opinion. I love the wax starter strips because it feels like it stimulates their natural instincts more. But the type of hive I use don’t usually have frames that come with the grooves so I have to cut the groove in the topbar. Beekeeping sure can be a pain 😂 in a good way. Also am I correct that when using starter strips it’s more important to make sure the hive is sitting level laterally.
The only time I use starter strips now is in swarm traps. I've tried it with and without fishing line. The monofiloment is slightly better but the ladies still like to cross comb with or without it. I only place foundationless frames with strips in the brood box but they always come from a trapout. If I do a cutout I don't use a starter strip. Over all, I prefer to use waxed plastic foundation but they don't work as well for capturing wild bees in a nuc. Some beekeepers don't use foundaition anywhere, this vid was geared toward them. Hope my explantion makes sense. Thanks for watching and reaching out.
@@s.fla.beekeepingmangoesand1517 waxed plastic foundation because everything else just breaks? It does bring up cost per frame by quite a bit and I don’t think the hive I’m using they’re even available
@@0hlegif the plastic foundation doesn’t have a light film of wax the bees usually won’t build on it. New foundation has wax 90% of the time. I render my own wax and brush it on old foundation.
Meking butiful good forming
simple recipes are always the best
Agreed.
Anything tips on nurturing the Carrie tree in order for it to be fruitful and for fruit trees
If you already have a mango tree and it has no more fruit, August is the time to prune height out of the tree and clip the tips of as many branches as you can reach. Tipping encourages blooms after our first cold snap.
Thanks Babs.
What do you use for fertilizer?
I don't fertilize. I only use mulch.
You've got three of my favorite mangoes Carrie, ice cream and Julie
You should get drip irrigation and adjust your sprinkler not to hit the tree directly which may be causing your issues.
Thanks for the comment. The trees are well established and we have a high water table. We even flood 2-3 times a year. No irrigation is needed. I pugged the Alphonso and grafted Lemon Zest. Fingers crossed.
Can you give some tips to grow a mango tree? 😅
Do you have a favorite variety?

My loquat trees get tortured by aphids from time to time, which are physically carried up to the tree canopy, one by one, by ants. So I've found if I put a few strips of double sided tape circumferentially around near the base of the tree/trunk, it dramatically slows down, or even completely halts the ant activity. They don't want to cross the tape barrier. So a few strips of tape around the trunk typically does an adequate job. You might be able to do that around the posts that are supporting your hives. If it doesn't work, you can just remove the tape and try something else.
Great idea.
Thanks for the suggestion.
smear a product called Tanglefoot or petrolium jelly completly around the hive stand to make a barrier. worked in Davie.
What is the name of mango
There are a bunch of varieties. The one highlighted is a Glenn. All are named verbally in the vid.
what a great property.
Ageed.
Why did you cut the venus? Supposed to be good tasting and productive
I planted it cuz I wanted a late season mango but didn’t care for the taste. The fruit is huge and the tree is a vigorous grower.
@@s.fla.beekeepingmangoesand1517 thanks for the reply might want to try m4 or honeykiss then, my honekiss is one of my most productive and smallest tree on par with pickering
Thanks.
I don't care, I didn't eat it it's just sour hahahahahahaha
i love the Ugly Betty, named for the lumpy surface and the tv show was popular when UB came about. I live about 10 West of you, the powdery mildew wreaked havoc on my grove. Caution with the rotting fruit, Small Hive Beerles can live in them.(UF Bee lab)
I didn't no the history of UB or the corrolation between hive beetles and rotting fruit. Thanks for that info. If it's not one thing it's another. We used to be overrun by Sri Lanka but I hardly see them anymore. Powdery mildew wasn't an issue this this year although it has been in the past, mostly on new flowers.
i would love some of those mangoes now
Me too. We've harvested a few Carrie, Rosigold, Julie, and Ugly Betty this season. Many mangoes are early this years thanks to multiple cold snaps.
We want to buy? Help
There are so many gaps in reasoning to then jump off the deep end and advise not to grow Alphonso mangoes that is mind-boggling….Is it just your particular tree? Is it your soil? Is it particular virus that attacked the tree? Did other people behave the same problem? Did you grow it correctly? Is there an insecticide to cure the problem? What was the rainfall? Is it really Alphonso mango? Ad infinitum….Sad.
