Haven't listened to a lot of Voice play but this is easily one their tightest performances. You need to listen to more of Geoff's solo work. Also Tim Foust of Home free has some great solo work as well.

Part of being a great singer and performer is knowing what songs compliment your style. Austin has an added advantage of having a phenomenal voice and vocal range. Add in his musicality and he crushes it.

"the original version" by Take 6 - LOL! The first recording of this song was released in 1923 under the title "Give 'way Jordan" by the Fisk University Jubilee Singers. The first recording under the title "Get Away, Jordan" was by Four Novelty Aces, released in 1934. There were many, many recordings of this Gospel song before Take 6's recording - most notably by Mahalia Jackson in 1951, The Original Gospel Harmonettes in 1951, The Caravans in 1952, and Marie Knight in 1953.

there is a reason they are the face of these singing groups. Other groups like Home Free, Voiceplay, etc have been out and about a very long time but none of them were on the radar until Pentatonix showed up and brought this type of music back into the mainstream.

Quincy Jones calls Take 6 "The baddest vocal cats on the planet". This was their debut album released in 1988 with the original line-up of Claude V. McKnight III, 1st tenor (also the eldest brother of Brian McKnight) Mark Kibble, 1st tenor (2nd part) Mervyn Warren, 2nd tenor (3rd part) David Thomas, 2nd tenor (4th part) Cedric Dent, baritone Alvin Chea, bass. There has only been 2 member changes with the exit of Mervyn Warren in 1991 being replaced by Joey Kibble, Mark Kibble's younger brother and Cedric Dent's exit in 2011 (I think) being replaced by Khristian Dentley. They are the real deal!

Bass singing is Alvin Vinnie Chea. Claude McKnight sings the top note for 90% of the song in THIS version. Mark Kibble sing underneath him. Mervyn Warren sings third from the top ( except the high Whistle in the few sections he switches with Claude and hits the whistle. When he left the group Claude did the whistle note, and now today David Thomas sings the whistle), David Thomas sings fourth in THIS version. Cedric Dent is the baritone second from the bottom

But Accent’s version also has nuances and variations that can be just as appreciated as the original. I loved your analysis of this track. Indeed Take 6’s musical acumen and process is unique and holds up even now. But feel free to enjoy both versions of the song. They are both most impressive. Chance has an amazing storytelling voice! The songs he takes the lead on are usually story songs.

Tim Foust from Home Free has also posted some videos for his solo Doo Wop album where he laid ALL the tracks - bass, tenor, background vocals, sound effects - everything. They are really good and show his incredible range! Try Come Go With Me, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow/Stay, and In My Room on his RUclips channel.

It’s a great rendition of the Doobie Brothers hit. Adam was crazy good. All the drumming, scratching and other sounds were phenomenal. Loved Tim’s low notes. Good reaction Tori.😄

That high note is Adam. The Doobie Brothers used two drum sets and a ton of instruments to make this iconic song and 50 yrs later HF made it a classic again using just Adam and their own vocal talents. Not only that they took the song I grew up with to a whole new level.

Kudos to all the guys but WHOA Adam!!!!! Adam is blowing me away <whoosh> HOME FREE did a great job of modernizing this 1972 DOOBIE BROTHERS classic song.

I grew up on classic rock & am a big fan of the Doobie Brothers & had their albums. "Listen To The Music" was a big hit for them back in 1972. Love that Home Free is keeping this great music alive & introducing it to the younger generation. The guys did a really nice job of this song. Austin was great for the lead & loved the background harmonies of Rob, Chance & Tim's bass. Adam killed it on the vocal percussion again. He always comes up with some new & interesting sounds. Adam is doing the high notes as you can see in the slowed down section.