Nice mango 🥭
Thank you. The season is close.
I did that in the oven 😂 oops!
Great minds think alike.
I know it’s too late now but in south florida, Kesar makes a great replacement to Alphonso, much better performance here and a delicious fruit (Alphonso performs horribly here). But if you are really set on the Citrus flavor mangoes, Orange Sherbet is a much better performer in South Florida than its sibling Lemon Zest (who’s known for also being extremely finicky here). Unless you plan on spraying a lot of copper and sulfur, I would steer clear of the lemon zest and go with either orange sherbet (or Kesar if you still want Indian mango flavor)
Thanks for the advice. I have an OS but the best mango I’ve ever tasted was a a LZ grown in the same temp zone that I’m in. Of the ten scions, two survived. I’m aware zone 9 is better for LZ.
Bee tox 😂😂😂 I went to answer the door because my cousin called me and now I got bee tox,my lip was already plump of its own so you can imagine 😂😂😂😂😂
It only lasts a couple of days. 😩
@s.fla.beekeepingmangoesand1517 I had to call into work yesterday and let them know I won't be attending because of that situation and I showed one of the lady's in the office a Pic of it and she said it wasn't anything to laugh at but she bellowed
those last 2 looked like maha chanock and irwin
That’s possible. Especially Irwin.
On amazon I picked up these "Stainless Steel Beehive Base" ants are gone.
Thanks, I'll look for them.
amazing, thanks for the update!
You fb account sir?
I rarely get on FB
which FL city is this?
It’s in The Keys.
I am pulling my hair after seeing this video. I have wasted all of my life!!!!!
This guy lives by a higher standard than us.
unbelievable
What growing zone are you in?
10 B
Wow nice ❤
👌👌👌 New Subscriber 486🎉🎉🎉
Bro at list wright the mango name please 🙏
I wish I could figure out how to edit text into the video. I do name them all verbally. Thanks for watching.
WOW 😯 this is early for a Carrie 🥭 Where in Florida are you?
We’re in Dania.
Looks yummy😋
To be honest it wasn’t as sweet as I expected. Typically Carrie is picked in July and a few in June.
which part of south florida?
It's in the Keys, zone 11a
What's the variety...the red one
I think it's a Glenn.
Lemon Zest is a nice upgrade
Agreed. I’ve had one for years that has remained sickly. I fear LZ prefers zone 9 over 10. I also planted a 3 gallon LZ to improve my odds of success.
Great video. Had to Google "pugging a tree"!!!!!
Sorry, pugging a tree means severing the trunk below all of the branches. The tree typically responds with new growth.
Great tips! 🥭🥭
Wow that's beautiful
It’s a crowd favorite.
Can you tell me the name of this tree and the type im from south Carolina and we have trees look simalar to these called mimosa trees but these are different the flowers are super big and has the peels and long pollen stems
We call them pink shaving brush. I doubt they’ll grow that far north.
Pseudobombax Ellipticum is the Latin name.
lovely where is this located at?
South Florida
Nice!
That is awesome! How old is your Carrie? Looking to purchase a dwarf tree. I got overly excited by a name of a variety and bought one that will be vigorous and too large for my yard eventually. Plus I would like to pot some up instead of dropping them all in the ground. I am in Palm Beach County, and yes, we got rain just as soon as my young tree flowered. All those tiny mangos on your tree how amazing, thanks for sharing. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Keeping mango in a pot is worse than keeping a dog in a crate. Carrie is delicious and a fantastic producer yet delicate. If it drops before you pick it will bruise. Plant a Lemon Zest or Orange Sherbet in the ground in that order. Happy growing!!’
Ouch! Well, none of my dogs have ever like their crate and I never was much for training them to like it. But my yard is the size of a postage stamp. Just want as many as I possibly can, looking for dwarf this time around. Also the center of my yard I can use for my fruit trees my hubby wants to keep the center of our yard as grass for our son. Yes, I had heard that about hard to catch Carrie before they drop :(, I will have to try those two you suggested this coming season. Thank you!@@s.fla.beekeepingmangoesand1517
